Last year's NBA Live got a 77 on Metacritic. 2K Sports' NBA 2K9 received a total of 84 on Metacritic. It's been a consistent pattern for years. The NBA 2K franchise continually outscores EA Sports' competing NBA Live series. Later this fall, the two franchises with once again battle each other on the virtual court, but EA Sports President Peter Moore is expecting a much tighter basketball showdown this year.

SportsGamer writes: One of the big issues with NBA 2K9 is the online play, specifically the 5 on 5 mode. It's virtually impossible to play a full game with 10 people. Things have progressively improved since the release, but there are still many issues. Tristan Hodge, head web engineer over at 2K Sports, sent me a link to the work around found until a patch is released.
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of NBA 2K9 by 2K Sports seems to be hampered by a serious freezing issue, as message boards are alight with reports of serious freeze issues and framerate issues. 2K Sports has yet to respond to queries about this, but the sheer number of complaints makes this problem more than just isolated issues.
Online play for NBA 2K9 has been terrible and it has 2K fans of the series extremely upset with no sign things are on the way to being improved.
