Gamezine:

'Two of the best PlayStation 3 racing game developers are to eventually merge under one roof.

Developer Evolution Studios were purchased by Sony Entertainment in 2007, and have since released a successful sequel to their racing classic MotorStorm.

It's well known that the team shared not only their PlayStation 3 engine but also their knowledge with Sony Studio Liverpool in the creation of WipEout HD. The collaboration resulted in a stunning full-1080p, 60 frames-per-second futuristic racer.

When asked whether the studios would merge completely in the future, Denny replies;

"Yes, it was always the intention with them being in the same geographic location and working so closely together, it would be ideal if they could be housed at some point within the same site, but it's not happening overnight."'

"In Japan, they're already out. In Europe, they're on their way. But what of America's line of budget, re-released PS3 games? Well, they're also on their way. Here's a first look at the Greatest Hits Line's initial run of titles, lifted from a new K-Mart entertainment catalogue. Only three titles are pictured (the rest being PSP games), but those games are clearly MotorStorm, Resistance and Warhawk."

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at Sony's recent PlayStation Day Nigel Kershaw, MotorStorm Pacific Rift's game director, has revealed what it's like to develop for the PlayStation 3.

When asked if MotorStorm Pacific Rift is pushing the PS3 Kershaw said: "The first game pushed the PS3, this is pushing the PS3, our next game is going to push the PS3. It's not so much about pushing the hardware, it's about learning how to use the hardware in the best possible fashion."

He added: "We've realised we've just scratched the surface of what we could actually do with the machine. And I'm sure next time around we'll learn a lot more from MotorStorm Pacific Rift."

Darkzero writes: "Over on Play-Asia a game called MotorStorm Complete has appeared, and is currently been sold for US$ 49.90 (€31.55) by the site. The site comments the game will be released May 22, 2008 in Japan.

So, what exactly is MotorStorm Complete? Well, the site itself does not comment on what the disc contains, but judging by the name we'd guess that it could be the normal Motorstorm, but with all the DLC included on disc with it."

As our Andy noted back in November, it has been a fantastic year for games, In fact, it's arguably been the best year ever. However, all that bounty has left us in a dilemma. We originally planned a top ten list for the end of the year, but looking at the long list of titles we've been forced to expand that to twenty - and even then we've had to sacrifice a few of our darlings and lose a couple of still great franchise updates that we felt didn't quite do enough to justify inclusion: Sorry Unreal Tournament III and Sega Rally, apologies Guitar Hero III, Football Manager 2008 and Pro Evo.
MotorStorm 3.1 Update - Mirrored Tracks, and 2D Vehicle Select Added (News)

The latest update to MotorStorm is out today.

Now included is a vehicle selection of 2D/3D in the host options as well as mirrored tracks.

The vehicle selections lets you have either the traditional 3D select screen or a 2D grid of the vehicles to choose from, which seems to speed up the selection process somewhat.

The host can also choose mirrored tracks which reverses the entire geometry set of the tracks. Where you went left you will now go right. An interesting mix, and will take some getting used too not to forget which way you're actually going!

There's also yet more Motorstorm goodies to download - new skins for your cars - and some game and Blu-ray trailers up for the taking.

There seems to finally be an update on the EU Playstation Network, although a day later than usual. Don't get too excited there. As of time of writing the update includes:

Colin McRae: Dirt (Demo)
Jed Ashforth Interview (Video)
All the Kings Men (Blu-ray Trailer)

As you have noticed there isn't even a sign of the latest Heavenly Sword video's, so hopefully I've caught it in the middle of an update.

Something weird has happened. Felice Standifer, who's the producer for Motorstorm claims that the long awaited Motorstorm update 1.2 has been postponed due to a nasty bug. Now the weird thing is that if you fire up Motorstorm and head to the online section of the game, it says there's an update available, and you can even download the new Time Attack mode from the European Playstation Store only.

Right now the patch and new game mode are only available in Europe. The Time Attack mode is only 100KB large so it shouldn't take long to download. But be warned, if you download the new game mode from the Playstation store without updating the game itself, it's possible that you can't play anymore, both online and offline.

A logical explanation would be that they released the patch too early and found out about the bug that's causing the network problems afterwards. In that case it's probably only a matter of time before they pull the patch and the item from the Playstation Store. If you don't really care about the online mode you'd better hurry up before it's too late, since Standifer didn't mention a new date yet.

