Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean

First look at Legend of Heroes III

Cute new pets and a couple of resonance stones spiff up this customary RPG

Aside from tweaking the combat system, we saw some major changes in the pet system for Legend III.  Instead of traveling back to town to refill on pet food for Skippy, now, anyone of three pets will simply eat your old equipment.  With a much stronger digestive system, a pet can eat an old suit of outdated armor or unused elixir, and, in exchange, produce anything from a party buff at the beginning of combat to a change of theme music.

The new in-depth pet system seemed to be the biggest change in Legend of Heroes III, which means that the game isn’t changing much.  In fact, if veterans of the series want to use their old characters there will be tuning forks located throughout the world that will allow you to import characters from Legend of Heroes I and II, access special quests and areas, and find unique items.

Keeping so much the same in a traditional RPG doesn’t have us worried (as much as the mediocre reviews of I and II ).  Legend III seems to be adhering to a time-tested formula for RPGs, so what will really make or break the game is the story and balance of gameplay.  We'll wait to get our own copy of the game to tell you about that.
