"Terrific" sales of The Beatles: Rock Band are outpacing MTV/Harmonix parent Viacom's own expectations a week after its launch, says CEO Philippe Dauman.

"Sales have exceeded our internal projections and we've sold 25 per cent of our inventory in the first week," said Dauman, speaking at New York's Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference.

Viacom also says it is currently expecting about a 20 percent profit margin on the title, even though the royalty payout for the game is believed to be unusually costly to the company. Up to $40 million is possible for band representative Apple Corps, recordings owner EMI, and catalog publishing rights owner Sony/ATV Music Publishing -- "not even comparable to anything that has been done before," according to Sony/ATV Music Publishing chairman Martin Bandier.

Sales of music videogames are down 46 per cent year-to-date in the US marketplace, according to the NPD Group.

However, the category remains the third bestselling genre of 2009, and will see a boost in the coming months following the release of The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 in September, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

"With the introduction of Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 in September, a lot of folks have inquired about the performance of these titles and the music/dance genre," she said. "While sales of this genre are down 46 per cent year-to-date, unit sales are down much less because lower prices are playing into the dollar sales decline. It's still the third bestselling genre for the year after general action and multiple/other sports (where Wii Fit resides)."
With the latest digital equipment and today's gaming genius, one game is about to bring back so many memories and once again bring the house down on a small little Club down a side street in Liverpool City Centre. The Beatles made 'The Cavern Club' their home and whilst many musical artists of the generation played at the venue and have their names forever etched on a wall of fame outside, it was four young men that packed the place to bursting time after time..."

The ION Drum Rocker was released around the time Rock Band 2 came out and provided an alternative method of playing Rock Band with a set of very sturdy and durable drum pads. However, the cost of $299.99 may have been cost-prohibitive to some gamers.

Well, there is now another option. ION Audio has announced that you may buy a drum pad set without the cymbals, called the ION Drum Rocker Core. The set is now available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and soon for the Wii. This set is priced at $199.99 ($100 less than the ION Drum Rocker) and features the same great features of the original Drum Rocker, except without the cymbals. As an option, you can later upgrade it with the ION Drum Rocker 3-Cymbal Kit,which you can purchase for $129.99.

"The Beatles: Rock Band," Viacom Inc.'s latest challenge to the "Guitar Hero" video games, will test whether the company can attract new players and revive sales with the band's 1960s hits.

The game, tracing the Beatles' career from Liverpool in 1963 to their final rooftop performance in 1969 on Apple Corps' headquarters in London, will be released on Sept. 9 by New York- based Viacom, the owner of MTV and VH1. The band's label, EMI Group Ltd., will issue remastered CDs the same day and collect royalties from game sales.

"Rock Band" is the backbone of Viacom's MTV Games, and the franchise needs a hit to reverse slumping sales and stem projected losses through 2010. Falling purchases of earlier versions led to a 41 percent drop in second-quarter revenue at the division that includes games. Jesse Divnich, an analyst with Electronic Entertainment Design & Research, said the entire music category is running out of ways to attract new players.

Wired: Apparently Harmonix has had some second thoughts about the Beatles Rock Band special edition's $250 price tag, because this just appeared on Amazon: a "special value edition" of the game that includes the old Rock Band instruments.

It's got an MSRP of $160 and an Amazon price of $140 - much more affordable as an entry-level setup.

I pinged Harmonix to find out which instruments are in there - the first-gen wired ones or the second-gen wireless - but from the language on the Amazon listing it seems like it's the former.

Rock Band is slumping and is in freefall. It seeks a parachute to soften the blow, and The Beatles could be just that; despite projected loses in 2010. As we already know, their second quarter figures aren't good; with a 41% drop in revenue for the time period. Analyst Jesse Divnich has said that the slump is to do with the rhythm genre:"
According to NME, she's still offering a controlling hand in The Beatles' affairs -- notably, The Beatles: Rock Band. "She gave the designers hell," said Paul DeGooyer, senior VP of electronic games and music at MTV.

The near complete tracklist comes courtesy of September's Game Informer that features the Fab Four on their cover and incidentally scores it 8.75. This could in fact be the full track listing seeing as Game Informer states that the "game ships with fewer songs than they've come to expect." Still, 44 is a pretty good number. I'd hate to see the licensing fees for this title! The tracks and their appropriate albums are as follows.
The news came on the game's official Twitter feed: TheBeatlesRB on the following tweet:

Destructoid writes: "While at MTV yesterday to see a near-final build of The Beatles: Rock Band, I asked Harmonix PR guru John Drake to elaborate on something I'd heard from community manager Sean Baptiste during E3. According to Baptiste, the final movie for the game's story mode is just as mind-blowing as the opening cinematic that premiered at E3. He went as far as to say, "If you don't cry when you see it, you don't have a soul," calling the entire experience of The Beatles: Rock Band "the Brian's Song of videogames."

Drake agreed with that sentiment ("It is the Brian's Song of videogames! That's well said!"), noting that the end sequence was put together by Passion Pictures, the same production house that created the intro movie. He wouldn't show it to me, but to be honest, I didn't ask, and I would've declined if he had offered; I'd like to see it for the first time in-game. Instead, he told me that the movie "riffs off the beginning and takes it to a different level, and just is ... the best way to end a game I've ever seen." Boy, they sure know how to hype their stuff, don't they?"
Take a look at the current gaming charts and you could draw the conclusion that music games are now more popular than The Beatles. This includes a 50% stake in Sony/ATV Music, a company that owns the publishing rights to the majority of the Beatles music catalog.

So what does this mean for the upcoming Beatles Rock Band game should ownership switch hands?
But as the smoke clears and the debris falls back to Earth, the smoggy LA landscape becomes littered with questions. Now that we’ve had some time to pick through the remains of E3’s decadence, here’s what we’ve deduced.

Exclusive announcement deals are ...
