In the context of a game, Achievements and Trophies are harmless. They're just carrot-dangling tactics that we're happy to indulge for our greedy pursuit of intangible virtual rewards. We wouldn't think twice about nail-bombing a kitten orphanage if it meant five more gamer points.

But, let's say, purely for the purposes of this here article, that we take Achievements and Trophies out of their virtual world settings and reconsider them ...

IncGamers reports that Codemasters today released a playable demo of the upcoming game Overlord II is now available to download for the PS3 and PC.

In addition to the Xbox 360 demo, players can now obtain a demo for the PlayStation 3 from the PlayStation Store. The PC version can be downloaded from the Overlord website.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has a fairly well-known track record when it comes to video games. They inexplicably don't mind punting chickens in Fable 2, defenseless chickens that are no threat to your character whatsoever, but they have a big problem with defending yourself from vicious dogs that are trying to bite your nuts off in Call of Duty: World at War. What, then, would they say about what's going on in Overlord II?

Eurogamer writes, "Dutch developer Triumph has admitted being a "little too late" with downloadable content for Overlord, and plans to offer extras for the sequel "closer to release".

Creative director Lennart Sas wasn't ready to share specifics, but did suggest there will also be less need to tack on features post-launch, leaving more time for substantial additions like Overlord: Raising Hell, for a game already "a lot prettier" than before..."

Rhianna Pratchett returns to write script for Overlord II (News)

Codemasters announced today that Rhianna Pratchett has been signed as scriptwriter for Overlord II, the sequel to the hit twisted fantasy adventure from Triumph Studios, and both series extensions - Overlord Dark Legend and Overlord Minions - coming 2009.

The announcement sees Pratchett continuing her role as writer and narrative designer for the delightfully despotic series and follows her nomination for Best Videogame Script for her work on the original Overlord game in the Writers' Guild Awards 2008. In addition to videogames, the prestigious Writers' Guild Awards recognises the best in British writing talent across TV and radio drama, soap, comedy, theatre and movie screenplay categories. The awards will be held at BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) on Sunday 23rd November 2008 in London.

Edge writes: "SouthPeak Interactive reported record sales of $40.2 million for its fiscal year 2008, an increase of 220 percent year-on-year, the company said Tuesday.

The firm attributed the sharp rise in sales to the increased number of current generation releases.

Net income was $1.6 million, up from a net loss of $866,000 a year ago."
