Bethesda: 'Fallout is a better game than Oblivion' (News)

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent roundtable interview in London, Bethesda Softworks vice president Pete Hines has confidently declared that Fallout 3 is a better game than the highly praised The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Asked directly if he felt the review scores for Fallout 3 will beat those of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Hines wasn't to be drawn on Fallout 3's review scores, but did express his confidence in the game.

"I don't have any doubts that on the whole, and I think this is a belief universally shared on the team that Fallout is a better game," said Hines. "But we're also not oblivious to the fact that we have a lot of extra baggage that we're carrying, being the guys picking up this franchise, that are re-imagining this series from 10 years ago, and there's something that comes along with that. We're very well aware of what we're up against."

He added: "I have no doubts in my mind that, at its core and for everything that it provides that Fallout is a better game than Oblivion was. For sure."

MTV Multiplayer Blog writes: "It's only been this generation that downloadable content has become a viable opportunity on consoles, and the Entertainment Software Ratings Board finds itself in a position to regulate this uncharted territory of content.

"The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" expansion packs and the upcoming "Grand Theft Auto IV" upcoming add-ons represent the industry's most expansive departures from a game's original content. The catch: that content must remain consistent with the original rating branded by the ESRB.

New content cannot introduce elements that would alter the original rating, or the overall rating must change. ESRB president Patricia Vance explained what this meant for content makers at a MI6 Conference panel on marketing and user generated content last week."

A group of 12 editorial staff from Enterbrain (the folks that put out Famitsu in all it's various iterations) sat down and voted on the game they felt was the best title of the year in Japan without regard for sales figures, fame of the franchise, etc. Only one vote per person, game with the most votes wins. In the end, Oblivion took home the honor as the best game of 2007 with 5 votes. The tally was:

Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles is to release as a digital download for PS3.

According to Bethesda, the expansion will be available on PSN as of November 29, although it's not yet confirmed how much it'll cost. It also appears that initially the download will only be available in North American, where Shivering Isles has just shipped on disc.

The expansion features 30-plus hours of new adventuring, new quests, monsters and expanded freeform gameplay.

Presumably Shivering Isles hitting PSN will pave the way for further DLC for Oblivion on PS3.

"Two weeks ago, Pete discussed that that we've been working hard to bring Shivering Isles to the PS3 either by way of PSN or a standalone disc. Well today we've got some good news. To make the game accessible to everyone, we've officially announced that we're releasing the game as a standalone disc. Just as with the Xbox 360 version, you'll still be required to already have a full version of Oblivion to play Shivering Isles.

Bethesda Softworks sent over a note announced they will release their last downloadable content extra for 2006's fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The download, titled Fighter's Stronghold, will launch on Oct. 15 for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions and for the first week will be free to download.

On the Bethsoft blog site, PR head Pete Hines talks about the possible way they will bring the downloadable content to the PS3 version:

"Since we're talking about DLC, I thought I'd update you with what's going on with the PS3 version of Oblivion. We are close, very close to working something out to bring Shivering Isles to PS3 owners. That may be in downloadable form via PSN, or as a standalone retail disc, or both. I can't say definitively yet that it will happen, and I definitely can't say when. But it's looking good, and hopefully we'll have good news soon."

Folks over at the NeoGAF Forums have probably inquired if Bethesda is intending to deliver the sole expansion pack to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PlayStation 3 this year and received a PR-ish reply that Shivering Isles is still coming to Sony's next-gen console.

Although they did specify the window of release (anywhere between today and December 31), they weren't keen on revealing when exactly it would come out in 2007. As to anything regarding unique content, downloadable content, or how the expansion pack will be distributed, they were mum about it.

Now while inthezone, a member of the NeoGAF Forums, was happy to share the email reply with other RPG fans on the PS3, the news did spark concern regarding Sony's superior line up of title releases this fall. Many of the titles are big and very highly anticipated and fans of the game fear that the expansion pack would probably be forgotten by then.

Will Bethesda get another repeat of angry mobs at the gates? Unless they do share their information soon, just as the promise in the email, they just might. Here's to hoping they reveal more soon, folks!

The PlayStation 3 version of Oblivion is due for release next month, but the company has no finalized plans for online components. Spokesperson Pete Hines told trade weekly MCV, "We plan to support downloadable content on PS3, but we couldn't tell you how or when it will be out, because it's not clear how we're going to do that yet."

He added, "You cold point to any number of factors for why that is. Although it's impossible to say which is the better between [Xbox Live and PS3 Online], Xbox Live is easier to implement because we've had a much better sense of it at an earlier stage than with PS3."

"We get asked that a lot," admitted Pete Hines, Vice President-PR/Marketing for Bethesda, when Pro-G UK asked him if the company had any plans for an Elder Scrolls MMORPG.

The answer is no, not really, Pete explained his opinion that they couldn't do an Elder Scrolls MMO "unless it was with some fresh idea that no one has ever tried before." This isn't an unqualified "no," though. "Certainly, there's a chance, it's something we've talked about, but it's not anywhere in our immediate future." The key is to come up with that "something new" that will work in an MMO environment, and as it stands with Oblivion on the one hand, and World of Warcraft on the other, it just won't work.

Bethesda: 'Oblivion data duplication was exaggerated' (News)

Oblivion will make extensive use of the PS3's hard drive by caching multiple gigabytes of data, which helps with load times. Bethesda's Pete Hines has commented that recent reports of data duplication on the PS3 Oblivion disc have been exaggerated, and this technique isn't different from the similar strategy that was employed in the creation of the Xbox 360 game last year. Lastly, it's unclear if or when the PS3 will see the Shivering Isles content that's on the way to the PC and Xbox, though with a burgeoning PlayStation Network and plenty of unfilled hard drive space, it's not hard to imagine the expansion can be made available to PS3 owners somewhere down the road.
