Grand Theft Auto: Loose ends

A look back at the unfinished stories the juggernaut series left in its wake

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
2005 | PSP, PS2

This offshoot fleshed out characters like Toni Cipriani, who on the surface appeared to be as one-dimensional as Jean Claude Van Damme’s movie career. In GTA III he’s nothing more than a walking homage to Tony Soprano, juggling his time between running his family restaurant, ordering hits and having control issues with his overbearing mother. But he didn’t fall into favor with the Leone family simply because his name sounded a bit Italian; Liberty City Stories follows Cipriani as he seeks to find favor with the Don, which he achieves by - hold onto something! - shooting up cars and assassinating people.

Tony Cipriani
The first (and therefore the last) time we saw Big Tone, he was considerably fatter and older than he was back in '98, presumably porking himself up in a bid to end his mother’s endless "skinny" jibes. As one of the highest ranked members of the Leone Family, Cipriani presumably was right in the thick of things after the death of Salvatore Leone forced a restructure. How will the loyal-yet-tempestuous Cipriani take the news that slacking grease monkey Joey Leone is the rightful heir to Salvatore’s XXL-sized throne? Our guess: not particularly well, really.
