Power Stone was one of a kind when it was released on the Dreamcast, offering arcade-quality 3D fighting without the trip to the arcade. As with the bulk of fighting games, it suffered from a weak single player experience, but never failed to satisfy when friends were around.
Capcom, in its apparent pursuit to resurrect every classic game ever made, has brought Power Stone and Power Stone 2 to the small screen in the Power Stone Collection. The games have been ported to the PSP with a few updates, but nothing that really affects the core gameplay, which is a good thing.
Unfortunately, Capcom failed to utilize certain features of the PSP that may have helped overcome the limitations of portable systems. The result: Power Stone Collection offers just a taste of the savory feast that once graced the ill-fated Dreamcast.
Power Stone 2 is basically a souped-up version of Power Stone, allowing four players to battle at once, and introducing more dynamic environments, more weapons, an adventure mode (the term “adventure” being used loosely), and a few other treats. The basic premise of both games is the same – be the last one standing in a free-for-all battle, using anything in the environment (swords, guns, crates, pots, poles, tanks) to your advantage. The controls are simple: one button performs your attacks and combos, while the others are used to jump, pick up weapons and objects, and kick or throw objects.
