Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops - hands-on

We pepper the developers with lead in the stealthy multiplayer mode

As E3 was winding down on Friday, GamesRadar got a chance to try out Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops in a special closed-door session. While we arrived too late to play the game against series creator Hideo Kojima, we did get a chance to run through a couple rounds of the game's multiplayer deathmatch mode. It wasn't the epic team-based action we were shown in the trailer, but it did give us a taste of things to come.
We've already covered the basics in our first look, so we'll cut straight to the meat of the game: in multiplayer mode, at least, Portable Ops looks and plays almost exactly like the Metal Gear Online game included with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The 3D graphics look sharp and animate smoothly, and while the camera is fully controllable with the d-pad, it followed us around pretty effectively on its own. Aiming a pistol or M-16 at our opponents was as simple as holding down a shoulder button to lock on, although first-person aiming was possible as well. Switching between weapons was easy, too, thanks to a quick, four-way pop-up menu.
