Ricky Gervais takes Early Retirement for Warner Brothers

Ricky Gervais is giving it all up. Tired of the comedy rat race, he’s ditching his career and settling down.

Okay, perhaps not. While he could probably retire on the sweet money he gets for gigs and the revenue that the US version of The Office has brought in, he’s not done quite yet. Gervais has signed on to a comedy called Early Retirement.

Penned by Mark Perez, it’ll follow what happens when a workaholic leaves his job to spend more time with his family – the point at which your average life-lesson comedy ends. "It was fun to get to do the opposite of most family comedies," Perez babbled to Variety, "because I've written my share of those." Well, just write this one better, Mark.

There’s no director or other cast yet, and the movie will have to wait until Ricky’s finished filming David Koepp’s Ghost Town.
