A recent study by University of Southern California Professor Dmitri Williams found an overwhelming lack of diversity in video game characters. Williams, a social psychologist by training, compared the ethnic diversity found in his survey of 150 games across nine platforms and all ratings to categories contained in the American census. He found that fewer than 3 percent of video game characters were recognizably Hispanic and none were playable. Native Americans and biracial characters were practically non-existent. African Americans enjoyed a rate of 10.74 percent, with a big caveat; they were mostly athletes and gangsters.

The assertion that whites constitute the majority of consumers in the gaming industry is inaccurate. According to The Kaiser Family Foundation, African American youth between the ages of 8 and 18 play games 30 minutes more per day than white youth, while Hispanics play an average of 10 minutes more.

Until research is done on the motivation of video game developers and the publishers they work for, we can only make educated guesses as to the overwhelming lack of diversity within the industry. We can be certain about one thing, however. From the press to the games they cover, the absence of black or Hispanic characters is limiting its fan base, its narrative potential, and its creative ideas.

Ian Fisher writes: One thing we have received thats related Resident Evil is a plethora of info for Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth live-action Resident Evil movie. So far details on Resident Evil: Retribution have remained elusive but with the film starting principal photography next month series star Milla Jovovich has opted to reveal some things via her Twitter account.

Some video game movies are...OK. Most are terrible. Why is that? Allow a guy who makes video game movies for a living (try and) explain. Paul W.S. Anderson has been involved with every Resident Evil movie since the first one all the way back in 2002, and thinks the reason most game adaptations suck is simple: a lack of knowledge. A lot of video game movies are made by directors who don't know the video games they are based on from a hole in the head, he told MCV. They don't do justice to the games, they don't immerse themselves in the games, they don't understand what people liked from the games. And that is the wrong approach and clearly those movies don't work. You can fool people once, you know. I was excited to see the Tomb Raider movie the first time it came out. I saw it, it wasn't very good, I wasn't very excited to go and see the second film. I think with Resident Evil it is very telling that each movie has done better than the one before.

The first tidbits of information on Resident Evil 6 might have been leaked. The above image of what could be the official logo of RE6 was posted on the forums of the site relyonhorror.com by akiraodasan, who claims it's from a behind-closed-doors Capcom press conference...

TheGamingLiberty.com: Capcom are asking followers on Facebook to tell them what they think the company are doing right and they need to work on when it comes to the Resident Evil franchise.

Capcom has a ton of merchandise to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Resident Evil including a replica pistol. You can purchase Chris Redfields Samurai Edge, but it wont save you during a zombie outbreak since its an air gun. At 20,790 yen ($244) this Marui made replica is quite the collectable. 1/6 scale models of Jill Valentine wearing a battle suit and Ada Wong in her Resident Evil 4 outfit will also go sale this year. Both are roughly 28 cm tall and the Jill model has 30 moveable points. Fans can grab the Jill Valentine model in May for 18,900 yen ($221). A release date for the Ada model has not been announced.

Resident Evil 4. HD. Resident Evil 4 HD! We heard rumours yesterday that such an incandescent combination of digital wonders was to bless us with its presence, and now, unless Capcom has taken to playing around with Photoshop's image-sharpening controls to mess with us on quiet lunchtimes, we have screenshot proof that the rumour was true.

What does it look like? It looks like Resident Evil 4 HD! Resident Evil 4! In HD!

HD is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only has it been instrumental in making this generation one of the biggest genuine evolutions we've seen so far, but it's given us a legitimate reason to go back and play the best games of yesteryear, via re-releases that actually add something. And it means that devs can make double the profit on an old game without having to fork out the budget of an actual game development, so everybody wins!*

But while the worth of HD remakes varies depending your love of the particular game and your willingness to look past occasional last-gen coarseness**, when one of the best games of all time is tipped for the HD touch-up, all considerations become meaningless in the face of frantic clapping and squealing.

*Your mileage may vary.

**And the fact that emulators do this stuff for free. BUT ARE ILLEGAL.
