IndustryGamers: As we continue our look into the top selling games of 2009, we're examining what made THQ's UFC 2009 Undisputed such a success for the publisher. We recently spoke with EEDAR executive chairman Greg Short, who presented his new findings at Ayzenberg Group's [a]list Summit this past week.

THQ has already shipped more than 2.9 million copies of the game worldwide, with over 1.5 million copies of UFC sold in the U.S., according to NPD. Similar to Capcom's Resident Evil 5 launch earlier this year, marketing clearly played a big role in the success of UFC, but that wasn't the only factor. Short explained that UFC's rise in popularity as a sport and the fact that a game hasn't been made in years made consumers very eager for the title.

Neven Dravinski, UFC Producer: "The Patch for UFC 2009 Undisputed has been released on the Xbox 360 World Wide and the PS3 for Europe. The Patch is currently in submission with Sony America and we expect to release it very soon. As the Xbox and Sony Europe updates were available sooner than expected we made the decision to get the Patch out to the public rather than sit on them. Gamasutra writes: "The major THQ release UFC 2009: Undisputed is off to a strong start -- great news for the publisher, which just recently had to lay off 600 workers.

The licensed mixed martial arts fighting game has shipped approximately 2 million units since its launch on May 19, THQ told investors and analysts this week. Analyst Colin Sebastian with Lazard Capital Markets said the game's performance at retail is an important victory for the publisher."

Intel-owned middleware and tools company Havok said that its fast-selling Cloth technology has made its debut in THQ's recently-released fighting game, UFC 2009: Undisputed.

Cloth is the latest product from Havok, which is widely known in the games industry for its physics and animation offerings. Havok technology can be found in over 200 games, including Halo 3, MotorStorm and BioShock, among many others.

THQ renewed its licensing agreement with Havok last year, allowing THQ to use Havok technology in upcoming games including Darksiders: Wrath of War and Red Faction: Guerrilla, as well as past titles such as Saints Row 2, de Blob and Company of Heroes.

UFC's Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is rather pleased with his character model in UFC 2009 Undisputed, except for a minor detail.

"That fat-ass jaw," he said, playing as himself at THQ's headquarters. "I look like a black-ass chipmunk."

His character was facing off against a virtual Chuck Liddell, at THQ headquarters, in a recreation of their classic UFC 71 bout, where Rampage claimed the UFC light-heavyweight title.

One thing Rampage is pleased with is how "ripped" and "sexy" his character looks. "I'm going to play with myself all the time, now," he said.
