Sony confirms wireless SingStar mics (News)

MCV: Following on from reports of a pending arrival for the long-awaited wireless microphones for Sony's SingStar, SCEE has confirmed to MCV that an early 2009 arrival is indeed on the cards.

An SCEE spokesperson stated: "We are indeed currently testing wireless mics with our community. We haven't actually announced the launch date or price point yet."

The source went on to say that the release date was likely to fall "in the early part of the new year".

Those of you that haven't bought SingStar yet because you are waiting for the mythical wireless mics may be in for a bit of a surprise.

In a recent contest to become beta testers of the wireless mics for SingStar it is stated that the mics work with both the PS3 and PS2.

Sony hasn't fallen behind in the social gaming race, it has insisted.

Speaking at the Gamer 3.0 conference this morning in London, which is part of the London Games Festival, Jamie MacDonald, vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios insisted that the SingStar, Buzz! And EyeToy games are "still hugely successful".

While the world waits patiently for SingStar Queen, Sony have gone and done the next best thing, and released two Queen song packs onto the PS3's downloadable SingStore. The ten songs included across the two packs will most probably all be found on the standalone PS2 version, and from the look of them, it's a highlights reel, with Bohemian Rhapsody, One Vision, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and I Want It All included.

A patch went out for SingStar a few hours ago which allows users of the popular music game to swap discs to access the content from other SingStar titles. However, this patch will only enable PS3 game discs to be swapped -- not PS2 games. (We're assuming that PS2 functionality will come at a later point.) For Americans that doesn't mean much, as SingStar Volume 2 won't be available until next month.

Edge writes: "The present and future of the SingStar franchise was brought more into focus at GC Leipzig Wednesday, as SCEE announced sales milestones and upcoming products for the karaoke series.

Through multiple press releases, Sony Europe has revealed that SingStar as a franchise has sold 13M discs across PAL territories, supplemented by sales DLC sales of 2M songs via the SingStore. In late April, SCEE announced that it had sold 12M retail copies of the games as well as 1M SingStore songs across the same region.

According to SCEE, one SingStore song is sold every ten seconds. My SingStar functionality has also been embraced by 200,000 users, who have uploaded over 50,000 videos to the service to date."

We were speaking to Reeves at an event in Santa Monica today and asked for his views on Microsoft's new karaoke game Lips.

"If you come to Leipzig, you will see the next generation of SingStar," he told us. "That's all I will say."

SingStar senior producer Tasmin Lucas tells Paris GDC attendees how Sony London has been able to crank out over 100 SingStar titles in the past four years.

If you've had trouble keeping up with the number of SingStar titles, it's because "by the end of the year, we'll have actually released 116 discs in four years," Tasmin Lucas, senior producer for Sony's SingStar franchise told professionals at the Paris Game Developers Conference on Monday.

SingStar Video Portal Coming Soon To North America (News)

A Sony spokesperson told MTV Multiplayer that the SingStar Web Video Portal, already available in different parts of the world through the official website, will soon be available in North America.

"We are working on some localization issues to integrate globally and it should be ready to roll out in the US shortly," said the Sony spokesperson. The SingStar video portal lets you watch SingStar user performances and vote for them.

Yesterday's 'version 2' update for SingStar seems to have brought more than just Harmony Mode. Indeed, you can now make use of SingStar Volume 2's best new feature, PSP connectivity, without buying Volume 2. Install the update patch, switch on Remote Play and if the SingStar disk is in the PS3 you can browse not only your media (videos, audio etc) stored on the PS3 harddrive but also access the SingStore and start your downloads going before you even get home from work.

Speaking at Sony's PlayStation Day in London, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves has revealed that SingStar for the PlayStation 3 has sold in excess of 220,000 units.

PlayStation.com forum user StalkingSilence found the unopened SingStar site for US. Currently, the site routes you away from singstargame.com to the old PS2 site on us.playstation.com. Using a simple country code substitution, you can see the unopened US SingStore site - which is now LIVE.

A lot of the songs and albums are missing information - they display [Missing text /LBi.SingStore/ID39 for EN-US] - and the ties with your PSN ID are vague, but you can see the information (and initial content) before anyone else!

SCEA will return to the Rock Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this week and promises to deliver fans a first look at three highly anticipated PS3 titles, SingStar, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, inside two fully interactive entertainment tents.

