Xbox 360 owners rejoiced when Sega and AM2 announced that their version of Virtua Fighter 5 would incorporate long desired online multiplayer features, but PlayStation 3 gamers who'd picked up the game earlier in the year felt left in the cold. A Games Convention 2007 interview with AM2 Assistant Manager Tohru Murayama at Total Video Games, however, provides hope for the future.

Murayama acknowledged that PS3 owners are disappointed and suggested there was "no doubt" AM2 could theoretically release a patch to add online multiplayer features to the PS3 version.

Eurogamer has learned that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 may not be released in Japan due to the console's low installed base.

Speaking at last week's Leipzig Games Convention, lead designer Tohru Murayama said "it's true" that 360 has not proved too popular with Japanese gamers.

He continued, "We haven't decided if we'll release Virtua Fighter 5 [on 360] in Japan because of that.
Some games truly evolve. Prince of Persia, for instance, is now a million miles from where it started. So too, Sonic the Hedgehog and even Mario. Over the last ten years, these games have either changed direction totally, or shaken up the basic gameplay elements and crafted a similar yet far-removed experience. Some other games... haven't.

These are the games that refuse to change. Like Dick Clark, they look the same as they always did. Like Friends, they found a formula that worked and stuck ...
This is hardcore. Or so everyone says. But what is "hardcore?" To us gamers, it means the kind of game that serious gamers devote their time to. You know, hundreds of hours of time. The kind of game that kept Granny away from gaming until Wii came along. It's about depth - of learning and understanding a game before truly mastering it. Hardcore games present the greatest (and often longest) challenges, yet also the biggest payoffs, assuming you understand how they work.

The votes have been tallied and the Best of E3 2007 Winners have been announced.

Rock Band with 3 seperate votes took first...just barely ahead of Mass Effect who placed second with 2 votes. However, the surprise comes with the games that took the rest of the places:

Bioshock
Burnout Paradise
Call of Duty 4
Crysis
Halo 3
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Madden NFL 08
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Virtua Fighter 5
World in Conflict

Gamecriticsawards.com even broke down the tally further and the console with the most wins was...Xbox 360 (acquiring 11 wins), followed in second by the Playstation 3 (aquiring 8 votes). Third place was the PC (with 4 votes), and tied for fourth was both the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Oddly enough, the PSP was last...not even getting one game on the list this year!

There have been a lot of rumors since Virtua Fighter 5 was announced for the Xbox 360. Would there be Xbox Live multiplayer or wouldn't there be? SEGA, at first, said: 'No, it wont', but today SEGA confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will indeed be featuring online multiplayer duels over Xbox Live.

And that's not all. The Xbox 360 version will feature the latest update in playmechanics from the Arcade version. Also, the Quest Mode has been expanded, with more CPU-opponents to fight with as well as more objects and articles to customize your character with. That's not all because the DOJO-mode will also be receiving an update on the Xbox 360 version. New functions have been added, like: rankings, training settings, throw- and defensive training as well as a feature to adjust the opponents health and position.

Probably the biggest improvement will be the addition of online multiplayer duels through Xbox Live. Players can compete 1-on-1 with any player from around the world. Players can choose from a total of 17 different characters, which are all individually customizable. Each character has four different costumes but more costumes can be unlocked by playing the Quest Mode. Release: Autumn 2007.
Writer Christian Nutt (har har) raved about his time with the game, saying it looked as good, if not better, than the already released PlayStation 3 game.

Today, Sega released a few new screens of the game and well, it looks ... not that bad. It doesn't look that great either, so what's up?
As part of our PS3 launch week coverage extravaganza, we've joined forces with our sparring partners at Sega to give one very lucky GamesRadar reader the chance to win a PlayStation 3, plus a copy of the hard hitting arcade bruiser, Virtua Fighter 5.

