Rumor: God of War 4 coming in 2012

The newest issue of the UK game magazine PSM3 reports that God of War 4 is in development and slated for release in 2012. “PSM3 has heard from another source that God of War 4 is coming, and will hit in September 2012,” reports the mag.

While the story of Kratos seemingly ended in God of War 3, Sony Santa Monica, the studio that made all three of the previous console GoW games, has stated in the past that the series will continue.

So what kind of game will God of War 4 be? Sony's been quiet for the past year, but they've dropped a few hints. Online play was suggested at by a job ad on Gamasutra for Sony Santa Monica seeking a senior online programmer. Despite the fact that the ad mentioned the God of War series though, it's still possible that GoW 4 may be single-player only. In March of last year, a SCEA rep told MTV that the studio was working on two seperate projects. It's possible one is an online game and the other a GoW title. In April GoW 3 director Stig Asmussen told GamePro, “If I were to bring Kratos back, I know exactly how I would want to do it. But I can't tell you. I know exactly how I would do it, and it's not anything you'd expect, guaranteed.”

With these details in mind the PSM3 rumor seems to be on solid ground, but the details of the next game are still unknown.

Interesting... is this just another way to make money? Or would it help with the canon or fan appeal? Very interesting indeed...

"I know exactly how I would do it, and it's not anything you'd expect, guaranteed.” Karts of war, anyone?

As long as the story is not butchered. I thought that it ended pretty well.

since like all the gods are killed, wouldnt that mean the world would be in chaos? with only the god of war wouldnt all of everybody worship the last remaining god and just be at war? and im assuming that kratos didnt die for good cuz god of war without kratos is like super mario without the mario

Just gimme more epic boss battles in stunning HD like in GOW3 and I'll be happy. Who cares if Kratos really died for good at the end? Bring him back!

I like the idea of the second game designer when he was working on GoW: Make Kratos fight the other mythological gods like Thor or something like that.

They could introduce a new protagonist?

I love GoW, but I really think they told a good story with the trilogy (& PSP games, I suppose) and should let it rest. Also, I can't imagine them making a game with so much oomph as GoW3. I guess I'll just hope Sony Santa Monica proves me wrong. They are quite good at what they do.

I forgot to add, "Partiness is next to Godliness."

Maybe we can finally see Kratos throw down with his brother, Deimos? One can only wish for such a thing.

I hope they have a level/chapter where you play as Zeus in the war with the Titans! It could be the tutorial level where you're always jacked then go back to normal when the real game starts. Either way, more mythological characters. (I don't recall seeing the Minotaur in the Labrynth. or fight some huge monster like Typhon!)

Maybe Kratos becomes the diety of the new world and is tasked with righting the wrongs he committed in GoW3!

I want to believe. I want to believe!

As it turns out, Zeus's father was behind it after all => GOW4

I think it'd be interesting to see a series reboot or new God of War series. Instead of ancient Greece and Kratos, how about a new protagonist fighting new gods (like how Pocotron was talking about Norse gods). I understand having a God of War without Kratos could turn out horribly, but I'd respect whoever gave it a try.

How is anyone surprised by this? God of War 3 practically ended with a big "Watch for more Kratos in God of War 4, COMING SOON!" That said, I am pumped.

didn't Kratos sorta-kinda be revealed to be sorta-kinda alive in the very very end of GOW3, like after the credits and all that?
