Australians still haven't been told exactly when in March the PlayStation 3 is set to launch, but at least local gamers are beginning to get a firm idea of exactly what games can be expected. Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has now confirmed five of its titles will be there from the PS3's first day of sale, bringing the expected number of launch games to 17.

In a statement, SCEA confirmed Formula One Championship Edition, MotorStorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Resistance: Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7 would all be PS3 launch titles in Australia. No further details--such as a more specific launch date for the new console--were mentioned.

The Sony games join an expanding list of expected launch titles from other publishers, including Virtua Fighter 5 from Sega and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 from Ubisoft. The current list of Australian PS3 launch titles--gathered from each publisher's latest release schedules--is provided below.

A supposed box images suggests a big update for Sega's prized fighter.

One of the big selling points for the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of Virtua Tennis is its support for 1080p resolution -- a huge update over the arcade version's 720p. So the big question was, would Virtua Fighter 5 get the same treatment?

The answer was presumably no, until an image of the back of the Japanese version's box appeared on Japanese fan sites today. Shown below, the supposed box image indicates that VF5 will join the small list of early PS3 titles to support "true HD."

Sega has announced that Virtua Fighter 5 will be published on the PlayStation 3 as a launch title in March ahead of an Xbox 360 release in late Winter.

Virtua Fighter 5 features stages from around the world where players face off in fast-moving martial arts battles against one of 17 characters. Two new characters join the elite group of fighters, adding unique fighting styles for players to try and master.

Tecmo's Dead or Alive series is about to get some serious competition for the king of fighters' throne on Xbox 360 in the form of Virtua Fighter 5, previously a PS3 only title.

Hopefully, the fact that VF is spreading out on multiple platforms will give the DOA series a much needed kick up the arse. But Sega's legendary beat 'em up franchise has taken a few knocks of its own over the last few years. Maybe it's just that the genre as a whole has gone as far as it can?

When a company announces a release date of Spring, you normally imagine something like March, or maybe May at the latest. But in the case of Virtua Fighter 5, Spring has ended up meaning February 8. Not that we should complain--nothing will warm up our cold winter rooms more than a few hours of Virtua Fighter 5 on the PS3. The game will retail for 8190 yen ($70), slightly more expensive than the two Virtua Fighter 4 games which sold for 7140 yen each on the PS2. Preorders of the game will come with Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary Reprint. This is the disc that originally came with Enterbrain's Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary book back in 2003, and is a version of the original Virtua Fighter game, using the system from Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution.

Following the release of Virtua Fighter 5, Sega will release a joystick for PS3, Virtua Stick High Grade, on February 15 for 7329 yen ($63). The stick features lever and buttons of arcade build quality and connects to the PS3 via USB cable.

If all this applies to you, you could play a starring role in the PlayStation 3 version of Virtua Fighter 5. Sega has started seeking VF5 arcade player data for use in the upcoming home version. Those players who are selected will have their character, with all equipped items, appear in the game, along with ring name, introductory text, battle record and level.
