Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune played his cards close to his chest when speaking at Capcom’s Mega Man Universe panel at this year’s Comic-Con. The series creator didn’t reveal much new information about the mysterious claymation trailer, which was released just prior to the convention. Speaking in very broad terms, Inafune pointed out one goal of Mega Man Universe, is to ‘allow you to play as the Mega Man of your dream.’ Later adding that another goal is to ‘unite Mega Man fans from around the planet, together in one place.’
Inafune did, however, hint that Mega Man Universe won’t be the only new Mega Man title announced this year. “Actually, I want to tell you there’s other things going on with Mega Man right now. This is going to be a big Mega Man year for me, personally. You haven’t heard the last of the Mega Man announcements in the near future,” said Inafune, adding that the unannounced title is “an oft requested thing” fans have been wanting. Early this morning Capcom announced the long-teased Mega Man Universe for Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. It came bundled with perhaps the coolest trailer of the year - a claymation salute to Capcom's greatest heroes, from Mega Man to Ryu to poor Arthur from the Ghosts 'n' Goblins series. The real question is... what the hell is this game even about? The trailer doesn't explain, but oh god is it fun to watch.
When it was first revealed in July, Mega Man Universe was said to "break the mold and challenge conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be." Imagine our surprise when the first three gameplay trailers, released today on IGN, Gamespot and 1up, revealed the same classic 2D gameplay we've enjoyed for decades.
If you'll excuse me, I'm now going to be a bit smug for the second time this week. Why? Because another of my exciting predictions for gaming's future has come true, in exactly the way I said it would.
Hot on the smouldering, radioactive heels of my long-held Duke-Nukem-by-Gearbox-at-PAX clairvoyance, Capcom has confirmed the gameplay details of its upcoming, previously mysterious, best-trailer-ever-having Mega Man Universe title. At this point I could just point you towards my previous predicto-feature and instruct you to upgrade all of my assumptions to weapons-grade fact, but I'm a serious professional and besides, that would be too smug even for me. I'm already feeling a bit self-concious about the big red Cape of Smugness I'm wearing (the one with the white feather trim) and the crown I've made out of that printer paper I stole the other day.
So I'm going to write a new story. And it will contain all the details. And maybe even a few screens.
