OMFG News of the Year 2007

All the videogame news that made us go "WTF?!!1"

GameSpot fire Jeff Gerstmann

When a fellow wordsmith is axed from his job for seemingly doing his job to the best of his ability, it's one hell of a shock. Jeff Gerstmann's 'termination' by GameSpot, allegedly after a less than favourable review of Kane & Lynch, so surprised nearby videogame journos that they gathered to show their support.

We'll never know what really happened, and there's no point guessing. But we do know that Gerstmanngate (sigh) was easily the biggest shock of the year, turning the internets into a frothing mass - only goaded on by Eidos' own actions.

Vivendi and Activision come together

To form... Activision Blizzard. Ick. Fortunately, such an ugly name will never be used for anything other than the sorts of dreary financial boardroom meetings where the arrangement was made in the first place.

But the name wasn't the real shocker - more the fact that with Activison and Vivendi's publishing might combined into some kind of mega-publisher, Electronic Arts can no longer expect to be the biggest game pusher on the block. Boring story, perhaps, but amazing potential.

PlayStation 3 outsells Wii in Japan

It's not all over for PS3! And, actually, it's no upward blip either - Sony's next-gen powerhouse had a cracking November, outselling the Wii over the course of the entire month in Japan. And, with Wiis in terribly short supply this December, Sony could yet steal Christmas in the other territories, too. About time Sony got some good news, we reckon.

That was the year in OMFG news, but what about the year as a whole? We reckon 2007 was the best year ever for videogames, and we want to tell you why.
