Fun trivia: “jikan” is the Japanese word for “time” (don’t say GamesRadar never taught you anything!). Time is also the primary gameplay component of Jikandia: The Timeless Land -almost everything you’ll be doing in this unusual 2D action game revolves around a timer of some sort...
The original Prinny was a bit of an anomaly: a hardcore 2D action tribute to the classic Ghouls n’ Ghosts series from a developer better known for grind-happy strategy games, set in the weird and wacky universe of one of said strategy games (Disgaea). Like its inspiration, Prinny was screamingly difficult - though certainly not unfair – and reactions were split between the game being a brilliant homage to bygone classics or a game so obsessed with emulating the heavy difficulty and imprecise controls of the past that it became unenjoyable. Prinny 2 looks to satisfy the latter camp a bit more while still appealing to the former – and for the most part, it succeeds...
If most videogame remakes are dinosaurs trying desperately to find their place in a world that's long since passed them by, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling together is what would happen if a dinosaur cleaned up, got his act together, and managed to work his way up to a steady job in middle management. No, actually, it's more than that. Tactics Ogre – in some incredibly smart ways – speeds right past its modern contemporaries. Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, et al, take note, because this is how it's done...
Some gamers might have heard of a franchise that has exploded across Japan know as Monster Hunter Portable, a game with popularity that rivals the monolithic Pokemon and is most likely to blame for the PSP being Japan's best-selling console of 2010. Lord of Arcana is not Monster Hunter. Though, it does try to be Monster Hunter – a lot. From the layout of the HUD to the fundamental mechanics behind missions and battle, Lord of Arcana attempts to be as close of a clone to Monster Hunter as possible. Unfortunately, Monster Hunter’s lightning-in-a-bottle has not been successfully emulated in this bland, laborious game...
On paper, NeoGeo Heroes Ultimate Shooting sounds like a great formula. Take SNK Playmore’s massive stable of arcade game characters and plop them into an old-school styled vertical scrolling shooter, then add a bunch of SNK-themed bosses and a story composed almost entirely of silly gags and in-jokes. Sounds like a real winner for SNK’s longtime fan crowd, right? Unfortunately, NeoGeo Heroes isn’t as awesome as the premise might lead you to believe...
If you've played a Worms game in the last 15 years, then you've played Worms: Battle Islands. Battle Islands offers a few incremental updates to the classic Worms formula, but the core experience remains unchanged. You still have a team of Worms that you take into battle on destructible terrain. You still take turns blasting each other with ridiculous and cartoonish weapons, and the worms still spit out high-pitched quips; some of which are funny, some of which are duds (like the worms that sound like a tiny George W Bush)...
Before you get your hopes up, you should know that this is not a tactical shooter based on the motion picture classic Predator. If it were, it might have been more enjoyable, and it’s really a shame that Ubisoft hasn’t done some sort of licensing magic to make that happen...
Simplicity is something rarely celebrated in videogames, but Ys: The Oath in Felghana is refreshingly straightforward – ironic, considering it’s a port of a remake of a 20 year old game. In the wake of Final Fantasy XIII’s absurd, 20-hours-long tutorial, jumping into a JRPG and just beating the snot out of everything is a nice change of pace. That this PSP port is just plain great works to its benefit, too...
Grab on to your dragon balls, it’s about time for another installment in the DBZ franchise. Developed by Namco Bandai, Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team lets fans experience a proper game adaptation of the popular Japanese animated series. The game hosts a wide range of features including 2 vs 2 combat, ad-hoc multiplayer, and a campaign covering the entire original Dragon Ball Z story...
