QOTW: What's the first game you bought on your own?

Answer our weekly question and check out our favorite user answers from last week!

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Every week the hosts of TalkRadar present and answer a new "Question of the Week" - a personal inquiry which unearths some of our deepest, and sometimes most sinister, gaming memories. Everyone is encouraged to answer each week's question, so go ahead, tell us your most glorious, nostalgic, or shameful story!

This week's question:

What's the first game you bought on your own?

It could be the first game you bought after escaping the bonds of your parents with your very own driver's license, or the first game you bought with money you earned from your first job. In other words, what was the first game you acquired without having to beg for a Christmahanaquanzika present?

Answer this week's question in the comments!

Questions can also be answered in the QOTW forum thread. Our favorite posts this week will be read next week on TalkRadar 70, and appear in the next edition of this article. Listen to TalkRadar 69 on Friday for our answers!

Last week's question:

What's your fondest Sega memory?

Below are a few of last week's answers that tickled our collective fancies, but since we can't feature them all here, check out last week's article and forum thread for more...

"Whenever the SEGA logo sound came up my idiot friend would yell BAGELS. For years I thought that it said bagels. I didn't stop to think because I was just a little kid who hadn't heard of Sega before, all I wanted to do was play Sonic the Hedgehog."

"This is easy and covers two games. Now when I was young I was in Nintendo’s camp, not because I liked them better but because we were poor. We owned a NES but my parents never bought a SNES instead every couple months we would rent one for the weekend from blockbuster, this later became the N64. Now we picked Nintendo systems because we knew them, it was rare we got to play a system so we wanted only fun stuff to play. So Sega and later Sony were ignored because we did not know them, we did end up getting a PC so I became a PC Gamer growing up playing shareware and game demos. But I knew about sonic and I really wanted to play his games. So fast forward years and I am at a London Drugs in there computer section and there is Sonic CD for PC!!! and I was so happy. Then a few years later I got Sonic and Knuckles for PC!! I was so glad that these games came out for PC and I still have both of them as seen in the pic I am posting with this. Sadly I have long since lost the case for Sonic CD."

"...my fondest memory has got to be the Sega Channel. I played pretty much every single Genesis game, legally (this was before the Gens and Kega emulators), and for only 11 bucks a month. Early demos called "Test Drives" of Earthworm Jim 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 blew my mind and unreleased games (in america anyways) such as Worms, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, and Battle Frenzy became some of my favorite genesis titles. I still remember the boot up and menu music like it was just yesterday."

"playing Shenmue as a 10 year old. Absolutely blew my mind, and completely changed my entire perspective on what games could be. Feel entirely indebted to Yu Suzuki, i doubt i'd still be gaming if not for Shenmue. I'd never seen a game with that much freedom in controlling the character, and with such a huge city to explore, with so damn much to do. I'd never even in my wildest dreams imagined how real a games world and protagonist could be, completely immersed myself in the whole game. And at that age, the pace of the game was utterly perfect for me, and things i'd probably hate if i played it now (QTEs, forklift minigames, etc) i absolutely loved at the time."

"Unfortunately, i never actually owned a Dreamcast, and my older brother had borrowed it from a friend in exchange for our N64, and despite the ~100 hours i played the game, i never got to the end of the game before my brother swapped the console back. also never got to finish Jet Set Radio, TrickStyle or Tomb Raider: The Last Chronicles. The bastard.

So actually, that's both my best and worst Sega memory."

"Like many, mine was figuring out how to get past the first loop-de-loop in the first Sonic the Hedgehog on the first level. I tried on about 5 separate occasions to do it, until I realized I had to hold right after about 10 minutes of pondering it. Man, did I feel stupid..."

Toy Story 2 for the Playstation.
Just like every other 7 year old at the time, anything with Disney printed on it in shiny, big letters, was immediately cool.
I had spare pocket money given from my Aunt so I thought "Why not buy the game of my favourite film?". I enjoyed it so much, I remember striving to collect every single token to reach the final levels to rescue Woody.
I hate it so much now.

The first game I bought on my own was super mario world on the gameboy advance when I saw some kid selling it in the school cafeteria.

Chicken Run on the Playstation. I had money spare from my paper round.
I was 9 at the time I think and I remember saying "Wow! The Chicken Run movie is meant to be great! This is going to be better!".
WRONG. On so many levels.
It was essentially MGS with chickens. And no plot. And replace the cardboard box with a leather boot.

I am not sure what the last game for me was: I think it was Spider-Man 2, believe it or not, although I think I also bought Assassin's Creed, inFamous, LBP, The Force Unleashed, Bad Company, and possibly a few others on my own as well.

Oh lord that was way back. I think it was Ocarina of Time actually. I had been renting it over and over because I was a stupid kid that didn't know you could buy games. I had never gotten anywhere either because the rented one always had files so I just messed around on those and didn't know what to do. when I finally bought it it took me... about a year to beat it.

Oh dear God no, dont make me mention it! PLEASE!!! Ah, deep breaths, okay. The first game i ever brought was Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. Yuck, i hate saying that. Spyro used to be, next to Mario, my favourite games character ever, but when i played SETD, everything changed. It was annoying, tedious, crap and most importantly, as hard as Master Chief's shoulders. I hated it, and i still do. Believe me, its harder than both Ikaruga and Ninja Gaiden combined, and thats an understatment.

The first game my brother and I ever bought was Halo 2. I don't know how we did it though, we were too young for jobs and we didn't have a weekly allowance or anything, no way of obtaining money, but we somehow managed to buy Halo 2 for the Xbox because it blew our minds at our friends' house.

I can't remember what the first game I bought on my own was, but I bought my 360 all by myself after trading in games I had beaten from christmahanakwanzika, I felt very accomplished since the darn thing was so expensive. I remember getting Dead Rising right away, I still have yet to beat it, but I always have so much fun just randomly hitting zombies with benches, tvs, and other things.

The first game I remember buying for myself was DOOM!!! So many years lost, curse you John Carmack!

the first game I bought by myself was none other than the original Super Smash Bros for the N64. Man, that was a great game. I still play Super Smash Bros brawl once in a while, which uses the same formula and gameplay. But despite how long and how often I've played the games with my friends and the terrible online for Brawl, the only character I can use fairly well is Kirby.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 last year (on the same day). I had played 1 and 4, so I saved some money and bought them. That was probably one of the best days of my life =D

Spider-Man for the PS1. I was walking a dog for cash at the time and I saved for a while for that game. And it paid off too! That game was awesome!!
