As much as we loved 2007's Ace Combat 6, its storytelling and general presentation felt very much trapped in the past. With the newly announced Assault Horizon, Namco appears to be striving for a decidedly Modern Warfare feel - notice the real-world locations, the first-person "oh shit" moments and the general grit that have so far eluded the console versions of Ace Combat. Gotta say, this looks fuggin' cool, especially for PS3 fans who had to sit out Ace 6.

As we explained in our recent preview, the latest Ace Combat is a modern-era departure from the series' fictional, melodramatic roots. Where there was once a made-up army fighting in a made-up country, there's now a battle taking place over a besieged African city. Real-world locations, helicopters and close-quarters combat highlight the game's many new points, but this trailer emphasizes the gritty, darker tone of Assault Horizon, which roughly translates to "make it look like Modern Warfare" and soak that sucker in guitars!
Namco's drastic re-imagining of its Ace Combat flight series is now officially slated for an October 11 US release date, with the Europe release following on October 14. Gone are the fictional cities and near-space-age tech from earlier Ace games - now it looks to feature real-world locations with comparatively serious storytelling.
Here's the latest trailer out of Namco, called "The Shark." It features an evil ace pilot who's earned the titular nickname.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, Namco's update to its long-running shooter series, is – like its predecessors – closer in tone to Star Fox than a flight sim. For this clip, though, the “this ain't your daddy's flight simulator!” positioning is kept to a minimum: with the year's biggest games being mainly tech-heavy military shooters, you'd be a damn fool not to play up the similarities between the new title and, say, some sort of warfare title in a modern setting, or perhaps a game about a field with battles on it. And Ace Combat: Assault Horizon may be loud, brash and wantonly destructive, but it's no damn fool: check the green-on-black titles, blood-on-lens damage effects and wealth of shots that could have come straight out of Infinity Ward's or DICE's latest...
This latest trailer for Namco Bandai's Ace Combat: Assault Horizon takes a break from the frenetic action that's characterized the game so far. Instead, the clip offers the opportunity to expand your horizon-assaulting experience with some multiplayer DLC. Have you always wanted to visit Tokyo? Do so via this trailer: in the game, you'll be too busy dodging missiles and screaming at your co-pilot (as is our understanding from Top Gun) to enjoy the view...
