Develop Writes: Developer 'tired of PC engines shoe-horned into consoles'.

Californian developer Ready At Dawn has attacked the current state of console game engines for being too PC-centric and scattered with middleware components.

The God of War: Chains of Olympus developer made criticisms as it announced its own newly-available alternative, the Ready At Dawn Engine.
"We are building something for developers who are tired of the challenges of PC engines shoe-horned into consoles, or trying to stitch together layers upon layers of middleware from multiple vendors," said company president Didier Malenfant, though without naming names.

"Our solution will be a complete game development platform that simply works," he said.

The Ready At Dawn Engine is said to be a wholly console-centric platform, integrated with a suite of third-party tools that require no additional licence. These tools include 3D content editing, audio, user interface and asset management systems.

"This week might just be the largest update the PS Store has ever had. Most of the content will be geared toward the PSP, to ready for the launch of the PSPgo. However the PS3 is still getting plenty of content, namely a few demos and a few downloadable games. Also don't forget to to download the Uncharted 2 demo, which is available in the PS Store now."

According to Production Weekly: "Over at Universal it looks like Brett Ratner has shelved 'God Of War,' and is moving forward on 'Trump Heist' with Eddie Murphy and Chris Tucker."

411mania gives a rundown on this week's game releases. Highlights include The Chase: Felix Meets Felicity, DJ Max Fever, and Ninja Blade.

The Chase: Felix Meets Felicity
"Despite still being in pre-alpha, the glimpse that I got of The Chase at last year's E3 was already looking pretty good. Unfortunately, more high-profile 2D platformers like Mega Man 9, Bionic Commando, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia were getting most of the attention. So, it's understandable that this game was overlooked."

DJ Max Fever
"What's surprising is that PM Studios decided not to follow in Konami's footsteps by bastardizing the series with crappy songs from 2nd-tier US bands that nobody has ever heard of. Granted, most of the people who pick this up will not have heard of any of its songs either, but one of the game's main strengths is its song selection, and changing what works would kill the series before it has a chance to plant its feet."

Ninja Blade
"Ninja Blade is a 'Cinematic Action' game developed by the people who brought us the Otogi series"
"It looks to be a cross between Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, Heavenly Sword, God of War, and Onimusha."

In another landslide victory, Gamezine's top PSP game of 2008 won your hearts with its brutal action and classic hack and slash gameplay.

God of War: Chains of Olympus won with 48% of the votes, setting the series up nicely for its PlayStation 3 release. And if it can be as perfect and engaging as God of War on the PSP, then Kratos will soon have success on next-gen hardware too.

Second place goes to Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which was awarded 24% of your votes, leading out the charming Patapon at 9%.

Joystiq writes: "We always think it's so bizarre when fanboys and girls start filling up our tips box with vitriol about the latest unpopular decision made by Sega, Square, Microsoft or practically anyone involved in the gaming industry. "Where do they get all that hate?" we wonder aloud, before going to donate more hugs down at the clinic. They would be a complete mystery to us were it not for Brett Ratner, who, according to a passing mention in a recent press release from MGM, has been tapped to direct the God of War film.

See, we hate Brett Ratner. Well, no, we don't hate the person. We're sure he's a perfectly nice man. But we hate everything he's ever put on film from Money Talks to X3 aka Brett Ratner's First-Person Theatrical Abortion. ... You know what? Forget what we said, we do hate Brett Ratner as a person. And if he directs God of War, it'll be awful, because all of his movies are awful and we don't know why he keeps being allowed to make them. The end."
To help get the game into the minds of PSP gamers -- and peel them away from Monster Hunter -- a special event was held last Friday in Tokyo. There were 15 booths where people could try out the game, tons of free swag such as keychains and t-shirts, and specially crafted drinks made from goat blood, harpy milk, and cyclops sweat were served. Japanese hip-hop group YOU THE ROCK? was also around to keep things lively. See photos of the event here."

Kombo Reports: "Ready at Dawn has been the prime developer for the PSP since their first title Daxter. Soon after they hit a homerun with a portable version of the hit PS2 console platformer, Ready at Dawn moved on and developed the recently released and major hit God of War: Chains of Olympus. Well, we are about to bid farewell to one of the greatest handheld developers of the modern era. Today, Ready at Dawn revealed that they have finished the Japanese version of God of War and thus ending their PSP development for good. They have sent back their devkits to Sony and look forward to the future, where they are certain to shine bright.

"With Chains of Olympus going Gold in Japan (????!!????!), we're now officially done with PSP development.

So today we sent all our devkits back and seeing all these boxes ready to be picked up definitely marks the end of an era here at Ready At Dawn.

What is a great epic, and how is one born? Nathan Phail-Liff, 3D artist at Ready at Dawn Studios (Daxter), was at the 2008 Game Developers' conference to discuss his studio's challenges and solutions in bringing a hit franchise to the PSP, in the context of their recent work on God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Describing his studio's philosophy concerning the many problems that occur during development, Phail-Liff said that "the difference between a AAA great game and a good one... is being very self-critical and how you react to those mistakes."
(You can view the full screenshot at Game|Life.) You can add on roughly another half an hour to this, as Chris played the first half of the game on a preview disc and then had to start again on the review code.

But even then, Chains of Olympus is still really short at just under five hours. Chris would be a little more forgiving of this if the game was jam-packed full of holy-shit moments like previous God of War games, but it just isn't.

