We were OK with the F1 car in Super Runabout. We chuckled at the VW-alike hippy van in San Andreas. But there are some in-game vehicles that we just have to call out as being ridiculous. So sit down, strap in and try not to let anyone see that it's you in the driver's seat. Now, the reverse is true. Bandai Namco is taking a home-based Ridge Racer game and turning it into an arcade attraction.

Ridge Racer 7 is being reborn as Ridge Racer 7 3D Version. The arcade attraction makes use of a special television that uses filters to make the images come out at players. You have to wear special glasses to see the effect, although different from classic 3D glasses, these look like standard single-colored shades. For bystanders, the game screen looks blurry, like two slightly displaced images overlain.

He said the average game now costs $8.6 million to create. "We have to sell at least 500,000 copies per title worldwide to make a profit on PlayStation 3 games,'' said Takasu. The firm offered two games or PS3's launch in Japan and the U.S, Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam, both of which are "selling well " he said.
Ridge Racer 7 doesn't usher in a bold new era for next-generation racing, it won't justify the sky-high cost of the PS3 and - true to its lineage - it's as unrealistic as a racing game gets. Now that we've established what the game isn't, let's talk about what it is: fun.

When the 360 launched, hardcore gamers quickly shelved let-downs like Perfect Dark Zero in favor of Ridge Racer 6, which - despite its so-so graphics and lack of any real innovation - provided one of the system's most solid, ...

Sony's PlayStation 3 is set to arrive this week on November 17th. With just 400,000 units available at launch in the USA, and an unknown number of game consoles arriving the rest of year. The total is expected to be below 1 million units in 2006, as a result many publishers have decided to delay their games so more time can be spent polishing them.

From minor delays like Need for Speed: Carbon being delayed until November 20. To big launch lineup losses like MotorStorm which was delayed to March, 2007. The PS3 launch will now have 13 titles including Resistance: Fall of Man and Ridge Racer 7.
One of the most exciting things about Ridge Racer 7 is its online play. It's the first time that a PlayStation installment of the game will ever make the leap. Namco Bandai brought the game around for one last test before the PS3 launch, just so we could check out the performance of the online mode, and we're pretty ...

Three more launch titles will require a firmware update before you'll be able to play them. Much like what happens with the PSP, you'll see an alert that says you must upgrade to a newer firmware version before playing.

Genji: Days of the Blade, Ridge Racer 7 and Resistance: Fall of Man will all require a system update to version 1.02. The update ships on the disc so that you won't need to be online to download anything, but you should of course be able to update before the games come by hopping online.

The Nintendo Nsider Forums are lighting up with glee (and spilling onto Digg) at how horribly terrific it would be if Ridge Racer 7 required a 5 GB install on PlayStation 3's hard disk drive. Some generous (in favor of Sony) math calculates that the install would take 9 minutes and 46 seconds. The assumption is most PS3 games will require HDD dumps, forcing users to constantly install, erase, and reinstall -- these data chunks would fill up the drives fast; certainly the 20 GB model.

Despite being one of the best-looking titles for the PlayStation 3 at launch (unless you're Ridge Racer 7 fetishist Tom, it's between this and MotorStorm really), Insomniac Games' Resistance: Fall of Man will not be integrated with the console's online functionality, specifically the built-in buddy list - instead, it will use its own buddy list, clan management system, and so on.

That's according to Insomniac boss Ted Price, who was speaking to Eurogamer's Rob Fahey earlier this week in an interview for the ThreeSpeech blog. While the decision to make the game run its own buddy list and so on is a blow to Sony's claims of an integrated online service - and in fact, it harks back to the bad old days of the PS2 online system - Price apparently left the door open for the possibility that the two systems could be reconciled in future, saying that "it is definitely possible to update the game via online."

At least the news about the rest of the game's online functions is more positive. According to Price, the game supports four player split screen, and up to 40 players online - with games being hosted on Sony's own servers for low-latency play.
Let's hope there's a way for end users to put larger hard drives into the PS3, especially if we're going to be installing Linux and playing DivX movies off of it

The Famitsu PS2 article, translated by IGN, confirms news that Ridge Racer 7 will offer the option to install part of the game to the PS3 hard drive. Up to 5GB of game data will be held on the hard drive to enable faster load times.

Teramoto also confirmed that there will be no distinct separation between offline and online game modes, with all the money and ranks won in the game applying to the game as a whole. RR7 matches the 14-player online races found in the Xbox 360's RR6.

Not one to blow his own trumpet, Teramoto also expressed his pleasure to offer RR7 in 1080p, at 60fps and in 5.1, something he claims is only possible on the PS3.

