BioShock and Oblivion are two of the most innovative first person games released this generation, combined winning some odd 80+ Game of the Year awards. So when a press release went out earlier today revealing a software bundle containing the two, a lot of people's interests were piqued. However, the bundle will not be making it's way to the PS3. Curious, PS3Center contacted Bethesda to find out why.
Street Fighter IV hype was asploding across the webs (GamesRadar included) and we felt there was no better time to excuse a barrage of boney bastards across the site.

Then we thought, “why stop with Street Fighter?” There’ve got to be a billion goddam skeletons creeping through virtual graveyards just begging to have their toothy visage slapped on the immortal internet.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent roundtable interview in London, Bethesda Softworks vice president Pete Hines has confidently declared that Fallout 3 is a better game than the highly praised The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Asked directly if he felt the review scores for Fallout 3 will beat those of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Hines wasn't to be drawn on Fallout 3's review scores, but did express his confidence in the game.

"I don't have any doubts that on the whole, and I think this is a belief universally shared on the team that Fallout is a better game," said Hines. "But we're also not oblivious to the fact that we have a lot of extra baggage that we're carrying, being the guys picking up this franchise, that are re-imagining this series from 10 years ago, and there's something that comes along with that. We're very well aware of what we're up against."

He added: "I have no doubts in my mind that, at its core and for everything that it provides that Fallout is a better game than Oblivion was. For sure."

Fallout 3 is more than just a sequel to one of the most beloved PC RPG series ever - it's also a spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, probably the single most ginormous game of the current console generation. Created by Bethesda, the same developer behind that sprawling fantasy epic, Fallout 3 has some pretty huge shoes to fill - but judging by what we've seen so far, it took one look, scoffed and is currently at work on an ...

MTV Multiplayer Blog writes: "It's only been this generation that downloadable content has become a viable opportunity on consoles, and the Entertainment Software Ratings Board finds itself in a position to regulate this uncharted territory of content.

"The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" expansion packs and the upcoming "Grand Theft Auto IV" upcoming add-ons represent the industry's most expansive departures from a game's original content. The catch: that content must remain consistent with the original rating branded by the ESRB.

New content cannot introduce elements that would alter the original rating, or the overall rating must change. ESRB president Patricia Vance explained what this meant for content makers at a MI6 Conference panel on marketing and user generated content last week."
You havent got to be a genius to know that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was one of the biggest games on Xbox 360 when it was launched last year. Since then the RPG extraordinaire has been released on the PS3 in a graphically enhanced form to similarly rapturous reviews (to read ours click here ).

Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles is to release as a digital download for PS3.

According to Bethesda, the expansion will be available on PSN as of November 29, although it's not yet confirmed how much it'll cost. It also appears that initially the download will only be available in North American, where Shivering Isles has just shipped on disc.

The expansion features 30-plus hours of new adventuring, new quests, monsters and expanded freeform gameplay.

Presumably Shivering Isles hitting PSN will pave the way for further DLC for Oblivion on PS3.
There's more chatter over a possible Elder Scrolls MMO this morning, as crafty internet dwellers have discovered Bethesda's registration of elderscrollsonline.com.

The website is currently a dead end and Bethesda's Pete Hines says it's just nabbing URLs to prevent squatters getting there first.

Supporting the speculation is Bethesda parent ZeniMax's recent commitment to MMO development. Last week the company said it will be using funds from Providence Equity Partners for "future ...

From the Bethesda Blog:

"Two weeks ago, Pete discussed that that we've been working hard to bring Shivering Isles to the PS3 either by way of PSN or a standalone disc. Well today we've got some good news. To make the game accessible to everyone, we've officially announced that we're releasing the game as a standalone disc. Just as with the Xbox 360 version, you'll still be required to already have a full version of Oblivion to play Shivering Isles.

Shivering Isles is scheduled to ship in the North America on November 20th for $29.99."

On top of all that is the obvious joy of owning an enormous fantasy property, with sprawling dining halls, wine cellars, barracks, training rooms, even an ancient Dwemer Forge that increases your Armorer skill - much like the Alchemy table in Frostcrag Spire. Beat that, Grand Designs.

Bethesda Softworks sent over a note announced they will release their last downloadable content extra for 2006's fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The download, titled Fighter's Stronghold, will launch on Oct. 15 for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions and for the first week will be free to download.

On the Bethsoft blog site, PR head Pete Hines talks about the possible way they will bring the downloadable content to the PS3 version:

"Since we're talking about DLC, I thought I'd update you with what's going on with the PS3 version of Oblivion. We are close, very close to working something out to bring Shivering Isles to PS3 owners. That may be in downloadable form via PSN, or as a standalone retail disc, or both. I can't say definitively yet that it will happen, and I definitely can't say when. But it's looking good, and hopefully we'll have good news soon."
The edition, which will release for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, contains the original game, first full expansion Shivering Isles and download content Knights of the Nine.

Folks over at the NeoGAF Forums have probably inquired if Bethesda is intending to deliver the sole expansion pack to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PlayStation 3 this year and received a PR-ish reply that Shivering Isles is still coming to Sony's next-gen console.

Although they did specify the window of release (anywhere between today and December 31), they weren't keen on revealing when exactly it would come out in 2007. As to anything regarding unique content, downloadable content, or how the expansion pack will be distributed, they were mum about it.