In addition to being a games playing powerhouse, Sony's shiny new console does movies (Blu-ray and DVD), music, photos, lets you browse the internet, socialise online... Basically, PlayStation 3 is a totally sweet and muchos ...
When Sega released Virtua Fighter in 1993 - the world's first 3D beat-em-up - it changed gaming forever. VF1 was embryonic, but a vital step towards VF5 - perhaps the ultimate 3D fighting game. But before we start the fanfare, there are things you should know.

If you didn't like VF4 - and this plays identically - you won't like this. Secondly, although it oozes quality from every pixel, most people we've played have said "looks nice", messed about for five minutes and left without coming back. ...
It can be a daunting task to break through that hard outer shell to reach the rich, creamy center of VF5. What's a complete noob to ...

Regarding the title "Dojo", which means training hall, I'm a bit worried since I have no idea to what extent it will be accepted. Those who love martial arts or professional wrestling would understand the term, but I don't think it is a well-known Japanese word like sushi or samurai. In short, a DOJO is the place for practice or training of Martial arts such as JUDO and KENDO (Japanese fencing). As far as the DOJO in VF5, this is the mode that lets you train the characters of your choosing."

Things are looking up for the PlayStation 3 in Japan this week, as stellar Sega bruiser installment Virtua Fighter 5 blasts up the charts to snatch the console's first ever number one.

The fighter beat off Nintendo titles Wii Sports, Wii Play, Brain Age and New Super Mario Brothers for the top slot, selling 48,000 copies since it was released in the country almost two weeks ago.

Despite blitzing the competition in the sales charts though, the Wii continues to dominate Sony's console on the ...

"Sony's PlayStation 3 has taken plenty of knocks since its release in November, between the gaudy price tag and perceived lack of quality games.

But the PS3 hits back with SEGA's Virtua Fighter 5, a stunning brawler and one of the console's bright spots.

Much like its debut more than 15 years ago, Virtua Fighter's next chapter boasts a dynamic battle system both easy for beginners to learn yet complex enough to entice experts.

Fighting boils down to three actions: Punch, kick and block. Sounds simple enough, but each character can turn those moves into over 50 different throws and combinations.

Right away, the PS3's horsepower is evident in sharply-detailed character models and arenas. Chiseled muscles and individual strands of hair are easy to spot, while background elements like water splash vividly."
PlayStation 3's Virtua Fighter 5 has beaten off massed opposition from Nintendo to top the Japanese sales chart in its first week, giving Sony its first ever PS3 chart topper - and making it the first PS3 game to enter the top ten - in Japan since the next-gen console launched last November.

The rest of the top ten boasts seven titles from Nintendo platforms, five of those released on DS, and two PS2 games. Meanwhile in the hardware chart, Sony spanked Microsoft, ...
Looks like Crackdown has some strong competition on its hands. Interestingly, this is the HIGHEST score EGM has awarded over the past six months.

Oh Friday, we reported that Japan was exactly kookoo for Virtua Fighter 5. To put things into perspective, Japanese game blog Ore Teki Game Sokuhou @ Katana points out the following:

* February 8th, 2007
* 600,000 PS3s
* Virtua Fighter 5 Copies Sold: 30,000

* December 29th, 2005
* 80,000 Xbox 360s
* Dead or Alive 4 Copies Sold: 60,000

Not exactly a system seller. (That, dear readers, should be the upcoming Gundam Musou!)
Virtua Fighter 5 is not only the latest in Sega's huge beat-'em-up series, but it also looks to be one of the PS3's best-looking games so far.

Just look at the high-res awesomeness of this game, particularly the lighting in some of the sunset scenes and the super-sharp textures. It's going to look sweet running in 1080p on a nice 50" ...
AsoBitCity in Akihabara had a hands-on for customers that was so slow, a Sega employee apparently killed time by playing the title alone. And why should it be a hit? Sure, VF hasn't really matter to most Western gamers since, oh, 1997, but the game has a huge following in Japan.
Much like the Winning Eleven series, there are two ways to play Virtua Fighter games. Theres the “casual” post-bar, fight-it-out-with-a-friend kind of way, and then theres the slavish, almost scientific approach - fueled by the sort of devotion thats made the series so hugely popular in Japanese arcades.

