Sci-Fi Bargains Of The Week

Steven Ellis recommends some possible Christmas bargains for you

Hello and welcome to the SFX weekly bargain hunt. Christmas is getting closer and closer and you’re running out of time to stick things on those wish lists. We’ve got a whole load of bargain suggestions for you. The way we look at it the cheaper the price of something the more people might buy for you… Or you can always just treat yourself…

First off we found a few sites doing two for £15 on Blu-rays; both Zavvi and Play currently have offers running that are worth a quick browse and HMV has a bunch of sci-fi Blu-ray titles from as little as £7.49 which is also worth checking out…

From Amazon this week we have a selection of TV boxed sets. The classic oddity Twin Peaks can be yours in a Definitive Gold Box DVD Edition for £24.97 . Reece Sheersmith and Steve Pemberton’s dark, twisted comedy Psychoville Series 1 and 2 is available on DVD for £14.99 .

More classic TV with V The Complete Collection DVD . Relive the original mini-series, the Final Battle and the less excellent TV series, all for just £14.97 .

We found a couple of early noughties TV shows in the form of The 4400 Complete Collection for £26.47 and Roswell Seasons 1 to 3 for £17.99 .

Gerry Anderson’s live-action ’70s UFO Volumes 1 to 4 Collector’s Edition can be yours for £16.97 or for a more modern take on Mr Anderson’s creations why not check out the CGI cartoon remake of Captain Scarlet ? Amazon has the complete series 1 and 2 box set for £18.26 on DVD.

On the film front we have Guillermo Del Toro’s dark fairy tale Pan’s Labyrinth for £2.89 and classic teen vampire movie The Lost Boys is just £3.39 on DVD. Or how about Snake Plissken in Escape from New York ? HMV has the film on Blu-ray for £5.29 . And if you feel like misbehaving you could try the Firefly movie Serenity , available from Amazon on Blu-ray for just £7.99 .

If the new CGI apes aren’t your taste then you could go for the original rubber masks in this brilliant boxed set. The Planet of the Apes 5 Movie Set Blu-ray for £13.95 from Zavvi. That’s all the Apes films in one box; Planet Of , Beneath The , Escape From , Conquest Of and Battle For all for under £15 . Even monkeys wouldn’t chuck poo at that!

On our weekly stroll round the supermarkets we found a few new releases at bargain prices in Adsa. Firstly those damn CGI apes are rising in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes , JJ Abrams gets all Spielbergy with Super 8 , the new Conan and Harry Potter and the very long title were all £10 each. Other films on DVD we spotted were The Dark Knight for £5 , Hanna for £7 and The Goonies for £5 . In the Blu-ray aisle we found Tekken for £5 and Limitless and Insidious for £9 each.

Across the road in Tesco they had a big selection of new releases on Triple Play (that’s Blu-ray, DVD and a digital copy for the unenlightened) at great prices; Captain America , Transformers 3 and Super 8 were all £16 each with Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes a pound cheaper at £15 . Tesco also had a Blu-ray boxed set of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy extended versions for £40 and The Dark Knight for £10 .

We also spotted Priest for £7 on DVD and £11 on Blu-ray; Avatar for £7 on DVD and £12 on Blu-ray; Battle LA for £7 on DVD and £10 on Blu-ray; the Clash Of The Titans remake for £5 on DVD and Scott Pilgrim for £7 , again on DVD. And if you fancy a preview of what’s in store for us all next year according to Roland Emmerich, you can grab 2012 on DVD for just £5 .

From the forum this week roddersj04 found Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : 25th Anniversary Special Edition for £9.99 , Buffy The Vampire Slayer : Season 8 Motion Comic for £9.99 , the Back To The Future trilogy for £8.69 and Doctor Who : The Key To Time The Complete Adventure Box Set for £22.99 from Play.

Radical also found a three film set of Solaris, Minority Report and Planet Of The Apes for £5.00 from Amazon, The Matrix Trilogy for £5.95 from Base, and this Resident Evil Boxed set including all four films for just £8.99 .

Our first random suggestion of the week this week again comes from the Forum’s Count Libido . He suggests Jeff Wayne’s Musical: The War Of The Worlds – 30th Anniversary Edition . The live DVD of this excellent musical Martian invasion can be yours for a bargain £4.99 . Oola! Every geek should own this.

If you’re feeling like a festive geek why not try this Snowy Dalek T-shirt for £16.68 from Red Bubble.

And finally for this week, how about these cool little lightsaber replica Star Wars Chopsticks , at £10.99 a set. They’re available from Firebox in Darth Vader and Darth Maul red or Luke Skywalker blue. Other sites have Yoda, Count Dooku and Obi Wan versions, but prices vary.

If you find anything we’ve brought you this week cheaper somewhere else please mention it in the comments section below. We want as many bargains ideas for our readers as we can get. And remember; if anyone out there spots a sci-fi bargain they want to share then please pop over to the forum and mention it in the relevant thread. This thread is for bargain films and this one is for TV bargains . Keep your eyes peeled for great offers for your fellow geek and maybe your find will be in the bargain list next time (which will be the first Friday in January).
