Fists of Plastic is a bit like Smash Bros. after it had a wander around LittleBigPlanet, but without a mind for constructing anything – and a lot more pain. Not all on screen, unfortunately. Four players, one arena and a physics model that provides a near infinite amount of collisions and hurt between shiny marionettes is what Rag Doll Kung Fu is about.
A generous sprinkling of Lemmings and a dash of LittleBigPlanet go a long way to making Flock! one of the trickiest and most charming downloadable games out there. As with all great puzzlers, the premise is simple, yet completing each level is anything but.
Wanted: Weapons of Fate is like a cheeseburger. Okay. Bear with us. There’s nothing clever about it; no technical genius; and certainly nothing especially well-crafted. It’s a game you’ll blaze through in under four hours, with no multiplayer modes to bring you back for more.
For sheer numbers, Burn Zombie Burn is the ultimate zombie game. There can be hundreds of the cartoon corpses on screen at any time – and only one of you to put them down (or two if you’re playing in co-op). It’s essentially an update of SNES classic Zombies Ate My Neighbors but distilled to its pure arcade core. That’s you, loads of brilliant weapons, and hordes of the undead to use them on.
Watchmen - the comic book - is one of the artistic high points of the form. Watchmen - the movie based on the comic book - is a fairly close reproduction of the graphic novel, with some mostly forgivable divergences. Watchmen: The End is Nigh - the videogame based on the movie based on the comic - is, despite grand production values, the shameless cash-in that fans feared the film would be.
There are no real sound effects in this game. Kind of. Instead of the harsh clank of puck on ice you now get the noise of a bored EA developer sat at his desk making swoosh noises. And ‘Hup’, ‘Oip’ and ‘Florp!’ Oh dear.
Like Linger in Shadows and Flower before it, Noby Noby Boy is a PSN game without missions, objectives, enemies – and some might say a point or a purpose. You’re either going to view it as one of the most addictive titles you’ll play all year, or a waste of money.
Following up a smashing success is a tall task – just ask an Oscar or Grammy winner. Fans will demand the impossible, clamoring for innovation and fresh perspective without straying too far from the successful formula. The makers of MLB 09 The Show surely feel similar pressure, having achieved a spectacular success with last season’s edition. Is it possible to top a seminal touchstone without trying to do too much or, even worse, overreach and take a step (or two) backwards?
Flower is likely to inspire the sort of purple prose that always appears whenever games skirt the periphery of ‘art’; but to bury the game under a load of pretentious hyperbole is to do it a disservice. The concept – guide a bunch of petals around evocative landscapes, gradually bringing colour and life back to the world – is strong enough that such prose is redundant.
PixelJunk Monsters got there first in bringing the classic tower-defense genre to the PSN, yet Savage Moon just about edges out in front to take the lead with its utterly bleak setting and screeching, scuttling creepy crawlies. The aim of the game is really incredibly simple: players must prevent waves of bugs from destroying their vulnerable moon base by building automatic weapons defenses around the map.
