Tony Hawk Ride: Are YOU going to like it?

Find out if the new Hawk game is going to be your bag of tricks

We had a lengthy, several hours session with Tony Hawk Ride the other day. We came to the conclusion that Tony Hawk Ride isn't like other Tony Hawk games. It's still all about skateboarding, but it's most definitely a *very* different prospect for the veteran franchise.

If you've not been keeping up, have a looky at the video below. Yes, it's a promo, but having played the game we can say that it's pretty spot on in its appraisal.

Things have been radically overhauled to accommodate the fancy skateboard-without-wheels controller. The series' most fundamental parts have been significantly fiddled with. Because of all the changes, it's no longer so easy to say who, exactly, is going to like the latest Tony Hawk. Just being into skateboarding games isn't enough. So, are YOU going to like Tony Hawk Ride?

You WILL like Tony Hawk Ride if... you've ever secretly wished you could skate, but were too rubbish and/or scared of falling off and hurting your face

Tony Hawk Ride does a fantastic job of creating a sense of actually being a skilled skateboarder. Straight up. Watching the on-screen skater convert your physical exertions on the board into stylish moves is a most satisfying illusion.

Zone in completely and it's easy to forget that you're actually a clumsy, uncoordinated man attempting to manipulate a wheel-less lump of gizmo-enhanced plastic and not, in fact, a fearless urban warrior expertly taming his plywood board stead.

You WON'T like Tony Hawk Ride if... you're expecting the traditional twitch button mega-combo madness

Obvious, really, because there are no buttons to press. But it's important to emphasise that the game has been built entirely with the board controller in mind. And because it simply takes much longer to do things with your feet on a board than with your fingers on a handheld controller, the levels have been designed accordingly. This translates to the skating being less about never-ending chains of flashy moves, and more about moderate runs that are, if anything, at least a little more faithful to the true disciplines of skateboarding.

You WILL like Tony Hawk Ride if... you're into gaming that makes you sweaty

Playing Tony Hawk Ride will get you hot and it will make you sweat. It takes a lot of very real, very physical effort. It may not be as strenuous as a bonafide workout game, but it demands a shit-load more work than any other Tony Hawk title. You're on your feet. You're bending your knees. You're leaning, balancing and fighting friction as you shift the board through various angles. You're definitely NOT slouching on the sofa keeping your ass warm.

Massive waste of R&D. Skating games just do no sell like Hawks games used to(not even the excelent Skate series)so just who's going to pay up for this load of short lived peripheral gimmicky oddness?

Skaters? No, they could get a new deck, some cool trucks/wheels, whatever for their real hobby rather than a placcy board without wheels that dumbs their skill down.

Casuals and mums? I doubt it when it's over hald the price of a Wii for ONE game(I don't see the board being used in anything lese like the Wii balance board either)and there's a recession going on people!

Gamers who like skating games? A few but most of them will still think they'll look both silly and sweaty doing it and give it a wide berth in general while continuing to play Skate at a fraction of the cost of this.

Activision do LOVE to find ways of makng games dearer but, here, they shot themselves right in the foot as the price is DAFT. Plus it doesn't even look as good onscreen as Skate when done well.

Big fail coming imo.

After what Neversoft did to both the THPS and GH series, I really find myself not caring about this at all. I do try to keep an open mind however, and I will admit that I at least want to try it.

@crumbdunky very true i would much rather prefer to keep my ass warm than look really stupid and sweaty.

My board and everything with it did not cost this much. I'll probably just end up playing it in HMV

It looks cool, but the thing I like about tony hawk games is the insane combos u can pull off. i like being able to jump 10 feet by olling, and doing a triple impossible no sweat. i might look into this, but not until its actually out for a while.

ehh ill just stick to the couch with my sweaty ass well now i know i wont buy the game... skating games kinda died remember when i got the second tony hawk and i thought it was like revolutionary or something then i guess skating lost its edge over the years

I'm guessing it will sell better on the Wii than on PS3 or Xbox, since peripheral-based games sell better there.

Skating for little crying babies

Theres no point in making skating this "realistic" the only reason i liked skate 2 was because i could relax after skating but still get pumped for my next sesh. This is also wayyyy to expensive. The max i shell out for a REAL board is about $110ish which i what i would much rather have.

Yes, shit.

People don't want to get off their ass to play a game, they want to sit back and do things they couldn't do in real life. If its going to be this realistic you may as well go outside and skateboard for REAL and make REAL life experiences, this games just a huge waste of money.

Actually, I'm down for this game. Although its not like relaxing on a couch after a long tiring day, i think this will be fun. Plus, people, it doesn't hurt to do a little exercise. Dang you guys are lazy!
