PSN bans begin going out today

Thepromised PlayStation Network bansfor jail breakers started coming through today. Many pirates and tinkerers are receiving a message that read, "You cannot use the PlayStation Network with this account (8002a227)" when they try to log on.

Previously, jail breakers were able to use alternate DNS servers or forged SSL certificates to subvert PSN protection measures. What's unclear is what's causing the bans. Detection of pirated software, custom firmware, and circumvention of PSN security are all legitimate reasons for banning. However, there's such an overlap between users engaging in all three practices that it's hard to determine what Sony is using to determine bans.