Do you like taking risks? Download the update and let us know what happens!(Presently available for Europe only)

The Senior Producer for Motorstorm has posted on the official PlayStation blog to explain why PS3 owners are still waiting for the 1.2 patch.

"... right before we were planning to go live with the 1.2 updates with Time Attack mode, a new issue was found on the patch that could result in people not being able to establish a network connection. So, unfortunately, for now we need to continue to run tests and monitor the fix to ensure that it does not occur when the patch goes live.

I play Motorstorm religiously and *love* the new Time Attack mode, and I think you will too. Of course, it's in the best interest for everyone that we resolve this before we release the update. Bear with us, we'll have it out as quickly as we can and ensure the bug doesn't cause any problems for future updates."
In single-player, MotorStorms AI is aggressive. It angrily knocks you about, nudges you into obstacles and sends you hurtling over the sides of cliffs. And youre only racing unthinking robots blindly following strings of code. When you play online youre racing against real people. And people are bastards. And these particular bastards will stop at nothing to batter you off the course and, if you have a headset, youll be treated to a slew of swears at every turn.

When it was released in March, MotorStorm cut a huge muddy path of racing carnage across the PlayStation 3. Set in the off-road tracks of a large desert festival in Monument Valley, players had access to seven vehicle types, ranging from big rigs to dirt bikes. With the only rules of the competition being that there are no rules, racers could bump and crash their way to the finish line. However, one of the largest complaints lodged against the game was the limited number of tracks that players could fly through as they tried to collect the event tickets during the game.
All of that is about to change, as Evolution Studios and Sony Computer Entertainment will be rolling out new downloadable content for MotorStorm in the next few months. The PlayStation Store will soon provide brand new game features, modes and vehicles for MotorStorm racers to take into Monument Valley. It will even unlock new festival passes, such as the Coyote Revenge VIP Pass that will give completely new tracks and races. Instead of simply telling you minor details about the upcoming content, we managed to get a video interview with Paul Hollywood from Evolution Studios, who breaks down some of the new items that you'll be able to download. Check it out below, and as soon as info on the upcoming content becomes available, we'll get it post

Sony UK have today revealed a few new dates for the latest offerings bound for the PS3 Store, with MotorStorm's freely downloadable 'Time Attack' mode set for release this Friday - June 15th. As well as ushering in a new way to play the game, the online update also delivers a number of tweaks and enhancements, bolstering stability and the interface to boot.

Then there's Calling All Cars!, which is due out on Friday June 22nd, and will cost 4.99 GBP or 7.99 Euro. David Jaffe's latest is something of a departure from the world of Greek Gods and war, instead charging the player with racing around the streets, rounding up the low-lifes en masse.

Super Stardust HD is the last new arrival confirmed by the Big S, arriving (again on a Friday) come June 29th. An Asteroids-esque puzzle-blaster thing is order of the day - and from the HD in the title you can derive that while the gameplay may be retrograde the visuals certainly won't be. More on all this soon.

Good news for the few thousand Japanese PS3 owners who purchased Motorstorm in late 2006. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has decided to release an online expansion pack for the game. Set for release on 6/20, the free update will add 12 player online play (domestic rivals only) along with a time attack mode. The download requires 542 megabytes of hard disk space.

If you picked up Motorstorm in your part of the world earlier this year, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Japan got Motorstorm first late last year, but the game shipped without any form of multiplayer play. There was some initial concern that Sony would not upgrade the title to international spec, but those concerns have thankfully been cleared.
You'll be able to record your best lap for each circuit, and we have global leaderboards and about the top 250 cars will be stored, so you can race against the best in the world. You'll be able to download up to eight ghost cars for a race." You won't have to pay, thankfully, for Time Attack, and it will appear on 25 May.

MotorStorm's New Track
Then on June 1, Sony will put Premium Content Pack One on the PSN, whose main feature will be a new track called Coyote Revenge. Smith said: "This is based on a reversed Coyote Rage, although there is so much that's new about it that you won't recognise it." Pack One will also include three new Tickets, including Coyote Weekend, which will yield an unlockable car (alas, what class it belongs in has not yet been revealed). Plus, there will be a new online mode called Eliminator, in which: "You'll have 20 seconds to catch and overtake the person in front of you". And the pack will include a new Big Rig and a new Rally Car. When we find out how much this Pack One will cost, we'll let you know; in the meantime, it's good to hear that MotorStorm continues to evolve online.
Sony has revealed an online update for the awesome muddy-racer, MotorStorm, that will add a new game mode to the menus and fix a number of glitches.

