Making the skating more accessible are Spot challenges - at-a-glance splashes of graffiti that let you know where to grind, handplant or take off to beat other skaters' scores on the fly. Other challenges see you following video cameramen around as you bust tricks on film or trying to impress spectators with your smooth board slickery.
It's all designed to show what's possible, but the notable thing is that lines aren't so predefined any more - all the early environments are more open than THUG's rigid route-plotting. Which is good, because you'll be spending a long time idly rolling around - with the buses from American Wasteland ditched, skating's the only way to traverse the terrain, though the usual challenge-restart option stops things from getting irritating.
