X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged Edition

Wolverine cuts loose

We take a look at the first game to really embrace his feral side

The Wolverine of videogames has always been a little different from the one in the comics, more so in violent approach than characterization. It's pretty standard in a Wolverine comic to see him stab someone in the head and then chop the body into bloody chunks, like a blender intended only for bad guys. Yet in games, his claws and feral sensibilities are toned down or meaningless all together. But this year's Wolverine title, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, despite being based on the upcoming film, seems to follows Wolvie's comic spirit pretty closely, with all the blood-coated claws and ripped off limbs that entails.

Our introduction to this concept came early in our time with the game, as we saw the opening cinema. Though the game proper takes place in his past, in the beginning we’re introduced to a Wolverine of now, or even years later, telling the title's story to us. But before that he has to kill a bunch a faceless goons.

The first man we see him kill with blood decorating the background. He then chops off another's arm, stabs someone else in the chest a few times more than necessary, then shoves his claws through a wall and into the head of the guy on the other side. To say we were shocked to see a Wolverine as cut-throat, literally, as the one we know on the printed page puts it lightly.

Once the actual game starts we're treated to a similar level of violence as Wolverine chops off one guy’s arm, throws another onto some spikes, then rips a guy in half. Raven, the developer, wants the combat to look and feel as satisfying to the players as it is for Logan on the screen. He has many combos built around even more gruesome dispatching, plus the ability to just dive at some enemies and stab them in the chest. It looks as if the devs, who've worked with Wolvie a few times in titles like X-Men Legends and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, are really enjoying taking the character to such a satisfyingly bloody extreme.

I was interested in this after reading about it in EGM's final published issue. (I MISS YOU, EGM!) It looks brutally awesome. I read in EGM that you can throw yourself into a jet engine in order to get it to crash. That's just sick beyond belief. I also love that the healing/punishment techniques used in games(looking at you Gears) actually makes sense for Wolverine.

Looks like a BEAST of a game.

One thing always bothered me about Wolverine. He had super sharp claws made basically for brutal kills, and was a part of a team that was all about not killing. Look at cyclops, he shoots super powerful, destructive (not anything living though) force and others can freeze ppl, control weather, control minds. I mean cyclops is also a stretch but its do-able to cover it up, but wolverine cannot change what claws do in a fight ie. cut ppl. SO for family friendly wolverine, he pulls out his claws and will never touch a human body with it( sometimes just pulling them out and putting them back when he punches). This game finally puts this guy in his proper shoes, he is meant to be this destructive. BTW i am not a fanboy, its just that i watched a lot of the shows randomly as they came on tv and i know what he is supposed to be like from when i was a kid and actually read the comics. This comment is 12 yrs of pent up (and now, released)nerd-anger. So in conclusion, even if this game sucks, at least it is true to his nature.

Wow. The graphics in these screen shots are actually very good. Is that possible foor a game based on a movie which in turn is based on a superhero(Ironman, Hulk, Superman all terrible.) I guess its a double negative which then makes it a positive. Thats logical right? Anyway I will get this game because its what ive always wanted to see wolverine do. These guys should make a superman game next.I mean come on he has superstrength but doesnt crush peoples bones, heat vision that melts steel but not ppl, and the one that bugs me the most he is indestructible yet takes bullet damage and ducks when ppl throw things at him WTF. Anyway sweet lookin game.

If ever a comic character were tailor-made for great videogames, it has to be Wolverine. Let's hope this one gets it right for once.

BTW my captcha says "All birthplace." Nasty.

Looks pretty cool, although I'm very skeptical since it's 1) a movie tie-in and 2) an X-MEN movie tie-in. I'm glad they've finally adapted Wolverine's healing factor to a video game, though. If only Master Chief and all the other FPS grunts hadn't already been doing it for about 5 years now...