The final piece of big news coming out of DPS is another much-requested release date: SCEA will introduce the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for the first time in North America in April 2008 for $54.95 (MSRP). Compatible with more than 100 PS3 games, DUALSHOCK 3 has both rumble and motion-sending SIXAXIS technologies. So now you'll be able to play Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and, yes, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with rumble turned ON.

God of War PSP Entertainment Pack
In June, a new PSP Entertainment Pack will be hitting stores, featuring the famous face of the Ghost of Sparta - Kratos. Here's what you get in the bundle, which will be available for $199.99 (MSRP):

* Limited-Edition "Deep Red" PSP with Kratos silkscreened on the back
* God of War: Chains of Olympus
* Superbad on UMD video
* Voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from PLAYSTATION Store for free

God of War: Chains of Olympus still arrives for PSP on March 4, 2008.
Whether or not you Kratos fans know who God of War II's gifted Game Director Cory Barlog is, you should be happy to hear that Sony is pretty sure it can handle the God of War franchise without him. Which is good, because he's left the company.

Loot Ninja just got an email from Sony with some new info on God of War: Chains of Olympus for the PSP. Ru Weerasuriya, the game's director, shred some light on Eos, the Goddess of Dawn. Eos is one of the first helpful characters in the game, and the Cave of Eos is the level that players will get to battle their way into to get her help to progress in the game.

"God of War is a mix of cool elements that together make up an amazing franchise. From the story elements to the visceral combat, from the challenge to the epic visuals, it immerses the player into a world they want to keep coming back to. We keep this all in mind when creating any God of War level, such as the Cave of Eos in God of War: Chains of Olympus. In this level, the player is introduced to Eos, the Goddess of Dawn. She will reveal events of the story that will lead you further in your quest, but getting to her is no easy task. You will have to defeat a multitude of enemies to progress, one of which is a new take on a God of War classic, the blood-lusting Minotaur. The rewards awaiting you are a new magic granted by Eos that adds to the vast array of mechanics Kratos already possesses. But to advance to the end of the level, Kratos will have to prove himself by using his new abilities to solve a challenge so deadly it could have only been created by the Gods of Olympus."
Can Sony transpose the awesomeness of the God of War series on PS2 to PSP? Well, let's hope so. But why not form an early opinion based off these brand new screens?

God of War: Chains of Olympus is due out early next year. Here's the scoop: the story takes place after Kratos is deceived into killing his own wife and children by Ares.

Renouncing Ares and now known as the "Ghost of Sparta," he enters the service of the other Olympian Gods seeking absolution from his sins. The game ...
When it was revealed that God of War was heading to PSP, fans went into an excited, cold sweat. This, after all, is the action game on PlayStation 2 right now. Better news was to come when Sony revealed that its new star developer Ready At Dawn was coding the game - Daxter is still one of the best platform games on any console.

After such promise, the biggest compliment we can pay Chains of Olympus is that it plays exactly like the two God of War games on PS2. Granted, not the most memorable ...
God of War: Chains of Olympus developer Ready at Dawn has revealed it's planning to take advantage of the full power of PSP's CPU, which was unlocked in firmware update 3.50 last month.

The firmware update allowed developers to make use of the processor's full 333MHz clock speed; previously it was capped at 266MHz, although most games have actually run at 222MHz.

"Everything that was shown of GoW: Chains of Olympus so far was runing at 222Mhz like everyone else. We are planning on having the ...
Surely Sony Computer Entertainment would be mad not to bring its flagship gore-fest God of War to the PlayStation 3 - and if the latest hints are anything to go by, the Santa Monica studio is at least considering it.

"There's definitely the enthusiasm of us wanting to do that, to make the God of War III," series director Cory Barlog told ShackNews, "but there's obviously no commitment to that right now."

Right, so officially they're not working on it but that doesn't stop him offering ...
The big problem with cell phone games is that they tend to be designed for non-gamers. Sure, we know there are probably a zillion more copies of Snake out there slithering around on cell phones than there are Gears of War spinning in 360s, but that doesn't mean Snake doesn't suck. However, that may all be about to change with the release of God of War Betrayal, the first mobile game we've seen that actually had us pricing a new phone.

Slated to hit this June for Verizon customers and in July ...
The first evidence of a PSP outing for bald-headed blood spiller Kratos has appeared in the form of a teaser trailer.

Titled God of War: Chains of Olympus and developed by Ready at Dawn (the people behind the really rather good PSP title, Daxter ), the brief snippet reveals that all the signature gore, lavish combos and weapon-based brutality are present, which should help make this portable adventure every bit as gratifying as its PS2 quests.

While we're waiting for official details about ...
Sony Computer Entertainment appears to have dropped the name of Kratos' ultra-violent PSP outing, God of War: Chains of Olympus. The news comes from super-secret marketing site Island of Rhodes, which seems to have spelled out the entire title of the mysterious God of War game.

We're assuming Chains of Olympus is the much-touted PSP series entry, because we can't really see a 'III' fitting on the end of that logo - though the third, PS3 entry is undoubtedly under construction.

We'll let you ...
PSP996(Member of QJ) was able to show its direction: Gamestop has God of War dated. Now if you're familiar with how these "Gamestop release dates" go, you'd know that this doesn't always automatically confirm anything.
In any case, the plus side is, what "November 1" shows us is a possible time frame when we can expect the game to come. A possible tentative time frame, if you want to be more cautious about it.
