ELSPA has declared that the British videogames industry hit an all time high in 2006 with a 7 per cent increase in the number of games sold - bringing the total figure to 65.1 million units. All-formats sales totalled GBP 1.36 billion - a new record, according to ELSPA, and an increase of 1 per cent over the figure for 2005. The majority of console games purchased were for PlayStation 2, followed by Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii and GameCube. PC titles did well, with software sales up 7 per cent - making 2006 the platform's best year ever.

Today Ubisoft confirmed that the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game, based on the upcoming CGI film, is in development for Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, PC, GBA, DS, GameCube and Wii. The game is being developed by Ubisoft's Montreal and Quebec City studios, and will be available on March 13, 2007.

A recent study by ABI Research (that's Video Game End-User Perceptions: Entering the Next Generation, if you want the formalities) revealed that 60% PS2 owners are likely to get a PS3, 46% of GameCube owners are likely to get a Wii, while 45% of of Xbox owners plan to buy an Xbox 360.

A smart chap has coded an application allowing a GameCube title, the Japanese version of Zelda: Wind Waker, to run on the PSP. Not perfectly, of course, since it has no sound, is laggy, and for some reason all buttons are being pressed down at the same time.

Leading independent publisher THQ Inc. today announced the release of the Cars video game, based upon the highly anticipated Disney/Pixar film, for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, Xbox video and game entertainment system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP (PlayStation Portable) system, Windows PC and Mac, at retail outlets nationwide.