SingStar and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will share an interactive booth. The SingStar portion will feature a stage where fans can perform in front of a live audience. Since its 2004 debut on the PlayStation 2, the SingStar series has sold more than 12 million units in the PAL region alone, as announced by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE). For fiscal year 2007, SingStar sold 5 million units. SingStar launched for the PLAYSTATION 3 in the PAL region on December 2007. The online SingStore launched for the PLAYSTATION 3 release, where players could purchase individual tracks. One million tracks have been downloaded from the SingStore to date.

Last Friday saw yet another SingStar SingStore update. While it was a really rather large update, not many of the songs are in English and it was said by PS3Fanboy that even fewer are worth getting (The Clash and The Flaming Lips being our top choices). Instead there are plenty of songs from countries such as Sweden, Spain and Portugal to grab if you're up for a challenge.

Sony have announced the next batch of songs for the Singstore today, which are due for release on the 21st of March.

In all there are 70 new songs, although only 24 of these are in English, artists include Maximo Park, The Fresh Prince and Bananarama, which should make a few people happy.

Sony has issued a statement regarding the current lack of songs on the SingStar PS3 SingStore, promising new content on 18th January and more to follow in early February.

"SingStar fans have been asking when the SingStore will be populated with more songs," the statement reads. "Our original vision, as outlined in early preview coverage of SingStar, was to have more than 350 songs available on the SingStore. We are working hard to increase the volume of content as quickly as possible."

It has been reported that Sony has opened three soundproof pods at the O2 Arena, which are located inside the main entrance, to allow anyone to go along for a 30-minute slot and sing to their heart's content before the PlayStation 3 release of SingStar.

These pods will be open until December 18th and will also hold up to seven friends with slots allocated on a first come first served basis.

Sony product manager Lucy Garnett has said that "This is the ultimate SingStar experience, where gamers and up to seven friends can enjoy singing their hearts out in one of three themed studios for free. These even come equipped with stylists ready to buff, glitter and beautify them."

SignStar on PlayStation 3 will be released December 7th and is packed with 30 original recordings, HD videos. On this PS3 Version you can even download new songs via the SingStore and upload your photos and performances to My SinStar online how cool is that.

SCEA has confirmed the news to 1UP and refused to specify a new release date, even one within a "end of 2007" timeframe. Here's their official comment:

"In an effort to provide consumers with the most robust experience on the PlayStation 3, and access to a diverse catalog of downloadable content, the date of SingStar PS3 has been pushed back. We hope to have a new launch date confirmed in the near future. With a strong lineup currently available for the PS2 including SingStar Rocks, SingStar Pop, SingStar '80s, SingStar Amped and the limited edition SingStar Pop Ceramic White PlayStation 2 bundle, the franchise will continue to provide fun for the entire family this holiday season."

A release date for SingStar on the PlayStation 3 is currently up in the air as Sony continues to test downloadable content and community features for the next-gen version of one of its most popular social gaming franchises.

Although reviews have started to appear in the specialist press, a spokesperson for Sony has told GamesIndustry.biz that the game needs further testing, and would not be drawn on any specific release period.

In a recent interview with Joystiq, Engadget and PS Fanboy, Kaz Hirai noted that they need to provide a unique experience for PlayStation fans to interact with media. PS3 Singtar will launch with 350 songs, with more than 100 expected to be added every month.

Speaking in her keynote at this morning's Nordic Game conference, Paulina Bozek focused on "mass customisation" and how current trends have influenced the development of the PS3 instalment in the SingStar series.

The game is "nearly finished," said Bozek, and will ship this summer, but the American fell short of discussing costings for downloading tracks.

"We're going to be announcing our pricing quite soon , but I can't announce it today," she said.

From the game's "official" IGN blog comes word that SingStar, the PS3's champion unit-shifter in PAL territories, is almost done.

"So what exciting things can I tell you about the game. The SingStore is up and running here in the studio, and we've got hundreds of songs to download, at our fingertips. Finally we can browse through hundreds of songs and download exactly the tunes we want - it's fantastic to have the variety and choice.

The PS3 version of SingStar will come with 30 tracks pre-loaded onto the disc. A pamphlet sent to Australian retailers revealed the included content, also confirming that each song will include a HD video with it, according to palgn.com.
