what does this do that the PS3 can't do? I can understand why Wii U was launched because the Wii was underpowered and the tablet controller creates a new dimension, but PS3 & 360 are already powerful enough so these launches don't seem required. It looks like we are expected to pay £400 for a new console that will play COD5 that looks a bit better than COD4.

what does this do that the PS3 can't do? Plenty. Instant load times, background downloads of both games AND updates, Potentially being able to stream every game that has touched a Sony console, instantly upload videos to the web, view or let others view or even help in your game. Not to mention that better specs means not jsut better visuals but better frame-rate and less bugs and potential shitfests like the Bayonetta or Skyrim ports. Is that not enough for you? (And seriously, if you think the PS3 and 360 are "powerful enough" you clearly have your head stuck in the ground when it comes to PC gaming, and even now, more and more new games are struggling to run smoothly on account to the shitty RAM memory both current systems have. So no, they are NOT powerful enough, at least, not for the future to come)

I have a PC rig and all three current gen consoles. Honestly, the graphics are sharper but thats about it. Its pretty much the same experience. Maybe that wasnt true 20 years ago, but consoles have grown in leaps and bounds since then and they only continue to develope faster as more money is put into them.

Well, I wasn't referring to just graphical quality, although I am pretty sure that for a lot of games (example: Skyrim) the textures of objects are noticeably more detailed. And there's also the thing that in general, high end PCs run games with almost no loading times, and a much better more stable frame-rate. And keep in mind that is is from someone who is pretty much a Console gamer. I love my consoles, but I also know and acknowledge the power PCs have, which is why that even though I am perfectly content with the current gen consoles, and plan to keep with them for a couple more years, I also recognize and understand why more powerful machines are now wanted and asked for.

I notice no difference in framerate and I know Im on the internet and you cant trust everything I say, but I do have a top of the line gaming rig. The graphics ARE better and yes, its noticable, but its not this huge drastic leap alot of PC elitists claim it to be. Coming from them, you would think its like comparing the PS1 to the PS3 and its more like comparing blue ray to dvd.
  • BladedFalcon - February 25, 2013 12:27 a.m.

Oh, I agree there, I know PC elitists make a huge deal out of the differences, and I don't really think they are that big, considering I enjoy games on consoles just fine as it is. Still, the differences are there, and as for the frame-rate thing, well I personally can't even really notice the difference between 30 and 60 FPS, and I'd guess most people don't either. But then, others like UK editor Justin Towell do, and he even made an argument about the importance of having all future games run on FPS, so there's that. Overall, I really do agree with you on this, I do not see the huge leap anymore, but unlike what the OP said, there definitely ARE difference between these new machines than the current ones, and even if the graphical leap isn't as big this time around, it's still a step that was inevitable to be made, so might as well accept it sooner than later.

I agree, I think the PS4 & the XBOX720 should wait! Both consoles will offer games that pretty much look the same as now which for me being in the industry is a bore!!! A lot of the games appear the same quality which is not next-gen, but now-gen. However I don't own SONY or Microsoft, I only work with them!!! I had a major idea for games, specifically with SONY that could work well! That's why I'm surprised the consoles are coming out now! The issues they are addressing for the new consoles could have easily been done for the present consoles with the exception of some of the tech specs! Game wise though is where my game ideas (Hopefully PS4 picks it up later) will excel for the console like we did for the PS3! Games we worked on like the Killzone Franchise & Metal Gear Solid: Guns Of The Patriots were outstanding & we have some brilliant ideas that will make gamers very happy if they pick it up soon! If you see something revolutionary game wise,, you heard it here 1st! I have 2 keep secrets but check out GameTrailers TV on SPIKE & the Tech/Gaming shows I will produce on the upcoming Esquire Network re-branding of G4 sometime late this year or after! Then we could call the newest consoles Next-Gen! For now, they all will be now generation consoles until I can get these specific type of games I'm working with out there!!!

