Not only is Tomb Raider Underworld being welcomed into the Xbox 360 Classics and PlayStation 3 Platinum ranges, the game is finally getting a trophy update for the PS3.

Firstly, Eidos today announced that as of today Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider: Underworld would become a part of the Xbox 360's Classics range and the PS3's Platinum Hits range.

This means that the game will be priced at a knock-down RRP £19.99 - though you might have found it online cheaper than that anyway. Maybe you'll find it even cheaper after the price cut.

Tokyo-based Square Enix just completed its full acquisition of U.K. game maker Eidos this week, and has now revealed the latest sales figures in its arsenal of multi-million-selling titles.

Dragon Quest, which will see its ninth numbered sequel this year in Japan, has so far sold 47 million units. The great majority of these sales have been in Japan -- many entries in the series were in North America. The first Dragon Quest game to be released in Europe was Dragon Quest VIII in 2006.

Disney crossover franchise Kingdom Hearts, which so far comprises only two numbered games and one spin-off, has sold 12 million units. Two new portable spin-offs, for the Nintendo DS and PSP, are expected this year.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. The alternate ending is quite a bit more spicy than the original, and it seems to be a bit out of character for Ms. Croft. The original and alternate endings are embedded past the break."
Turns out despite the huge brand name and near universal critical acclaim, Tomb Raider Underworld just didn't sell as well as they had predicted, so it's time to tap that lucrative family market.

But Eidos don't need to spend thousands on a marketing consultant - we've done all the hard work for them and drawn up new versions of Lara.

[A] anonymous, former Crystal Dynamics employee posting in the forums claims that the decision to cut the content was made specifically to use it later in DLC.

"Ask anyone who is part of it and if they are honest they will tell you around 40% of the DLC was meant to be in the game itself, originally. But it was decided later on to take out those parts because they were expecting most sales on the 360 and the DLC the way it looked at the time was looking to be a bit 'thin'. So we were asked to cut some parts out to be used in the DLC."

Lindstrom feels he has a few misconceptions to clear up; "I wasn't going to post, but there is too much being said that I don't feel is right to go unanswered."

"I absolutely wish we could have spent more time polishing Underworld," said Lindstrom. "I take my share of responsibility of aiming so high that we had a reduced ability to spend time on polish."

Edge writes: "Eidos is suggesting that the modern videogame icon Lara Croft may undergo a 'family friendly' redesign.

The publisher's suggestions have come forward as the recent release of Tomb Raider: Underworld missed sales expectations by some £20m, while developer Crystal Dynamics has been subjected to layoffs to focus the team's output to the core IP.

It is suspected that Lara's popularity – as a character – is fading particularly in the US. And, as the commercial success of all Tomb Raider games have always had a degree of dependence on Lara's image, this may prompt a fresh face for the heroine in her next title."

Crystal Dynamics owner Eidos earlier today expressed disappointment in the sales of Underworld, which has moved 1.5 million copies worldwide since its release--apparently a figure that did not meet Eidos' internal projects.

Sharecast: "Computer games maker Eidos has revised down its revenue forecasts and cautioned it may need to renegotiate bank finances after disappointing sales of its new Lara Croft game, Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Eidos, which changed its name from SCi Entertainment, now estimates full year revenue will now be in the range of £160m-£180m compared to previous guidance of £180m-£200m.

"We have passed our peak net debt position and we retain sufficient headroom within our committed banking facility but given revised profit expectations we may need to enter into discussions with our lending bank regarding our June 2009 covenants," it added."
It hasn’t even been 40 years since Computer Space became the first commercial game, and what began as little more than dandruff on a black screen is already threatening photo-, audio- and physical realism. ...

Activision has hit the jackpot with their "one CoD per year" tactic. The next Call of Duty Modern Warfare title is due to visit us in Fall 2009.

Here at PS3 Attitude Towers we are ok with that "fifalization" of the franchise, as far as they keep producing innovative quality games.

But let's see Chart Track's UK Charts for week ending 6 December 2008…

A row has erupted around reviews of the new Lara Croft video game, Tomb Raider: Underworld, after some journalists claimed they had been asked not to post reviews that gave the game a low score.

The situation first came to light on the microblogging service Twitter, after one reviewer said he had been asked by the PR company representing Eidos, the game's publisher, to hold off posting a review of the title if he gave it a mark of less than 8 out of 10.

From PS3 Attitude: "Since lists appear to be all the rage recently, I would like to put in my two cents about Tomb Raider Underworld."

Excerpts:

"When I see a trailer for Tomb Raider's story and I hear the word epic being blasted in rapid fire (3 times in 37 seconds) I listen. I listen loud and clear. This story is going to suck. Epically. Enough with the hype and the marketing jargon. If the game is any good we will do that for you. Perhaps they are in (epic) damage control already. If they realized that this latest (epic) game has really nothing (epic) to bring to the table, at least they can hype the (epic) crap out of it.

Epic."

"Another "revolutionary" enhancement is the ability to shoot while grabbing on to a pillar, ledge or balance beam. Thank god for the power of the PS3 to finally pull that one off."
Tomb Raider: Underworld Coming November 18th (News)

PSX Extreme Writes:

Although the series hit a speed bump or two last generation, we've seen a strong revival thanks to recent entries like Tomb Raider: Legend. Therefore, our expectations are very high for the upcoming Tomb Raider: Underworld, which now has a solidified release date.

According to News10 (ABC), Eidos has officially announced that Underworld will arrive for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, DS and PC on November 18, just in time for the holiday rush. One important note mentioned in the ABC article shouldn't go unnoticed; although Legend was indeed on the 360, it wasn't specifically designed for next-gen consoles. Underworld, however, is. And this time around, our ageless buxom friend is out to prove the existence of the mythical hammer of the Norse God, Thor. If you're a fan of mythology, you're well aware of this artifact, which is supposed to be able to smash mountains and even destroy other Gods. Clearly, a quest of this magnitude will involve multiple exotic locations and numerous baddies to test Lara's new skills, and let's not forget about those challenging puzzles.
So here it is eventually, you just need to come inside to see Eidos' new baby.