Here's the blurb: "In Time Attack gamers can set their best times on each track with any available vehicle classes, then race against 'ghost' laps in subsequent Time Attack races. Extra-fast times will see your ghost laps automatically uploaded to the global leader boards for others to compete with.

May 11, 2007 - The slick-looking off-road racer, MotorStorm, is quickly becoming the poster child for PlayStation 3 updates. For its next official patch, slated to release on June 7, the game will add a brand new Time Attack mode that allows users to race against their own ghost in an effort to best their most efficient times.

As an added bonus, the fastest ghosts will automatically be uploaded to the global leaderboards so that others can compete against them. Additionally, phantom opponents aren't limited to just one -- in total players can race against seven different specters in a single race; these ghosts include ones made by the user, the previously-mentioned "best time" ghosts, or special developer-made "Evolution Ghosts" made up of a range of different skill levels.

Denny names social networking as key at London DevStation conference
The latest figures from Sony's PlayStation Network underpinned the bullish attitude at its three-day DevStation developer conference, held in London.

Millions of pieces of content have been downloaded, while Michael Denny, VP of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Europe, also said the number of network registrations since launch was very encouraging.

Next up will be download packs for MotorStorm, which will be available in premium (adding 'significant gameplay' to the title), and lite flavours.
MotorStorm developer Evolution is readying a huge update for its offroad racer that will iron out all the bugs and add improved functionality to the online mode.

The update, which will be made available for free in May, will change a long list of features, most crucially fixing a glitch that "allowed a player to use boost in an exploitative manner."

The update will also iron out other errors including making it easier to find and join games quickly, improved online stability and a text bug ...

Here is what the new Motorstorm Update 1.2 will include, read the article for a break down.

------------------------------------------

Apologies for the delay in getting these to you but its time to share the Update notes with everyone to show the new features and fixes coming your way in the next couple of weeks.

As you'll see as you read through, a full reset of all Ranks will also happen when the update becomes available. With the ranks being a little messed up with the Boost exploiters and the rank bug we think it's the best solution.

The update will be free and should arrive by the middle of May and it will be required to play online. Once it's ready the update will be installed when you next select the Online option.

Any questions then please ask away as I'm passing a summary of feedback from the community back to the developer team.
Nigel Kershaw, lead designer on MotorStorm, has said that the reason the Japanese version of the game doesn't have online play was simply because the Japanese market wasn't "as bothered about online."

The US and European version of Sony's mud-curdling racer shipped with full online play, while the first game out for the doors, the Japanese version, went solo. Many thought the online mode may have been dumped in order to get the game out of the door in time for the Japanese launch.

Not so ...
Another analyst speaks: It's Xbox 360 for the US! [X360] (News)

That's right, folks. Yet another US-based business analyst has chucked his hat into the ring, this time predicting that the Xbox 360 will be the next-gen consoles market leader. Sigh. You know, what we'd really like to do is get all these guys together in a room, lock the door, shout 'FIGHT' through the letterbox and retire to a safe distance...

The controversial soothsayer in this instance is one Bill Kreher of A.G. Edwards financial consultants. In a recent interview with Next Generation Bill has even taken the brave/foolish step to quantify Microsoft's dominance of the American market, stating that the Xbox 360's "first mover advantage" will see the console attain a 38% share by 2009. Well, if the Xbox 360 really does have, as Bill reckons, a five million headstart over the PS3 in the USA he's probably not a mile off! In the meantime the Wii will have a 34% slice of the pie, leaving just 28% for the PS3.

Gamerzines, the site behind the free magazines for Xbox 360, PC games, PSP and DS, has launched its free PlayStation 3 magazine to co-incide with the UK launch of the console. As with other Gamerzines, the magazine is written by professional games journalists and offered for free in a digital format. All that is required is Adobe Reader 8 on a PC. The magazine is enhanced with videos and multimedia that play on the pages themselves.

Issue 1 is available for download immediately and covers every single European launch game, as well as lengthy preview feature highlighting their pick of the top 20 games still to come on the PS3 this year.

The magazine is to publish a new issue for free every month from launch, to match the other existing Gamerzines for other platforms.

