Prince of Persia (next-gen)

Also known as: Prince of Persia

The saber-slinging desert acrobat returns with solid gameplay and a captivating new girlfriend

“Okay,” you say, “we get it – Elika’s cool. What about the rest of the game?” Well, it looks phenomenal, especially in motion. The graphics are difficult to describe – they look almost like cel shading, but with a greater level of detail and a pencil-stroke look to many of the textures. Add in the smoothness with which everything moves, and you have a simply glorious visual style.

Speaking of movement, Prince of Persia focuses much more on the process of getting from one place to another than have previous games in the series. There are few puzzles, and those that are here are fairly small in scale and simple in scope when compared to previous Prince titles. This lack of puzzles is one of the game’s few disappointments, but the new focus is still compelling. The emphasis here is on you and Elika bounding around the world like tandem free runners, pausing only to dispatch a squad of enemies or one of the four recurring bosses.

Even combat retains the game’s ballet-like style, and once you’ve latched onto the timing, you’ll be busting out sophisticated team combos with a grace that would shatter the minds of even the most talented gymnasts and martial artists. True, we would have liked to fight a greater variety of enemies. Each boss reappears several times, which is repetitive and frustrating – we want to kill bosses, not push them off a cliff or have them just run away. Plus, once you understand enemy attack patterns and the game’s slightly slower than you’d expect timing, the level of challenge decreases dramatically. This, combined with the fact that Elika literally won’t let you die, could make things feel too easy and auto-piloted for some die-hard hardcore players. But we didn’t mind, and would still recommend Prince of Persia to everyone – it’s too good, too beautiful, and too charismatic to pass up.

The stupid girl in the first (er, Sands of Time) was the only real problem with that game. You'd get to the end of a tough fight that you really kicked ass, then the stupid girl would die all the way across the room, and you couldn't save her, and had to start over again. Good to hear this companion actually works right.

I've been looking forward to this game for a long time. Glad the Prince finally gets a truly satisfying game set in 3D. I loved his original 2D games, and I like how they set this game to be more like that.

NelosAngelos... You've gotta be kidding me. Sands of Time was as close to the original games as you could possibly get... this is just distancing itself, hell, the Prince sounds like some random American moron, what happened to being Persian?

Not that it's a bad game, I'm looking forward to it, it's just that SoT seriously was the 2D games in a modern environment. The two games after that.. not so much.

I'm surprised, I didn't think I would bother with it but it does look pretty cool.

I still don't see why they give PoP so much attention though, I think Jet Set Willy deserves a remake.

I used to hate PoP games but this game is fantastic. The difficulty is I think actually somewhat nice, the graphics and movements are very smooth and don't glitch, and of course, Elika. I do think that the boss battles and the minion battles are a bit repetitive, but I love the fact they put more focus on navigating the level rather than fighting a bunch of stupid minions and having insanly hard puzzles. 10/10 awesome, great, one of the year's best.

I just finished with it and i have to say it is some game. It's a WAY easier than the others and thats one of the reasons i liked the others. The difficulty made it stand out from the crowd. But I still loved this. Elika is brilliant and even if it's the same bosses in each area, Elika actually makes it fun to kick their ass again and again and aga....

tha thing that makes it stand out from the other games is....well actully theres alot of thing but ill just say some.its not like those typycal 3D enviorments where you have to wait for it to load when you go to sertain spots it just loads everything at one time and its surprisinglY Quick.Another thing is that when you come to an enemy its not just like you hit them with a few shots and there dead but instead it goes to a different mode and the buttons do diffrent things and its like a boss battle so it alaws you to do diffrent kinds of attacks and more options plus once you beat the game you can start again whith a diffrent look.lastly the hole game looks like a movie and you can choose when to talk with elika or the enemy when in a boss battle.And.............well i think i said enoph if tis was my revew id give it a 10/10