One of the big, unanswered questions surrounding Namco Bandai's Ridge Racer 7 for PlayStation 3 is whether the game would support any peripherals, namely an analog Logitech controller. 1up has received word from the publisher that no peripheral support is planned for RR7, besides the previously mentioned SIXAXIS support, which will make use of the motion sensor in some as yet unannounced manner.
A lot of the games at Sony's PlayStation 3 pre-launch event seemed a little bit... sluggish. Not so Namco's near-final version of Ridge Racer 7, which had us zooming around tracks about 200 miles an hour - and it felt like it. With extremely crisp track graphics, super-shiny cars, and precise control, RR7 looks to be a buffed-up version of exactly the same thing we've been used to for years - polished till it ...

As ever, the core of the racing experience relies on being able to drift successfully around corners, build up your boost meter (again, divided into three sections) and unleash it Burnout-style at strategic moments (double or triple boosting by holding down R2 and L2). You can also gain some extra momentum by 'drafting' opponents by edging close to the car in front of you and gain extra momentum in their slip stream, and a little indicator underneath the boost bar gives you a little visual indicator to let you know just how much extra pull you're gaining. With skill and timing, you can slip beyond opponents, boost on the follow-through and not only leave them for dust, but top up your meter again in the process. To emphasise the speed burst, the edges of the screen warp accordingly.
Ever since the original PlayStation - and as recently as PSP - Ridge Racer has always been a solid Sony favourite. So it's little surprise that there's another one on deck - and it's not a big shock that the game hasn't evolved greatly from the arcade-style racing we've come to know and love (those of us who are fans) or ignore (those who crave the fine-tuned perfection of Gran Turismo or the mod-obsessed diversions of Need For Speed).

So that's the short of it: ...

When the PlayStation 3 goes on sale in Japan November 11, six games will definitely be available: Genji: Days of the Blade, Mah-Jong Fight Club Online, Mobile Suit Gundam: Target In Sight, Resistance: Fall of Man, Sega Golf Club featuring the Miyazato Family, and--wait for it--Ridge Racer 7. Sony also confirmed Armored Core 4 would arrive sometime in November.

In December, Sony has locked down a trio of games: F1 Championship (aka Formula One 06), Gran Turismo HD, and MotorStorm. Three more carry a general "winter 2006" release date in Japan: Need for Speed Carbon, Enchant Arm, and the railroad sim Railfan. Another pair will ship during "2006": Sonic the Hedgehog and Fatal Inertia, though the later is only "projected" to make that vague release window.

According to Sony, 2007 will see at least 12 more PS3 titles come to market across the Pacific. Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Monster Kingdom: Unknown Realms, The Eye of Judgment, and Wangan Midnight will all arrive in the "spring," while Everybody's Golf 5 and Warhawk will land in the "summer." Other games confirmed for the year are Afrika (working title), Coded Arms: Assault, and the much-awaited Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Sony listed a sextet of several high-profile titles with the most nebulous release date of all, "TBD." Those included Shirokishi, fl0w (working title), Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War, Devil May Cry 4, and Final Fantasy XIII.
It's not a PlayStation launch without a Ridge Racer, and along with these new screens comes confirmation (if any was needed) that Namco's racer will be on the starting lines for PS3 launch.

Featuring customisable cars, vicious rivalry-inspiring internet ranking (only one person world-wide can hold the top spot) and new courses that look even further across the globe for inspiration - such as the South-East Asian-looking tracks below - fears that RR7 would be a rush ...
New PlayStation? Time for a new Ridge Racer. Though it's still synonymous with high-speed arcade racing action after all these years, this series hasn't made any bold leaps in recent memory. This time, though, it sounds as if the team is trying to lay new features on top of the drift-heavy racing the series is well-known for.

The company didn't actually show the PS3 title, instead opting for a pre-rendered video designed to show its vision for future installments of the series.
Four months later, and we're at last set to get a first look at actual Ridge Racer 7 material. While Namco Bandai will be updating the game's Japanese website later this week, the latest issue of Famitsu got the scoop with a few new details.
Namco has announced Ridge Racer 7 for PlayStation 3, and the company confirmed today that it'll be touching down this November as a PS3 launch title.

It's certainly a surprise, given that we were expecting a buffed-up conversion of the Xbox 360's Ridge Racer 6 to appear. But a whole new game?

It's not clear whether that's a global launch for RR7 to go with the PS3's worldwide release, however, or if it's just for Japan. If we had to bet, our money would go on the latter.

Namco has now officially confirmed that Ridge Racer 7 will be a launch title for PS3, meaning it'll be touching down with the console this November.
