The funny thing about inventing a genre of videogames is that, until it becomes completely played out, every game that emulates your formula is going to be attached to your name. Games that feature a wide-open, freely explorable world, for example, will have a hard time avoiding the label of "Grand Theft Auto clone," especially if their worlds are littered with vehicles to steal and drive. In the six years since Grand Theft Auto III, a slew of games have tried to become "the next GTA," but so

Monday 15 January 2007 The expletive-heavy Saints Row, Xbox 360's none-more-gangster GTA-alike action game, will soon be invading new territory with a launch on PlayStation 3, according to a listing by US web retailer, EB Games. The listing appeared in the PS3 section of EB Games' website last Friday, prompting immediate speculation that the game is indeed headed to Sony's console. The page has now been removed. 'Mistakes' like these have become common - perhaps EB is gauging customer response

Thursday 1 February 2007 Saint's Row, the gangster-heavy, GTA-style action game, will shoot onto PlayStation 3 this spring - as we had expected after US retailer EB Games posted a product listing for a PS3 version of the game recently - following the game's successful launch on Xbox 360 last year. The announcement was confirmed on THQ's official website, which also assures Sony-buying gamers that the PS3 edition will feature multiplayer modes for action over the PlayStation Network. We

Sept 24, 2007 Initial details have hit on Saints Row 2, Volition's gangster sequel that THQ confirmed in May was in the pipeline for Xbox 360 and PS3. Due in 2008, the action returns to Stilwater for the sequel - building crews have been dispatched to transform and expand the city - although events are taking place "years" after those portrayed in the first game. "The explosive conclusion to Saints Row has left the player wounded, betrayed and thirsty for revenge, and now it's time to take

Dec 18, 2007 New details have piled in on THQ sequel to Saints Row, which is heading to Xbox 360 and PS3 next year. According to the latest mag previews, Saints Row 2 is set to feature a city 45 percent larger than the Xbox 360 original, with new vehicles including motorbikes, jet-skis and speedboats. So far, so GTA. What's new though is the introduction of aircraft such as planes and helicopters, which excitingly you can smash right through buildings. You can't destroy buildings entirely,

We've seem some odd teaser trailers in our time, but the first for THQ's sequel Saints Row 2 really wins the weird - and rubbish - award we've just made up.

Devoid of gameplay and even cinematics, the teaser features dialogue and squiggly black lines against a purple-sun background that eventually forms itself into the Saints Row 2 logo.

Is it, perhaps, some belated April Fool? Join us in our bewilderment:

Despite huge death-rays of cynicism on the issue from most of the gaming press, developer Volition has said that it thinks Saints Row 2 will be competitive with GTA IV.Speaking at an event for the game last month, the THQ developer told press: "We wouldn't be releasing this year if we didn't think we could be competitive."The only thing I know about GTA is what I've read. From what I've read it seems like they're going in a more realistic

A new Saints Row 2 trailer couldn't possibly be any worse than the last one released, and this time around we're being treated to in-game action rather than squiggly lines and dialogue.

You can watch the trailer, which runs for two minutes, below. Can this really stand up against GTA IV?

On top of the trailer, THQ's released four new screenshots into the wild, which you can give a look-y

We've never actually thought about it before, but urban gangster games always feature males as lead characters. But the good news for all you girlfriends, mothers and little sisters out there who like to punch the odd virtual granny and do virtual drive-bys is that Saints Row 2 will let you take control of a bad-ass female. You won't look as scary, and you'll feel less like Dr Dre. But that's okay because at least the massively extended character

A recently-released trailer for THQ's Saint's Row 2 has been criticised as being "unusually pompous" for its digs at Grand Theft Auto IV.

Industry analyst Mike Hickey commented on the trailer, which makes fun of GTA's in-game social activities like bowling, watching TV and going to a cabaret club.

"The trailer directly attacks Grand Theft Auto IV in game content, an unusually pompous position in our view,