Technically speaking, the game is solid. The environments are big and very detailed, Lara's animations have gotten more natural than before - though it's still close to Lara's original style - and the graphics are just beautiful.
While submerged, the player has recourse to a spear gun and sticky grenades, which the developers have dubbed the "instant sushi maker." There are bioluminescent jellyfish stationed by the walls of the ruins that provide a light source for exploring the caverns, and also pose as a hazard that the player must navigate around. Lara can also use a flashlight, which unlike Tomb Raider Legend's has an unlimited power supply. As Lara passes through dirt-strewn passages after climbing out of the water, her face and feet will noticeably be streaked with grime."

The screens show Lara in her swimsuit, which is probably enough to keep more than a few people wanking. Take a look.

It's becoming clearer as the months pass just how big a step forward is planned for Lara Croft. Underworld has been blowing us away for months with teasing images, but this time we got an up close look at the game in action. This glimpse only reinforces the point - Lara is headed into some exciting new waters.

The level we saw begins as Lara stands in her wetsuit aboard a well-appointed yacht. Diving off, she enters into the profound blue of the Mediterranean Sea and swims downward in her scuba gear. As some dangerous sharks approach, Lara has her trusty spear gun for protection. This time around, and throughout the game, she can use non-lethal tranquilizers - not everybody was enthusiastic about the need to kill off endangered animals in earlier games.

Videogamer reports UK publisher Eidos has insisted that superb PS3 exclusive Uncharted: Drake's Fortune's critical and commercial success has not put any pressure on developer Crystal Dynamics to out-do it with the first true "next-gen" Tomb Raider game.

In forum posts across the internet some gamers have expressed concern that Tomb Raider: Underworld, due out late 2008 on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, will need to go some way to outshine its treasure-hunting rival Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and may end up suffering from being too similar to the PS3-exclusive.

In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Kathryn Clements, Tomb Raider's senior brand manager, admitted that there were similarities between the two games, but stressed that "the final Tomb Raider game will be very different to Uncharted", citing different gameplay focuses.

When asked if she had played Uncharted, Clements responded: "I have. I thought it was a good game. We've all played Uncharted at Eidos, and we all thought it was a great game, but actually having played the game, apart from the premise of the storyline and the fact that he's a treasure hunter, it's actually quite different to Tomb Raider, it's actually more focused on combat."
Let's go out on a limb here and say that Tomb Raider Underworld is likely a continuation of the abruptly chopped story of Tomb Raider Legend. Of course, when we asked the team straight off whether this was the case, they refused to comment. You see, so much of Tomb Raider Underworld is being kept under wraps (in a lead-lined bunker in a secret installation under the sea - on another planet), we're having to draw our own conclusions from the demo we were shown recently at a top ...

January 18, 2008: 06:08 AM EST

SCi Entertainment on Friday announced the immediate departure of a trio of top executives: CEO Jane Cavanagh and two divisional managing directors, Bill Ennis and Rob Murray. The move comes a week after SCi said takeover talks had ended, and that it was strapped for funding.

Phil Rogers, who joined SCi from Electronic Arts in March as chief financial officer, will become CEO.

Malcolm Dunne, the U.S. chief financial officer, will become interim CFO, but won't be appointed to the board. SCi will look both externally and internally for a permanent CFO.

SCi will conduct a business review and is in talks to find the necessary funding to survive the delay of Tomb Raider: Underworld.

The financial problems at SCi, which counts Time Warner as a major shareholder, come at a generally positive time for the overall games industry.

SCi, parent company of Eidos, has called off takeover talks and revealed it'll make a loss for the 2008 fiscal year.

The London-based firm didn't believe the company would be sold for its full value at the current time and called off talks after failing to receive a formal offer.

"The board no longer believes that a sale of the company for its full value is likely to be achieved at the current time and has reached the view that it is not in the company's or its shareholders' ...

SCi says it's spoken to "various interested parties" since officially announcing its consideration of offers -- three parties, including Time Warner and an unnamed Chinese company, were reportedly interested -- but now says it has not received a formal offer in appropriate time.

The filing also revealed that the release date of the next Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider Underworld, has been moved to the fourth quarter of 2008, and will release simultaneously on six platforms (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, DS, Wii and PS2) during the Christmas season, as opposed to the previously-planned 3 platforms (PC, PS3 and Xbox 360) in June.
The first images of the new Lara Croft adventure, Tomb Raider: Underworld, have been unearthed by TR fan site, Tomb Raider Chronicles. The images show the eternally nubile explorer engaging in some of her favourite pursuits: climbing, clambering, solving puzzles and sporting a fantastic physique in skin tight attire. You can see all of the shots in our image gallery.

It wasn't too long ago that Eidos got caught filing a trademark for 'Tomb Raider: Underworld'. Now the first magazine has gone to press revealing what we can expect from the (hopefully) true next-gen Lara.

To get the obvious out of the way first, the game will be developed by Crystal Dynamics and released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2008. Events will also take place after Legend and new animations have been created for gaming's first lady.

Eidos has signed an exclusive deal with with a U.S. based Xbox 360 print magazine to unveil Tomb Raider Underworld at the end of December. An online PR campaign will mobilise in January 2008, with Tomb Raider Chronicles launching a microsite, preview and fact sheet for Underworld.

The game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and will release in 2008 for PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows. The story centres on the Mayan calendar and the brief time frame where portals between the mortal realm and the Underworld dissolve.
