PS3 News from N4G | Home
PS3 - Home - Sony focuses on PS3 Home, holds off on third party tools Despite the testing stage of the new Home feature of the PlayStation 3 being underway right now and Sony making the service a priority for the success of the new hardware, it seems that the company has held off from releasing tools to Third Party developers a little too long.

There was a three day conference called 'Devstation' that took place last week down in London, UK, where Sony Europe threw around major buzzwords such as 'technology', 'innovation' and 'creativity' as it tried to show how developer-focused it is trying to be. The event was a major chance to unveil the plans and overall strategic work for the future of both the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3, keeping over four hundred and fifty Third Party developers firmly in the loop, plus getting them up to speed on the PlayStation Network and impending Home service.

Michael Denny, Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Europe, who keynoted the event was quoted as saying:

"We're breaking [into] a new business, much as we did with the first PlayStation. We used to be predominantly a single platform publisher, but now with PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2, we're truly a multiplatform publisher with a mix of products and services that appeal to a wide range of tastes, lifestyles and budgets.

"With Home, we are having to manage a much more sophisticated business and that's exciting and pioneering. It's great to be given the opportunity at DevStation to stand up and inspire our valued third party partners to join us."

Whilst some developers are currently underway with talks regarding being launch partners for the extensive Home online network feature, it seems that development kits have not even been sent out, with Sony planning on rolling out the first generation of Home creation tools later this month. But with Sony determined to deliver strong support for Home, its impressive 3D lobby, the co...

PS3 News from N4G | Stranglehold
PS3 - Stranglehold - John Woo's Hard Boiled on Blu-ray (via PS3) For the past few years, acclaimed director John Woo has been working on 'Stranglehold', a game which follows the Inspector Tequila and the highly choreographed gun fights that he seems to always be caught up in. The game is a continuation of the story of the insanely popular John Woo movie 'Hard Boiled', and those who pick up the collectors edition version of the game will the get the movie newly remastered in high definition on Blu-ray.

A few months ago, Midway, the company which is producing the game, polled users on its website if they would like Hard Boiled included with the purchase of the game. Users overwhelmingly responded that they would, and Midway has responded with $70 Collectors Edition of the game ($10 more than a regular PS3 game).

No word if this would be the only way to get the movie in high definition, but it will be a nice bonus for those who buy the game.

PS3 News from N4G | Killzone 2
PS3 - Killzone 2 - Sony Sees Record Net on Bravia TVs, Smaller PS3 Loss Sony Corp., the world's second-largest maker of consumer electronics, said profit will more than double to a record this year on sales of Bravia televisions and narrower losses at the PlayStation game unit.

Net income will rise to 320 billion yen ($2.7 billion) for the year ending March 31, 2008, Tokyo-based Sony said today. Its fiscal fourth-quarter loss widened to the most in four years, after the PlayStation 3 was outsold by Nintendo Co.'s Wii console. The stock rose 1.3 percent in Frankfurt from the Tokyo close.

Reduced game losses would help Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer meet his promise to raise the company's operating profit to 5 percent of sales this year, on a par with larger rival Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Earnings at Sony will also get a boost from the movie unit, whose ''Spider-Man 3'' generated record box-office sales when it opened this month.

PS3 News from N4G | NBA 2K7
PS3 - NBA 2K7 - EA's NBA Live cover Gilbert Arenas prefers NBA 2K series The next time EA decides to put an athlete who's an actual gamer on their NBA Live cover, it might help to have vetted him first. As Jon Robinson of IGN points out in a piece about who will replace Shaq as NBA 2K's cover athlete, Gilbert Arenas would have made sense. In a Q&A session on NBA.com last November when Arenas was asked if he plays NBA Live he answered, "No. I play NBA 2K. It's real, the NBA 2K. The other one, now ... it's too fake."
