Salute review

The olympic story of Mexico 1968.

It's one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century: Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving a Black power salute at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

It’s the third man on the podium, Aussie Peter Norman, who’s the focus of this conventional yet moving doc, directed by the late Norman’s nephew, Matt.

Salute contextualises this act of defiant solidarity, exploring how, just days before the games began, hundreds of student protestors had been massacred by authorities at nearby Tlatelolco.

On the eve of London 2012, this is a valuable reminder of how athletes can take a courageous stand.