Any PS3 owner playing MotorStorm online will receive Time Trial Mode automatically ¿ you won't even need to download this one from the PLAYSTATION Store. Take any vehicle out on the track of your choice and go hell for leather to lay down the quickest lap time. You can race against ghost vehicles of your previous efforts, other players' times and the best attempts from the MotorStorm development team ¿ and then upload your best times to the global online rankings. In addition, more tracks, vehicles and game modes will be available later in the month, and thereafter on a regular basis.

Every new console that arrives is always welcomed with midnight launches and news coverage but from Oxford street.

Today i recieve a phonecall from the local GAME store where i pre ordered my PS3 (perry barr) birmingham and recieve a major shock.

The manager tells me the bundles and prices then tells me that the store and one stop have teamed up to midnight launch the PS3 with a BANG!

For pre ordered customers only, they would be invited in the store at 11pm to view all the prices, bundles, deals, acessories and view trailers for PS3 games before midnight. The staff will be on the floor chatting PS3 to everyone and once it hits midnight the consoles are sellable.

He said 'as gamers we've never really experienced the buzz of a midnight launch so what better way to experience it than with the PS3'

Motorstorm was the game that was going to be on the screens and blaring out of the speakers along with competitions for goodies.

He sounded extremelly enthusiastic over the phone and the buzz around the store was eletric when i walked in later that day.

What is your local store doing for launch?

"Proceeding the Phil Harrison Keynote last week, PSU ran into a few guys from Evolution Studios, whom all were wearing Motorstorm attire. After a little chit-chat about the keynote speech and thoughts on Sony's recent announcements, we began to ask questions about Motorstorm and what Evolution Studios had next on their list.

"Motorstorm 2!" was the reply and its been in development for quite some time. Outside of announcing the title, the developers wouldn't divulge into any other details, other than its being built on a revamped version of the original Motorstorm Engine."

When MotorStorm was first unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2005, it demonstrated a new level of detail for racing environments and gave us some idea of what we could look forward to on next-generation hardware. The dirt tracks that populate the game take their cue from the famous Monument Valley in Utah, North America. With a mix of dirt surfaces, sweeping canyons, and rock formations, the immense area should be a familiar sight to people who have seen such films as Back to the Future III and Thelma & Louise. While it was also featured in Namco's first Tekken game, this area hasn't been used so extensively as a backdrop for a game, let alone modelled in as much detail, as it is in MotorStorm.
Motorstorm Downloadable Content - New Track, Eliminator and Time Trial (News)

Gamespot.com were shown some Downloadable Content for Motorstorm. Article includes exclusive video footage of the new modes.

"It's fair to say that after it was unveiled at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2005, MotorStorm was one of the most anticipated titles for Sony's PlayStation 3. The end result didn't quite live up to our high expectations, but some of the criticisms leveled at the game appear to be addressed by a series of downloads that are due for release in the coming months. With new multiplayer modes and new tracks already nearing completion, we made the journey to Evolution Studios' headquarters in the north of England to become the first in world to see some of this new content in action.

Many of the negative points made about MotorStorm revolved around the game's multiplayer mode, which lacked variety beyond the single-race mode. While that in itself was fun enough, and the game was more than capable of allowing 12 players from across the world to hit the dirt, it lacked the depth of the majority of its contemporaries. While split-screen multiplayer remains off the cards because of technical issues, Evolution plans to appease the online community with a number of new modes, two of which we saw on our visit. The eliminator mode should be familiar to players of such games as Burnout Revenge, where the car in last position is forced to retire at periodic intervals. The tried-and-tested time trial mode will also be making an appearance."

Evolution's ballsy off-roader leads the PS3 launch-day race, but has it been worth the wait?

There are so many crashes in MotorStorm it wouldn't surprise us if the Department for Transport started using clips of spectacular smashes for its next road safety campaign. 'Driving too fast off cliffs can KILL', the ad might say. 'Smashing into a 50-ton boulder at 30mph will leave a nasty scrape on your paintwork; at 100mph you'll DIE' could be another slogan. Only you won't cark it. Sure, you'll likely lose a few precious seconds and the battle for first place will become more of an uphill struggle, but moments after your dune buggy explodes in a shower of body panels and flaming engine parts you're back in the hot-seat and the race is on once more.
What could possibly be enjoyable about a racing game which sees you gloriously thrash the field for 97 per cent of a race, only to be shoved straight into a tire barrier six agonizing yards from the finishing line? And not even by a malicious human competitor, but through the seemingly entirely random behavior of a computer-controlled one? Life is spectacularly unfair at times.

Well, if it was just about any other game, the answer would be “to hell with it.” But this isnt just any ...
