The next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto saga hits stores at the end of October, and we've finally had a chance to take it for a test drive. We've already covered a good chunk of what to expect from the '80s-themed GTA: Vice City Stories in our first-look preview, but this was our first time actually playing the game, and it's got us hungry for more.
Taking on the role of Victor Vance (brother of Vice City partner-in-crime Lance Vance), we played through three missions, beginning with "Unfriendly Competition." Here, we met the Mendez brothers, a pair of coke barons who'll apparently play a major role in the story. A rival dealer was trying to horn in on the Mendezes' business, and so Vic was tasked with taking him down.
Naturally, this meant driving halfway across the city to the guy's beach house. Getting behind the wheel in VCS feels a lot like driving in Liberty City Stories - clumsy (thanks to the analog nub) and a little floaty, but something you can get used to with practice. Even so, we still smashed into nearly everything and had to jack a couple of fresh rides to make it the rest of the way.
On the plus side, we got to see a lot of Vice City this way, and everything from the soft neon lighting to the buildings themselves were instantly recognizable. So was the music coming in over the radio stations - unlike Liberty City Stories, VCS will feature the same caliber of licensed '80s music that helped make Vice City so memorable.