For those who prefer option one, Virtua Fighter 5 wont disappoint. On the surface, its definitely a next-gen game, with hyper-detailed looks not so different from the stunning ...

Virtua Fighter 5 is nearing release (in Japan at least) as further details about the port became apparent in the latest issue of Famitsu.

Perhaps the most notable revelation is the fact that the game can be installed on the PS3 HDD to bring loading times closer inline with an arcade fighter. Exactly how much of the 50GB blu-ray disc will be installed on the 20 or 60GB drive, however, remains to be seen.

Around wednesday midnight GMT, Sony finally released the European launch details. They also released a huge list of launch titles, including system sellers like MotorStorm, Resistance, Virtua Fighter 5 and SPlinter Cell: Double Agent. Unfortunately, one title didn't show up: Rainbow Six Vegas. Was it delayed? Or did Sony just forget about Vegas?

It seems Sony just forget about Vegas. The dutch PLAYSTATION 3-website PS3 Only contacted Ubisoft Netherlands and they told 'em that Rainbow Six Vegas will still launch simultaniously with the PLAYSTATION 3 itself, on March 23rd.

There are just certain genres that need solid titles for a console to be competitive. Fighting games were notably missing from the PS3's launch lineup last year, but Sony's console is about to come back in a big way. Sega has announced that Virtua Fighter 5 for the PS3 has gone gold and will be available on store shelves in North America starting February 20th. The famed Virtua Fighter series will surely turn some heads towards the PS3's direction.

Australians still haven't been told exactly when in March the PlayStation 3 is set to launch, but at least local gamers are beginning to get a firm idea of exactly what games can be expected. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has now confirmed five of its titles will be there from the PS3's first day of sale, bringing the expected number of launch games to 17.

In a statement, SCEA confirmed Formula One Championship Edition, MotorStorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Resistance: Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7 would all be PS3 launch titles in Australia. No further details--such as a more specific launch date for the new console--were mentioned.

The Sony games join an expanding list of expected launch titles from other publishers, including Virtua Fighter 5 from Sega and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 from Ubisoft. The current list of Australian PS3 launch titles--gathered from each publisher's latest release schedules--is provided below.

Virtua Fighter 5 is a landmark game. The series has risen to the top of hardcore fighters' lists because of its unparalleled depth, and the PS3 version absolutely destroys the PS2 editions in terms of graphics. This is pure next gen. VF5 is the most realistic game in a series hailed for presenting the most lifelike fighting ever; the detail here makes high definition TVs ...

A supposed box images suggests a big update for Sega's prized fighter.

One of the big selling points for the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of Virtua Tennis is its support for 1080p resolution -- a huge update over the arcade version's 720p. So the big question was, would Virtua Fighter 5 get the same treatment?

The answer was presumably no, until an image of the back of the Japanese version's box appeared on Japanese fan sites today. Shown below, the supposed box image indicates that VF5 will join the small list of early PS3 titles to support "true HD."

Virtua Fighter 5 features stages from around the world where players face off in fast-moving martial arts battles against one of 17 characters. Two new characters join the elite group of fighters, adding unique fighting styles for players to try and master.

Sega confirms the latest version of its VF series will now launch on Xbox 360, as well as PS3

Tecmo's Dead or Alive series is about to get some serious competition for the king of fighters' throne on Xbox 360 in the form of Virtua Fighter 5, previously a PS3 only title.

Hopefully, the fact that VF is spreading out on multiple platforms will give the DOA series a much needed kick up the arse. But Sega's legendary beat 'em up franchise has taken a few knocks of its own over the last few years. Maybe it's just that the genre as a whole has gone as far as it can?

