When the NPD Group released its non-PC US game sales figures for August earlier today, one of the month's highest-profile titles was missing in action. Neither the Xbox 360 nor the PlayStation 3 version of Wolfenstein cracked the top 10, despite the classic id shooter reboot being promoted by Activision--which was shut out of the top 10 entirely.

How poorly did Wolfenstein fare? According to NPD numbers obtained by GameSpot, the 360 version sold just over 59,000 units, with the PS3 edition barely clearing 30,000. Add in the PC iteration's 17,000 units, and Wolfenstein sold only around 106,000 units in the five days from its August 25 launch to August 29, when NPD's monthly reporting period ended.

On the same day that Activision releases its latest title in the Wolfenstein franchise, GamesIndustry.biz can confirm that a number of the team responsible for the multiplayer portion of the game have been laid off.

UK based Endrant Studios had been co-developing Wolfenstein with Raven Software, and it was the first title by the team since forming in July 2008.

Developed by Raven Software under the supervision of id Software, Wolfenstein is a sequel to the 2001 shooter Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The new game drops players into the army boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, who is once again sent behind enemy lines to thwart Hitler's occult ambitions. For this go-around, players will harness the power of a sought-after artifact to combat Hitler's own freakish army of evil. Wolfenstein features robust online gameplay that includes three modes: Team Deathmatch, Objective, and Stopwatch.

Activision has released Wolfenstein's launch trailer as the game will hit the shelves on August 18 in North America. In Europe, it's a bit more complicated as it seems only the PC version will be released next week whereas console players will have to wait until August 28.

In a stroke of what could be seen as marketing genius, or insane offerings by an over worked designer, the offer has been thrown out to get your copy of Wolfenstein paid for. Raven and id Software's Wolfenstein won't be opening a portal to retail the first week of August, as previously planned. The latest game to be hit by a summer delay will now ship a few weeks later, Activision confirmed today.

Why? According to an Activision spokesperson, the delay was made "in order to facilitate a simultaneous global release window for id Software's Wolfenstein."

Activision has therefore "realigned the game's release date for the week beginning August 17th." Kotaku is sure that goals were realized to some degree of synergy.

Just how many Nazis you kill is tracked in the menus, right down to the different ways you've killed them (from electrocutions to dismemberments). MTV Multiplayer's Russ Frushtick asked to take a photo of the menu screen which tallied up the deaths, but since it was only from the one-level demo they were showing, the numbers were pretty paltry. Thankfully Activision just sent over a shot of the menu from 36% into the game, and here's what things were looking like.

Destructoid writes: Prior to speaking with id Software's community manager Peter Sokol -- literally seconds before our interview -- I researched the Wolfenstein franchise. I read a few blurbs on Internet Web sites, tried to get through a preview or two, and clicked a few random links on Wikipedia. Through my careful research and analysis, I found that the Wolfenstein franchise has never starred a wolf and neither will Raven Software's new title. What's up with that?

Speaking with me about the lack of a wolf protagonist in Wolfenstein, Sokol confirmed that players wouldn't be able to play as a wolf. "[There is nothing in Wolfenstein] about a wolf," Sokol said. "It dates back to 1992 where you gave Blazkowicz the Office of Secret Actions agent, who's just – he's the guy they send in when the chips are down and the Nazis are researching all this dark science. He's the only guy they can really trust to get the job done. So, you play a one man army, not a wolf, but a one man army."

A public Photobucket gallery containing alleged images from Raven Entertainment's upcoming Wolfenstein has emerged thanks to an unnamed "industry source," reports Shacknews.

The 22 images contained in the gallery don't display much in the way of gameplay, but they do give a good feel for the game's architecture and graphical capabilities -- assuming they are indeed from the upcoming game.

While publisher Activision refuses to comment on the images, they do appear genuine given what we've seen of the game so far.

''Id Software and Raven may be returning to Wolfenstein to blow up a legion of new Nazis on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, but Adolf Hitler won't be among them.
