Sony has released a statement today announcing that the upcoming PlayStation Portable game Patapon 2 will be a download only title. You will be able to purchase the title through the PlayStation Network or you can go to a store and buy a download code, similar to the GTA IV expansion pack The Lost and Damned.
Ars: "Our inside source has given us word that Sony will release its upcoming title Patapon 2 purely through digital means, even though empty cases with the download code will be available at retailers. Sony may be inching even closer to a purely digital business model, but retailers will surely want to fight the future. Is this the first shot in the digital war? Ars investigates."
The Patapon 2 Mini-Game, developed by Kerb to promote the launch of Patapon 2, allows you to try your hand at banging out beats to command your tiny tribesman with the rhythm of your drum.
PS Blog: On May 5th, for the pocket-friendly price of $19.99, you'll be able to own your very own personal copy of Patapon 2. No longer will you drool over the promo videos and exclusive IGN previews.
Chris Hinojosa-Miranda // Associate Producer, SCEA writes:
Looks like Sony's continuing the trend of offering playable demos as incentives for pre-ordering its games. The company has done it for Resistance Retribution on PSP and Killzone 2 on PS3, and next up is Patapon 2.
According to a Sony Europe PSN release schedule obtained by videogaming247.com, Patapon 2 will be available for download for PSP from the European PlayStation network on February 19.
The loveable Patapon are getting 100% more huggable thanks to Medicom Toy, the company that makes Kubrick collectibles. Sometime later this month Rolito's creation is going to be sold as a plush doll in Japan for 3,990 yen ($42) each. At that price the stuffed Patapon isn't really a stocking stuffer since you can purchase Patapon or digitally import Patapon 2 for less.
Threespeech: "Wondering how to fill up a cold November? Not any more - you've got gaming to do! There's a glut of great first party games coming out on PS3, PS2 and PSP over the next month. We've got the release schedule right here - and the first game is out today…"
How big is Patapon 2? Well, take the original game ... and then multiply it by two. The upcoming PSP-exclusive sequel will feature a staggering amount of content which makes the original seem rather diminutive. While the first featured 37 levels, Patapon 2 Don Chaka will feature over 80. There were 187 weapons and items in the original -- and over 500 in the new game. Not only that, Patapon 2 will also feature a new multiplayer mode.
