Punch-Out!! – exclusive boxer reveals!

After beating the game once, you’ll unlock Title Defense, a significantly harder mode that pits you against the same boxers with all-new attacks, patterns and tells. Sounds kind of lame, but the boxers behave so differently it’s essentially a whole new roster. We’re Punch-Out!! vets and can safely say… this is hard.

Glass Joe – Title Defense

Glass Joe was the first boxer in the NES game and continues that dubious honor in the Wii version. The second time around he sports cushioned headgear and some new fake-out punches that, dare we say it, actually make him tough.

Above: Joe’s pissed, and this time you can’t hit him in the head

Above: Well, you can hit him, but you’ll have to figure out how

Above: Prepare to get beat up… by Glass freaking Joe

King Hippo – Title Defense

One of the most famous boxers in all of gamedom, King Hippo (of Hippo Island) finally figured out that his bandaged stomach was a very telling weakness. What’s the best way to cover up your aching tum-tum? A manhole lid!

Above: Wha…how do? How hurt King Hippo when tum’s covered?

Above: Expect a whole lotta this while trying to take him down

Above: Proof that there IS a way. Figure it out yourself!

Sadly, that’s all we have for today. Punch-Out!! will make its triumphant return on May 19 in the US, May 22 in the UK. Look for our review then.

Which version of Mario is the best version of Mario?
If you could only play as one Mario forever, which would it be?

I hope they bring Mario back as the ref, or make him a hidden opponent!!! How bitchin would that be, Little Mac vs Super Mario (he would have to be Super Mario so he's big enough, Mario is so teeny). Boxing is about the only sport that Mario hasn't had a game based around.

@ Ramijiman: I'm pretty sure I saw another video somewhere else that showed a person playing in the "traditional" way.
  • Geminiman82 - May 6, 2009 2:56 p.m.

Thank you Brett-Bot! I was hoping to find out who else was going to be in this game. Us old school NES gen need to know who we can expect!
  • Moschetto - May 6, 2009 12:40 p.m.

"yet potentially carries more fond memories and nostalgia than any other Nintendo franchise." Except, y'know, MARIO.
  • twishart - May 5, 2009 11:46 p.m.

Yes, but does it encourage you to 'Join the Nintendo Fun Club today, Mac!'. I CERTAINLY HOPE SO.
  • captfuzzo - May 5, 2009 10:32 p.m.

yay first page......................Yay new punch out. hopefully mario is still referee
  • Armyofnone - May 5, 2009 7:51 p.m.

I never played the NES version except on emulators, and I don't own a Wii (Not something I lose a lot of sleep over, to be honest), so I'll have to wait til' a friend buys it to play it. Looks pretty decent though.
  • NipplesTheSuperHippo - May 5, 2009 7:46 p.m.

Glass Joe For the Lose! But seriously, I love that guy. Da king hippo is back, maybe I can be his hoe?!?! -_-
  • cloud617 - May 8, 2009 3:10 p.m.

man I can to this to come out.I cant wait to get my hands on king hippo and knock that crown off his head.
  • Skykid - May 7, 2009 9:14 p.m.

  • Ramijiman - May 6, 2009 5:42 p.m.

It looks great!! the only thing that worry me is the controls can't you just play with the wii remote sideways like a NES ?
  • Ensoul - May 6, 2009 4:37 a.m.

What kinda cheap shot was that? P. H"o"ndo bows and the player nails him with a left jab? For shame. Looks like a fun game, but it must be demoralizing to have Glass Joe knock a player down; especially with that background music.
  • thelordmeatball - May 6, 2009 12:09 a.m.

To kind of gave away the competitors name in the name of the list there didnt you?
  • Unoriginal - May 5, 2009 11:01 p.m.

Funny how I just watched a top ten Screwattack list on an competitor's website who shall remain nameless called the Top Ten Pussie Ass Bitches. #2 was whoever lost to Glass Joe.
  • Romination - May 5, 2009 10:35 p.m.

the freaking manhole lid made me laugh. that king hippo... i think i might have played this game, but i'm really not completely sure (obviously being the original). but if i just believe... then i know my dreams will come true!
  • Cyberninja - May 5, 2009 7:33 p.m.

  • Jacob816 - May 5, 2009 7:22 p.m.
