Two More Added To PS3 Greatest Hits Line (News)

Times are tough, and money is tight. Who has $50-60 to spend on new games? Not as many people as there used to be, that's for sure. Now $30, that's more like it.

Which brings us to the two latest titles in Sony's Greatest Hits range for the PS3, Saints Row 2 and WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009. Both have just turned up on GameStop's site, and while a listing like that would normally only be good for a "rumour" post, both also have Great Hits box art, so these are a lock.

This anti-GTA IV doesn't have the technical niceties (graphical hiccups abound) or Oscar-worthy story of Rockstar's magnum opus, but wins on pure fun factor and gleeful silliness. Co-op is huge fun and the character creation tools are immense. Score one for the Third Street Saints.

SPOnG writes: THQ has told SPOnG that the reason for the Saints Row 2 DLC delay is that it wants the content to be more closely tied to the Red Faction: Guerrilla demo.

A THQ rep told us, "This is to co-incide with the public launch of the Red Faction Guerrilla singleplayer demo. The Ultor Exposed pack includes Red Faction inspired content including a vehicle and outfit right out of RFG so we wanted to sync them up so gamers can enjoy both at the same time."

Kotaku writes: "Nearly all of Volition's quality assurance department were laid off today in Champaign, Illinois, THQ confirmed to Kotaku.

"Today we notified 86 of the 102 employees in the Volition quality assurance department that they will be let go," a THQ spokesman told Kotaku. "Our quality assurance will now be primarily conducted through THQ's centralized QA facilities, with a small staff remaining on-site in Champaign.

Volition developed games Descent, Freespace, Summoner, Saints Row 2, The Punisher and are working on upcoming shooter Red Faction: Guerrilla as well as Saints Row 3."

THQ have not confirmed a release date for the PC version of Saint's Row 2, although the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will be coming out on the 17th of October, and some retail chains list the PC version for the same date, were as others list it for November.

So we decided to ask THQ about a release window for the PC version, and they told us that no date has been given for the PC version, so they couldn't comment on it being delayed.

IGN Bias - SaintsRow 2 Will Have Trophies (News)

In IGN review it said that PS3 fans would miss Trophies in SaintsRow 2 which is a huge lie. Either the reviewer sucks at playing games or either he was payed to lie. Anyway, V-Cirose one of Volition (THQ) mods confirms that SaintsRow 2 will support Trophies.

At the end of the day, you shouldn't really trust those bias reviews.

THQ has revealed the all-star cast that will be lending their voices for Saints Row 2 this October.

Poison Ivy and My Name Is Earl star Jaime Pressly leads the way, playing a character known as Jessica who appears to be the girlfriend of one of the mob bosses. She apparently loves voicing computer game characters because she "can be as sexy as she wants to be".

Neil Patrick Harris also joins the Saint Row 2 team voicing 'DJ Veteran Child', a drug dealer who's not very good at his day job. And Eliza Dushku, perhaps most famous for her role as Faith in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series, plays Shaundi, a drug addict apparently based on a few of her teenage friends.

Saints Row developer Volition has elaborated on the botched release of the original game on PS3, telling CVG in an interview "we just couldn't get our heads around the Cell technology".

"In Saints Row 1 we got about half way through the process and then we realised that we just couldn't get our heads around Cell," producer Dan Sutton told CVG. "It's just really complicated and I'm sure you noticed other games like Stranglehold push their dates up. "Cell's really, really powerful. The problem is it's also a really different system, the way it uses multi-threading technology."

Gamedaily.biz writes: "Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian cautions that THQ's IP is a big risk, but he believes the publisher's management is taking the right approach to costs and product strategy.

Lazard Capital Markets recently hosted investor meetings with publisher THQ and apparently came away more optimistic about the company's long-term prospects. Analyst Colin Sebastian said that THQ management is "not standing still" and is "focused on improving execution."

"...we believe management is taking a number of steps to address recent product and financial underperformance," he said. "Improved control over the company's cost structure and better product management should generate more consistent performance, in our opinion."

THQ recently delayed one of its more high profile games, Saints Row 2. At the time, Janco Partners' Mike Hickey questioned the "credibility foundation" of THQ and whether Saints Row can truly be considered a franchise."

The original Saints Row from 2006 sold over 2 million copies on Xbox 360 and was well-received by critics, but the general consensus was that it copied a lot from the reigning king of crime sandbox, Grand Theft Auto.

And with the Volition-developed Saints Row 2 launching in the same year as GTA IV, Farrell sought to convince investors that this sequel would offer something different from Rockstar's hit megafranchise.

The recently-delayed Saints Row 2 is THQ's premier title for this fiscal year, but Hickey said in an investor note on Tuesday that the Agoura Hills, Calif.-based publisher's fiscal year depends too much on the game's success.

I thought I'd drop you a line to let you know what's going on with Saints Row 2.

First off, as many of you have seen, we have moved the release date back from August 26th to October 14th. I know, I know...its got to be a bummer for a lot of you wanting to get your hands on SR2, but we want to give you the best quality game possible. Single-player, co-op, and multiplayer have all undergone multiple iterations and polish; and now we have even more time to tweak and balance gameplay. Its a designer's dream come true.

We are also already weeks into our graphics "polish" stage. The world is starting to look absolutely amazing! THQ has delayed the release of Saints Row 2 by two months due to product quality and marketing considerations.

The game will now be released on October 14 instead of August 26, meaning it will miss the publisher's fiscal second quarter.

To kickoff their Gamers' Day event being held in downtown San Francisco, THQ today announced the official release date, pre-order campaign plans, and the launch of the official website for Saints Row 2. The game will ship on August 26, 2008 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and gamers can pre-order their copy starting tonight (April 3) at 6 PM PST. THQ has today unveiled the key titles that will form the publisher's fiscal 2009 video game line-up. Scheduled for release in the 12-month period ending March 31, 2009 are a range of new editions to existing franchises, new original games and social and party titles.

Gamers can look forward to new editions of multi-million unit franchises, including Saints Row 2, Red Faction: Geurrilla and WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009. All new video game titles on the way include Darksiders: Wrath of War, Deadly Creatures and de Blob. Additionally THQ plans to release new social and party games for the Wii, including Battle of the Bands and Big Beach Sports.

We've seem some odd teaser trailers in our time, but the first for THQ's sequel Saints Row 2 really wins the weird - and rubbish - award we've just made up.

Devoid of gameplay and even cinematics, the teaser features dialogue and squiggly black lines against a purple-sun background that eventually forms itself into the Saints Row 2 logo.

Developer Volition believes Saints Row 2 will more than hold its own in the battle of the gangster sandbox games when it goes head to head with GTA 4 this year.

New details have piled in on THQ sequel to Saint's Row, which is heading to Xbox 360 and PS3 next year.

According to the latest mag previews, Saint's Row 2 is set to feature a city 45 percent larger than the Xbox 360 original, with new vehicles including motorbikes, jet-skis and speedboats. So far, so GTA.

What's new though is the introduction of aircraft such as planes and helicopters, which excitingly you can smash right through buildings. You can't destroy buildings entirely (CVG don't thinks the US censors would be happy with that), but smashing through windows should open up plenty of gameplay opportunities.