Why do these game developers keep jumping between CPU architectures with every console generation. It's the main reason why games aren't backwards compatible. Nintendo kept it the same going from gamecube to Wii (unfortunately not the Wii U). Microsoft did not going from Xbox to X360, and Sony did not going from PS2 to PS3. Anyway, it's hard to look forward to something new by Sony. They have a history coming up with all sorts of great ideas on paper, then only having 100% implementation on a tiny portion of them, 50% on most, and ditching the rest after failure (either from lackluster marketing or little to no usage). PS3 sixaxis motion feature, remote play on the original PSP, EyeToy support, and PS Home just to name a few that barely took off the ground. And SquareEnix already talking about another FF game? Have they got anything started for KH3, *IF* they are even doing anything? I'm probably going to wait for about a year after its release do see how it does, and would only get it if a game grabs my attention.

Most important thing I got from this is that FromSoftware is developping for the PS4. Which means Dark souls II will be on next-gen consoles
  • zombi3grim - February 24, 2013 6:20 p.m.

No. Thats not what that means.
  • Falcon4196 - February 21, 2013 7:42 a.m.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the while predicting what games you want and preloading them for you thing to be creepy. I hope that if it does happen that they let yo turn it off. Otherwise imagine what that could potential do to those of of uss with data caps. I wish that someone had gotten on stage and killed the whole no used games rumor. That would have given me some peice of mind. Well nothing to do now but wait and see. The price is going to be key.
  • Falcon4196 - February 21, 2013 8:20 a.m.

Never mind on the used games Sony has officially said that PS4 will play them.

What a load of firetrucking garbage! My gaming is my firetrucking business. I have ZERO wish to have anyone watch me play, or talk to anyone! All motion controls are the biggest firetrucking waste of everyones time and money to ever stink up gaming! The move is firetrucking gimmicky trash! No one uses the firetrucking eyetoy now! It's epically pointless and useless trash, it always was, it always will be. No one with any sense even uses motion controls! They have firetrucking lost the plot. So they are going to try to force MORE game on us now? They want to tell us what we want to buy now! They think people want to have their space taken up by them forcing games on us! I PICK MY FIRETRUCKING GAMES, NOT THEM! I am most definately NOT the sort who buys the same games all the time! I buy what I want, from any genre. The controller looks like firetrucking cheap garbage! That decides it. I'm getting a xbox next generation if they don't go stupid too! And if they do, I'm going PC gaming!
  • BladedFalcon - February 21, 2013 9:31 a.m.

Try not to firetruck those too much though, lol.
  • MolokoVeck - February 21, 2013 11:49 a.m.

I don't see what's wrong with giving people options. I am sure you will have privacy options where you can choose for the system to not suggest games, and you can choose to not allow others to view while you are playing games. I am not a big fan of the social aspect either, but these are just additional, optional features. What's the firetrucking problem?
  • PatHan-bHai - February 25, 2013 9 a.m.

    firetrucking?
  • Chaoscoolperson - February 21, 2013 7:29 a.m.

So will I be able to buy PS3 games for this? Cause there were a lot of those I wanted to play. Otherwise this REALLY sparked my interest and I can't wait to hear more. Hopefully Microsoft sounds equally awesome, or not, so I won't have to choose this generation.

The only thing that got me excited, or perhaps relieved, was the inclusion of the Vita. I was really hoping they wouldn't leave that for dead. The controller seems interesting, but potentially more trouble than it's worth. Same with the interface. I really dislike the idea of them downloading games I "might" like for me. I like a wide range of games and tend to be unpredictable, even to myself, regarding which games I like and which I don't like.

Slide 15 - My assumption is that this actually has Advertising implications much like Amazon, Zappos, Google, etc. Sony already sells ads within their marketplace, so it wouldn't be a leap to assume they are going to collect data on users to "better serve" advertisements.

Day 1 for this baby. I can't wait!
  • GrandTheftAuto - February 21, 2013 4:03 a.m.

Ehm sorry Gamesradar, but you have a mistake on one point of the specs, I think. It doesnt have 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Because that doesnt exist. It has 8GB's of RAM yes, but the GDDR5 is for the GPU.
  • MrSpoiler17 - February 21, 2013 4:24 a.m.

The GDDR5 is for system memory. Sounds crazy but it's true. Lots of confirmation about it on the web.
  • MrSpoiler17 - February 21, 2013 4:30 a.m.

    Straight from Sony themselves. http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/130221a_e.pdf

    Holy shit!!! Sorry!

I hate the format these articles are in now, a while ago it was nice, but you guys changed it. Is there an option to change it?
