Elsewhere in the call following its results, Midway CEO David F. Zucker said the company has learned from the development process of Stranglehold and Unreal Tournament 3, and that the company's multiplatform releases would be more promptly synchronized going forward.

The Midway CEO concluded of the issues: "We do believe that these technical issues are now complete at a core level in our engine. Looking ahead to 2008, we expect the PS3 versions of our titles to ship day and date..." with the Xbox 360 and other SKUs.

Major publisher Midway Games has announced that, for the three-month period ending September 30, 2007, its sales totaled $36.7 million, up from $27.4 million last year. At the same time, however, the company reported losses of $33.5 million, increased from $22.5 million in 2006.

As for highlights, the company said that Xbox 360 and PC title Stranglehold has exceeded 1 million units shipped worldwide across all platforms, and the company anticipates shipping Stranglehold for the PS3 in Europe in the latter part of November.

Midway also highlighted its recent demo of Unreal Tournament 3 in conjunction with developer Epic Games, since a demo of Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC was recently released, and has remained one of the top 2 most downloaded games on FilePlanet.com since it was released on October 12th. Epic Games' Mark Rein says it's "too early to know" whether Unreal Tournament 3 will hit PS3 this year.

Rein was speaking to Eurogamer via email in light of Australian distribution reports that the PC version is set for mid-November but won't be joined by its console sibling until 2008.

Midway yesterday confirmed that the PC version is down for release in mid-November, although it couldn't be completely specific about the release date.

The publisher recently advised investors that the highly anticipated first-person shooter might miss the pre-Christmas release window and slip to 2008, with Rein later adding that the company had felt obliged to alert investors to the possibility despite a reasonable probability of getting it done this year.

Responding to a reported quote from Epic president Mike Capps that Unreal Tournament 3 was "just on PS3," VP Mark Rein has reaffirmed to CVG that the deathmatch shooter is still coming to Xbox 360 next year.

"We are going to release UT3 on Xbox 360 in 2008," confirmed Rein.

Regarding the game's performance, Rein explained, "I would think most of the people who read CVG would actually be able to get a great experience with Unreal Tournament III. We spent a considerable amount of time and effort making sure that gamers will be able to enjoy UTIII even with older gaming rigs," he added.

During a press event today at Epic's offices in Cary, North Carolina, Epic VP Mark Rein confirmed that they have no plans to offer a PS3 demo of the game. The reason is that Epic is concentrating on finishing the full PS3 version of the game, which like all PS3 games requires a certification from Sony before going gold. Since demos for the PS3 also require a certification from Sony, Rein told FS that it would take too much time from finishing the full game to also create a demo that would also need Sony's stamp of approval.

CVG reports: In the latest round of release date confusion surrounding Epic's Unreal Tournament III, Midway has said the PS3 version has now slipped to early 2008 - but the developer's informing a Christmas 2007 release could still happen.

Midway has announced a Q1 2008 release for UT III on PS3 in a financial report, but in response Epic's Mark Rein stated that as a public company the publisher felt an obligation to its shareholders to let them know about the possibility of a delay.

"Our goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007", Rein said in a post on Epic forums, but added, "However, we will only ship it once it's ready and is the best game we can deliver."
Rein went on to explain that UT III on PS3 will now feature the same map set as the PC version. Previously, the console version was to have fewer levels.

Speaking further, he said that PC UT III is "still on track for November", and that there'll be a demo released before the full game ships.

An Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III is expected some time in 2008.

Not long after Midway announced Unreal Tournament 3 would be moving out of the 2007 release timeframe on the PlayStation 3, Midway CEO David Zucker held a conference call to address how this would affect their financial situation through the rest of the year.

Zucker was very specific about the company's roadblocks on the PS3 platform, citing "technical issues with the Unreal Engine 3.0" with finishing work on the PS3 versions of Stranglehold and Area 51: Blacksite. Consequently, Area 51: Blacksite will be arriving three weeks after the Xbox 360 and PC versions drop at the end of October, while Stranglehold remains an unspecified fourth quarter release.

Midway says the technical issues on the PS3 have been ironed out, however, and following the release of Unreal Tournament 3 in early 2008, they expect the PS3 versions to arrive date and date with Xbox 360 and PC SKUs going forward.

IGN Entertainment's latest GamerMetrics report that among the nearly 15,000 gamers surveyed, the Xbox 360 version of Midway's Unreal Tournament III (UT3) has emerged with the strongest affinity to fans of Halo 3.

Based on the survey result, the report speculates that if the Xbox 360 version of UT3 had launched in November at the same time with its PS3 and PC versions, it might have been buried under an avalanche of Halo hype. But releasing it next year ensures that it will reach Halo 3 fans at a time when they might become more receptive. Much ado has been made about the potential presence of cross-platform play in Epic Games' upcoming multiplayer-heavy shooter Unreal Tournament 3 (PC, PS3, X360). The most likely compatible platforms have been PC and PlayStation 3, as the Xbox 360 version has taken a development backseat and the PS3's approach to network architecture is more conducive to the kind of freedom Epic would want for such a service. PS3, unlike Xbox 360, also supports mouse and keyboard controls, which would allow for a more potentially level playing field between users of the two platforms.