When a company announces a release date of Spring, you normally imagine something like March, or maybe May at the latest. But in the case of Virtua Fighter 5, Spring has ended up meaning February 8. Not that we should complain--nothing will warm up our cold winter rooms more than a few hours of Virtua Fighter 5 on the PS3. The game will retail for 8190 yen ($70), slightly more expensive than the two Virtua Fighter 4 games which sold for 7140 yen each on the PS2. Preorders of the game will come with Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary Reprint. This is the disc that originally came with Enterbrain's Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary book back in 2003, and is a version of the original Virtua Fighter game, using the system from Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution.

Following the release of Virtua Fighter 5, Sega will release a joystick for PS3, Virtua Stick High Grade, on February 15 for 7329 yen ($63). The stick features lever and buttons of arcade build quality and connects to the PS3 via USB cable.
A few have even plunked down the hefty wad of money to buy the arcade-only Virtua Fighter 4: Final Tuned. The game even caught on with US PS2 gamers - going Greatest Hits last time around. It's no surprise, then, that many of the people lining up in front of EBGames to reserve their $600 PS3 are buying their console primarily with the ...
Are you registered with Sega's VF.net service? Do you have a home internet connection, or failing that, access to a cell phone with web access?

If all this applies to you, you could play a starring role in the PlayStation 3 version of Virtua Fighter 5. Sega has started seeking VF5 arcade player data for use in the upcoming home version. Those players who are selected will have their character, with all equipped items, appear in the game, along with ring name, introductory text, battle record and level. These user characters will appear as rival characters, when you face off against the CPU for instance.
Thursday 28 September 2006
With a little jet lag from the Tokyo Game Show, a new round of in-game action screens from PS3's Virtua Fighter 5 have arrived.

After its triumphant TGS appearance, where we couldn't tell the difference between the arcade game and the PS3 version, we're pretty excited to get lounge-side seats to the most intense fighter in town.

Wednesday 19 July 2006
Sega has revealed a trailer of its forthcoming next gen beat-'em-up Virtua Fighter 5, which will be released for PlayStation 3 next spring.

Five new videos of Virtua Fighter 5's arcade version hit today, and we've got 'em all for your viewing pleasure.

The new videos feature full, unedited matches between Kage the ninja, Aikido chick Aoi, drunken master Shun and Shaolin monk Lei-Fei - who, with the possible exception of Shun, aren't nearly as fun to watch as the new characters, Mexican wrestler El Blaze and monkey-style kung-fu artist ...
We've been showing static screens of it for months now, but today we're finally able to bring you a glimpse of Virtua Fighter 5 in motion. The new trailer, just unleashed by publisher Sega, is the best look we've had of the martial-arts fighter so far (aside from the Japanese arcade machine, anyway).

The new video features a very good look at new fighters El Blaze and Eileen, as well as plenty of smooth new ass-kickery by old favorites including Akira, Jacky, Lau and Pai. The game - due out in ...
We've got a batch of new shots of Sega's forthcoming PlayStation 3 beat-'em-up Virtua Fighter 5, and they feature the shiniest-looking characters since Perfect Dark Zero. Just look at Akira's arms in the pics below - he looks like a polished toy.

After announcing that Virtua Fighter 5 will be a PS3 exclusive when it ships next year, Sega let the crowds at E3 get a preview with the arcade version of its martial-arts powerhouse.

The characters look incredibly smooth and well-animated, with one move leading seamlessly into the next. But while they're better-looking than ever, they're mostly the same ...
Monday 8 May 2006
Sega has revealed that the much-loved Virtua Fighter series will return for a fifth time in 2007, but now as an exclusive PS3 title.

Named Virtua Fighter 5, the game will feature 17 playable polygon-built warriors including two new characters. El Blaze is a Mexican fighting champion who relies on the speed of his lucha libre fighting style to take down his foes, while martial arts expert Eileen prefers her monkey kung fu technique taught by her dear old granddad.
