Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean

First look at Legend of Heroes III

Cute new pets and a couple of resonance stones spiff up this customary RPG

In addition to special abilities and magical attacks, the characters have a regular attack, a use item option, and super-powerful finishing moves - nothing revolutionary for a console RPG (which isn’t surprising for a series known for its orthodoxy).  However, we were promised enough characters and abilities to keep combat intersting for the player.

In battle, deploying attacks at the right time is crucial in Legend III.  If two characters target the same enemy with their magic, their attacks can be combined for an even more devastating effect.  For example, shadow magic + fire magic = shadowfire! (ghasp).

The finishing moves, which also rely on timing, can interrupt an enemies attack, but before using one a character must charge up through battle.  Once the charge is ready, the attack can be saved until the crucial moment when the 200-foot cow with the laser-shooting udder lines you up for the shot.  We didn’t really see any big cows, but, with the right timing, just about any monster could be held at a standstill with a steady sequence of finishing moves.
