Ok, so it's a bit of a fanboy line - but Final Fantasy VII was the game credited with single handedly popularising RPGs outside of Japan. Tomorrow will be the game's tenth anniversary, and those fanboys are still trying to find a way to resurrect Aeris. But with its past success looming over the Japanese developer, will Square Enix be able to make FFXIII do for PS3 what FFVII achieved for PSOne?
FFVII was a massive step up for the series in almost every respect, weaving a

Today I have asked gameplay designer and software engineer, Gary Paterson, to speak in the diary. When hes not following Aberdeen, celebrating Scotlands World Cup Win (the homeless World Cup that is), finding the latest Leeds United negative story to rub in my face, or reliving every detail of Scotlands one win over England, Gary is busy tweaking the shooting and the details of our game engine. Seriously, Gary is going to give

It's time to cast an eye once again over Bethesda's RPG sequel Fallout 3 as new screenshots emerge from the post-nuclear wasteland.
The game proper, as most things do, begins with a birth: your birth, deep within the loving steel confines of Vault 101. It's at this point that your masked father runs a DNA test on you, letting you choose your basic character details such as race and sex, after which your father will magically remove his mask to show that he shares the same genetic

Here we have new(ish) screenshots from Far Cry 2, many of which are used to show off the new game engine Ubisoft has developed for the first-person shooter sequel. Obviously a gameplay movie would give us far clearer idea of the qualities of the technology, but just look at that burning tree. It's hot! Ahem.
Once you've passed mince pies over the screens, go read our Far Cry 2 interview with Louis-Pierre Pharand, Far Cry 2's producer and Clint Hocking, the game's creative

FIFA 08 is getting a 10-player online mode as a downloadable extra on Xbox 360 and PS3. Great news, certainly, but it's come as quite a surprise to us at GR. You see, EA's 'Be a Pro' and 'Be a Pro Co-op' modes are so new, even EA developers we spoke to recently reckoned that the mode would be 2 v 2 for the year's sports titles, before being taken to its logical conclusion of 11 v 11 at some point in the series' future. But it seems that the full-team ideal is closer than we

A playable demo of Sony Japan's gorgeous-looking Folklore will be appearing in the PS Store tomorrow.
The demo puts you in control of one of the two starring characters, Ellen, who goes to the mysterious town of Doolin in search of her mother, and will give you a good feel for the character interaction, new fighting system and intuitive use of the SixAxis for which it has been so highly commended.
You can read what we have to say about the game

It's no great secret that Bethesda was aiming to appeal to an adult audience with its post-apocalyptic RPG game Fallout, but it's treading carefully to avoid certain pitfalls when it comes to including adult material in Fallout 3 - it doesn't want the game to become puerile.
"There are some people who say that making an 18-rated game, and especially making a Fallout one, should be about sleeping with the hooker, then waking up with the venereal disease. A lot of that stuff

Since the debut of FIFA International Soccer in 1993 each new version of EA's officially licensed soccer series has always delivered something fresh to the playing field - from the introduction of club teams (FIFA Soccer '95) and real player names (FIFA Soccer '96), through to power bars for shots (FIFA Soccer 2002) and the ability to control a second player "off the ball" (FIFA Soccer 2004).
Keeping with tradition, the upcoming FIFA 08 packs in a host of changes that promise to
Interplay has posted an exponential rise in revenues on the sale of the Fallout IP to Bethesda. Now the firm says it's ready to secure funding for "Fallout Online."
Interplay CEO Herve Caen said in a statement, "I am pleased with the progress the company has made, particularly with our debt load, which has improved from $59 million in December 2001 to less than $3 million today.
"With that difficult period behind us, we are focused on securing funding for development of a Massively
With Fallout's rabid fanbase, it isn't a surprise that chief among the requests voiced to Bethesda about the upcoming Fallout 3 was: "do not screw it up." And it'll sound familiar to anyone who chanced upon the official forum site.
But fans shouldn't fret. From day one, as executive producer Todd Howard reveals, Bethesda has been working from the original Fallout design - using the Fallout Vision Statement, created when the first game was just a twinkle in an old mans
