IndustryGamers: As we continue our look into the top selling games of 2009, we're examining what made THQ's UFC 2009 Undisputed such a success for the publisher. We recently spoke with EEDAR executive chairman Greg Short, who presented his new findings at Ayzenberg Group's [a]list Summit this past week.

THQ has already shipped more than 2.9 million copies of the game worldwide, with over 1.5 million copies of UFC sold in the U.S., according to NPD. Similar to Capcom's Resident Evil 5 launch earlier this year, marketing clearly played a big role in the success of UFC, but that wasn't the only factor. Short explained that UFC's rise in popularity as a sport and the fact that a game hasn't been made in years made consumers very eager for the title.

Neven Dravinski, UFC Producer: "The Patch for UFC 2009 Undisputed has been released on the Xbox 360 World Wide and the PS3 for Europe. The Patch is currently in submission with Sony America and we expect to release it very soon. As the Xbox and Sony Europe updates were available sooner than expected we made the decision to get the Patch out to the public rather than sit on them. Stay on the lookout for updates regarding the Patch release for Sony America."

UFC 2009 is an incredible game but all great games aren't perfect. There were issues with the online when UFC launched and some auto save problems with the PS3 version of the game. THQ understands that these problems needed to be attended too and the upcoming patch will answer the call.

Gamasutra writes: "The major THQ release UFC 2009: Undisputed is off to a strong start -- great news for the publisher, which just recently had to lay off 600 workers.

The licensed mixed martial arts fighting game has shipped approximately 2 million units since its launch on May 19, THQ told investors and analysts this week. Analyst Colin Sebastian with Lazard Capital Markets said the game's performance at retail is an important victory for the publisher."

Havok Cloth Debuts In UFC 2009: Undisputed (News)

Intel-owned middleware and tools company Havok said that its fast-selling Cloth technology has made its debut in THQ's recently-released fighting game, UFC 2009: Undisputed.

Cloth is the latest product from Havok, which is widely known in the games industry for its physics and animation offerings. Havok technology can be found in over 200 games, including Halo 3, MotorStorm and BioShock, among many others.

THQ renewed its licensing agreement with Havok last year, allowing THQ to use Havok technology in upcoming games including Darksiders: Wrath of War and Red Faction: Guerrilla, as well as past titles such as Saints Row 2, de Blob and Company of Heroes.

Below are the divisions that have the fighters ranked from best to worst in terms of overall stats. Take notice that there are only two Judo fighters (Karo Parisyan and Kazuhiro Nakamura) on the entire roster.

Rampage Jackson loves "playing with himself" on UFC 2009 Undisputed (News)

UFC's Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is rather pleased with his character model in UFC 2009 Undisputed, except for a minor detail.

"That fat-ass jaw," he said, playing as himself at THQ's headquarters. "I look like a black-ass chipmunk."

His character was facing off against a virtual Chuck Liddell, at THQ headquarters, in a recreation of their classic UFC 71 bout, where Rampage claimed the UFC light-heavyweight title.

One thing Rampage is pleased with is how "ripped" and "sexy" his character looks. "I'm going to play with myself all the time, now," he said.

Rampage was hardly complementary about Liddell's character build...

Georges St-Pierre, Ultimate Fighting's top welterweight, trapped his foe in a "ground-and-pound" in his last win, pummeling the opponent with blows to the head.

THQ Inc., the money-losing video-game publisher, is counting on St-Pierre and the Ultimate Fighting Championship to help it get off the mat when the company releases the $59.99 "UFC 2009 Undisputed" on May 19.

Sales at Agoura Hills, California-based THQ are in freefall after topping $1 billion two years ago. Fighting games including "WWE SmackDown" and children's titles from Walt Disney Co.'s Pixar movies don't provide the punch they once did. The shortfall has forced THQ to close studios and cut jobs. The company reported its fifth-straight quarterly loss today.

THQ's upcoming game based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship should see a demo hit XBL and PSN next week, a blog post on MMAJunkie.com indicates.

A tournament was held for a group of UK fighters to see who was the best at the new game, with UFC favourite and current team coach on the latest series of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality TV show dominating his opponents with headkicks, before being smashed by one himself by winner Nick Osipczak, who was playing as Rashad Evans - the manresponsible for Bisping's only real-life loss. I bet that made it hurt a whole lot more.

IGN is proud to officially announce Sugar Rashad Evans will be featured as a playable character in THQ's upcoming MMA title, UFC 2009 Undisputed.

"I think it's an honor," Evans said of his inclusion in the upcoming title. "I never thought I'd be in a videogame, and I'm happy about that. Edge writes: "The mixed martial arts world was shaken up this week when UFC president Dana White ejected former welterweight title challenger Jon Fitch and other UFC fighters from the organization, reportedly for refusing to sign a deal related to THQ's upcoming UFC 2009 Undisputed videogame.

But after one day, Fitch and fellow fighters Christian Wellisch, Josh Koscheck and Cain Velasquez all agreed to sign the deal and were reinstated.

Fitch gave Edge more background on the situation in a phone interview Friday: "Mostly, it didn't really have anything to do with the game, it was more or less the way that Dana brought [the contract] to us. It was a respect thing. He talked down to us as fighters despite the work we've done for them.'"

THQ and Yuke's, most famous for their wrestling game collaborations, are bringing the fight to your house with UFC 2009 Undisputed. The game will be on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and some of the UFC's greatest got their hands on the game at a recent press junket.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson told reporters he wants to "praise God" for being in a game. Apparently he's not kidding, as his trainer said Jackson is gaming whenever he isn't training. He blew quickly through Grand Theft Auto IV with a pretty high completion rating from what we hear. Jackson said a college roommate estimates the UFC star spent 14 hours a day gaming.
