Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) held its annual press conference today at the E3 Media & Business Summit, making a series of announcements that demonstrated the strength and innovation of the PlayStation® family of products.

PlayStation fans will have further reason to get excited about growing their game libraries as Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and industry veterans Epic Games announced a multi-stage agreement.

As a result of the agreement, Midway and Epic Games will make the platform debut of Unreal Tournament 3 exclusively on PS3 this fall.

"The raw power of PS3 and Unreal Engine 3 allow us to provide gamers the full Unreal Tournament 3 first-person shooter experience normally found only on a PC," said Mark Rein, Vice President, Epic Games. "The PS3 is the ideal platform for us to deliver stunning visuals and awesome gameplay.

Also, releasing this fall, legendary PlayStation development team Free Radical Design and leading publisher Ubisoft have teamed up to deliver the mind-altering, technologically superior game HAZE exclusively for PS3 this holiday season.

Beyond Unreal cracked open the most recent issue of OXM and discovered that Unreal Tournament 3 will ship with a good 3-4 dozen multiplayer maps.

Aside from the gameplay shown in the video, it offered a few details about the game. It was said that the original idea was to make gigantic maps utilizing UE3's streaming technology for up to 64 players at once. They decided that it didn't feel like a UT game and went back to improving the original formula. Each map starts out as a basic BSP layout and is play tested until they think it is fun and then it is handed over to have static meshes and the rest of the artistic assets created. There will be 3 to 4 dozen multiplayer maps in the retail version of the game. The single player portion will have even more maps than multiplayer.

The rumored difficulty in designing games for the Playstation 3 leads us to believe that adjusting things in Unreal Tournament 3 for the more facile 360 should be a piece of cake for the UE3 brainiacs. Although words on the street can be wrong, Teamxbox are going to go with the "word" for now that Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 will mirror Unreal Tournament 3 for the Xbox 360.

With that said, and with the lack of a playable Unreal Tournament 3 for the Xbox 360 floating about, Teamxbox took the time to visit our competition's booth at GDC. Kotaku got their hands on Unreal Tournament 3 for the PLAYSTATION 3 this week at GDC, surprisingly enough, but only got to spend a few minutes with the demo before the expo hall shut down. The version of UT3 running on the show floor still had some work to be done, but it will still quite lovely to look at. Everything was all super-polygony and pretty-lighted and sexy-textured, showing off the Unreal Engine 3 goods and the PS3's poly-pushing prowess. The good news, as you've probably figured out by the title of this post, is that you can choose the stock SIXAXIS controller, with tilt-look, or go PC-style with a USB keyboard and mouse. Nice!
