Red Dog

Adapted from a short story by Louis de Bernières, this family-friendly flick feels like a stab at an Antipodean Lassie .

The titular canine is a resourceful, russet-coloured sheep dog, who becomes a local hero in the remote ’70s Western Australian mining community of Dampier, not least for his hitchhiking exploits and his confrontations with Red Cat.

There’s handsome widescreen photography of the sweeping Outback landscapes and a robust performance from the intrepid lead, but the human characters are rather sketchily drawn and the storytelling follows a blandly ‘uplifting’ path.