Now while inthezone, a member of the NeoGAF Forums, was happy to share the email reply with other RPG fans on the PS3, the news did spark concern regarding Sony's superior line up of title releases this fall. Many of the titles are big and very highly anticipated and fans of the game fear that the expansion pack would probably be forgotten by then.

Will Bethesda get another repeat of angry mobs at the gates? Unless they do share their information soon, just as the promise in the email, they just might. Here's to hoping they reveal more soon, folks!

Due to shipping restraints, this competition will only be available to UK-based readers. However, don't feel left out as our next competition will feature worldwide prize distribution.

To enter, you must write a short blurb about what you like in the Oblivion franchise, in less than 200 words. Entries should be sent to seb.hayes [@] psu.com

The three winning entries will be selected based on what we feel were the best responses. The competition is ending on May 16th, so get your entries in as soon as possible. The prizes will be dispatched shortly after that date.

The cola wars used to provide the best example we had of a functioning free market. Whether you bled red for Coca-Cola or were true red, white and blue for Pepsi, most people had a preference and no one really could argue that they were all that different. It was a perfect competition.

These days, the battle for taste rages between Sony and Microsoft, between PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. "
Friday 27 April 2007
A lunchtime perusal of the shelves in our local Game store revealed that one of today's biggest releases, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on PS3, was mysteriously missing from display. Spotting our perplexed faces a helpful keeper of the till informed us that none of Game's high street shops had copies of Oblivion to sell, although we would be able to purchase it from their online store (although we checked and its currently listed as 'out of stock').

The game seemed ...
Some hefty words of bravoda right there, but it looks like they are backing up there words so-far according to Heiko who got some hand on time with the PC version. Not only did he witness green hills, dense forests, swampland, picture-beautiful beaches, white glaciers, detailed vegetation with high draw distance, detailed animations using Motion Capturing and impressive weather and night and day cycles.
It's still fantastic. We didn't think it would be, but it is. Despite the fact that we played the PC and 360 versions over a year ago - for nearly 200 hours and counting, incidentally - and despite the fact that we should be completely fed up with this game by now, the PS3 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has sucked us in all over again. But that's okay, because after massive fantasy role-player, pretty much every non-MMO game on the planet seems small, hollow, and a little bit ...
Next Generation is reporting that Bethesda - creators of the life-consuming uber-RPG Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - is having difficulty with Sonys online service. Seems that Bethesda wants to support downloadble ...

The PlayStation 3 version of Oblivion is due for release next month, but the company has no finalized plans for online components. Spokesperson Pete Hines told trade weekly MCV, "We plan to support downloadable content on PS3, but we couldn't tell you how or when it will be out, because it's not clear how we're going to do that yet."

He added, "You cold point to any number of factors for why that is. Although it's impossible to say which is the better between [Xbox Live and PS3 Online], Xbox Live is easier to implement because we've had a much better sense of it at an earlier stage than with PS3."

The answer is no, not really, Pete explained his opinion that they couldn't do an Elder Scrolls MMO "unless it was with some fresh idea that no one has ever tried before." This isn't an unqualified "no," though. "Certainly, there's a chance, it's something we've talked about, but it's not anywhere in our immediate future." The key is to come up with that "something new" that will work in an MMO environment, and as it stands with Oblivion on the one hand, and World of Warcraft on the other, it just won't work.

Peter Hines of Bethesda has stated that in Oblivion, SIXAXIS is not neccessary and personally he would've rather seen rumble implimented into the controller.

quote:

IGN: Did you ever think about including SIXAXIS motion support?

Pete Hines: We didn't think about doing anything with the SIXAXIS stuff. We just wanted to make sure it played well and doing something new with the SIXAXIS just wasn't even necessary. Obviously if we ever have a game that would work well with the SIXAXIS then we would consider using it¿ but that wasn't an option for Oblivion.

IGN: What do you think about SIXAXIS?

Pete Hines: I think that its value depends upon the game. It didn't make sense on Oblivion but I'm sure there are some games it does make sense on. To be honest I would rather have the rumble instead of the SIXAXIS motion stuff.
First-person sword-and-sorcery fave The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which landed on more than a few best-of-2006 lists (see our own Platinum Chalice Awards) is coming to the PS3 this March. Sure, cynics will scoff that 360 owners have already been playing Oblivion for a year. But for Sony loyalists starving for triple-A titles, the cities and wilds of Tamriel offer an unprecedented chance to spend quality time with their $600 investment.

Content-wise, everything in the PS3 release is identical ...

Oblivion will make extensive use of the PS3's hard drive by caching multiple gigabytes of data, which helps with load times. Bethesda's Pete Hines has commented that recent reports of data duplication on the PS3 Oblivion disc have been exaggerated, and this technique isn't different from the similar strategy that was employed in the creation of the Xbox 360 game last year. Lastly, it's unclear if or when the PS3 will see the Shivering Isles content that's on the way to the PC and Xbox, though with a burgeoning PlayStation Network and plenty of unfilled hard drive space, it's not hard to imagine the expansion can be made available to PS3 owners somewhere down the road.
Set to be revealed in an upcoming issue of the US Official PlayStation Magazine (not to be confused with our sister-mag, PSM ), a recent podcast may have let the proverbial cat out of the enchanted Daedra-hide bag - but ...
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could be on its way to PlayStation 3 and PSP in November, according to murmurings that started on an internet forum.
