Tekken 6

With a veritable army of characters, has the flashy fighter become too big?

Words: Alex Dale, Xbox World 360 UK

Balance is a delicate thing, so easily lost. Tekken is a series that thrives on it – on striking a balance between fulfilling its remit as the ‘accessible’ 3D fighting game (button-mashing will get you further here than in most fighters) and offering a system substantial and even enough to allow the hardcore fans to battle at a competitive level. Tekken 5 managed this balance with aplomb, but while Tekken 6 is ostensibly little more than a high-def update, its revisions (of which, to its credit, there are many) are likely to result in it receiving a rather lukewarm reception, from players both old and new.

Beefy roster

With 42 selectable characters, this is the most expansive Tekken yet. It’s a roster size that nears Marvel vs Capcom territory, and although lapsed fans will find a number of familiar faces to cling to, newcomers might find the whole process a bit daunting. Doubly so, in fact, when they pause a fight to check out the command list expecting two flashy kicks and a dragon punch variant, only to be greeted with over 150 different moves of varying complexity.

Now, if you’re not familiar with Tekken, you might be a bit thrown off by its mix of serious-toned, awesome dudes with crazy hair, and the, um, more “flamboyant” characters. For instance, series veteran Roger Jr.:

Above: We love how the baby is striking the exact same pose. Also, who’s the “Jr.”?

If that’s not weird enough for you, Tekken’s also known for characters such as this guy:

Above: Okay, so he’s a living training dummy. We can roll with that. But what’s up with the chains? And then there are the Children of the Damned glowing eyes…

Luckily, the new characters mostly avoid ridicule, and have added some much-needed chainsaw arms and alcoholism to the Tekken Roster. Unfortunately, those two traits aren’t fused into one character, as that would officially make any future characters obsolete from the sheer badassness of drunken lumberjacking. Let’s meet a few of the new guys (and gals):

Miguel

Bullfighter Miguel’s sister was killed, so he eases the pain by quaffing copious gallons of liquor and kicking strangers. Awesomely, he does both at the same time, so drunken antics ensue mid-battle! Any similarities to Screech from Saved by the Bell are obvious.

Above: Getting pounded into the street by a drunk is all sorts of embarrassing

Alisa

Alisa is a cyborg who can sprout chainsaws from her arms, grow wings or remove her head. We fancy her madly, seeing as pink hair and sawblades are the best accessories for the most fashion-forward hottie. And removable heads can always come in handy.

Above: Terror cometh in the guise of a dainty, harmless-looking waif

Zafina

Zafina is a bendy young lass who crawls around like a spider-beast. Be still our beating heart! Okay, now beat again. In case you’re not into the whole pink-haired anime thing, this goth girl will surely tickle your fancy.

Above: She’d be handy on a date if you get mugged… especially if your attackers are sub-4 ft children

Leo

We wish, wish, wish we knew whether Leo was a boy or a girl. No one seems to know the truth. Maybe s/he’s a South African athlete? He’s clearly wearing lipstick, and his voice is quite feminine, and yet…

Above: It really doesn’t matter what gender they are when they’re handing your ass to you on a plate formed from your broken teeth glued together

Personally I found SC IV and SF IV unbearable, and I've always thought Tekken was better so I think I'll be pleased.

@ Cyberninja - 3 great games though... although they didn't say it was worse than Blaz Blue.

I for one enjoy this series more as it's easier to get into and isn't to cluttered (Marvel Vs. Capcom being the best example of cluster f**k haha!).

Plus the characters are crazy but not cliche anime style like many others (again Blaz Blue).

Personally i didn't like SFIV at all. i rented it and took it back after about 20 minutes of playing, which sucked cuz i'm a huge SF fan. But i just couldn't play the damned thing, i couldn't even read the moves list cuz the text was too small ( on a 36 In. TV) but i'm a def fan of tekken so i will be checking this one out pronto. Also when the hell are they gonna make a Street Fighter in fully graphically orgasmic 3D? I want tottally 3D Chunli in a short skirt already! ( minus the giant man hands she had in SFIV)

soul calibur's a better fighter than tekken? I did not know. My friends and I always found SC kinda gimmicky.

Remember guys, and review is to HELP you decide. You shouldn't look to a single review as an end all, be all. That being said, I think Dale did make some very good points. I'll still be looking at this, though. I've always had a soft spot for the Tekk. For me, it was always the perfect combination of stupid and awesome that I enjoy in a fighting game. Just never let your little sister play Christie/Eddy Gordo. Every combo is right+kick button mashing.

tekken is my favorite fighting game nomatter what is said. There are characters that could be cut but it still has the best mix b-masher and learning curve that makes it great

Worse then SFIV? A game that's hardly changed in the last 20 years? Please tell me they didn't just give tekken a 8 compared to the "Ken amd Ryu Hadouken and Shoriyuken spamming SFIV" with received a 10.

And WTF is Blaj Blue? Some new generic fighting game? But some how its so much better then tekken? B. S.

Then there is SC4. I would have to agree it has more to offer ,but when it comes to battle mechanics there is NO way its better. Oh and dont forget that one of SC4's most popular charchters was BORROWED from Tekken *cough* yoshimitsu *cough*

I demand you re-do this review GamesRadar!

Trust me, nothing outright bad about it! I love it! Online is terribly laggy in my experience though.

I think tekken has more imgintive characters than Soul Calibur 4 (a guy with a rhino head, say what?)

been a fan of tekken since the first and i could never get into SF since it was mostly bout who could spam the fastest, this game looks pretty cool. as for holding up against the other recently released i don't know much about blaze blue...SC4 is pretty good i got it, but it is not much different from number two and three except so higher graphics and interchangeable equipment.

I think the combo system is too punishing for beginners (one mistake and pop goes third/half of your bar) but the smaller discrepancies between the best and worst character kinda makes up for it, whereas in SFIV (which you gave too much credit for) most high level matches boils down to ryu vs sagat. All in all its still a great game and 8 is the right score
