GDC boss Jamil Moledina has told GamesIndustry.biz that many studios are holding back on starting PlayStation 3 projects due to the challenges of developing for Sony's new console.
A day before the console is available in North America, PS3's online functions are ready for registration; demos for Resistance, Motorstorm downloadable.
Sony's PlayStation 3 is set to arrive this week on November 17th. With just 400,000 units available at launch in the USA, and an unknown number of game consoles arriving the rest of year. The total is expected to be below 1 million units in 2006, as a result many publishers have decided to delay their games so more time can be spent polishing them.
A pamphlet included in the US retail PlayStation 3 hardware bundle has shed some light on the release dates for a few of the next-gen system's upcoming exclusives.
Destructoid's Robert Summa, surely en route to scope out Tickle Me Extreme Elmo's to shill on eBay this holiday season, got some footage and photo snaps of the freshly installed PlayStation 3 kiosk at the flagship Toys "R" Us in Times Square. The video shows that the kiosks are equipped with (at the very least) a Motorstorm demo, but not all are currently operational.
From PSM3: "Ridge Racer is a pleasant surprise. It's slick and slippery like a greased-up seal and the bright, chunky arcade visuals look stunning in HD. When it first arrived we almost flipped a lid ¿ the menu was full of options! Woo! But, typically, you can only select one game mode (arcade) and one track (a jungle thing with lovely misty waterfalls). But what a track it is, with a shockingly-beautiful section going through a damp cave. The reflections are so good, you can almost see your own face in the puddles.
Despite being one of the best-looking titles for the PlayStation 3 at launch (unless you're Ridge Racer 7 fetishist Tom, it's between this and MotorStorm really), Insomniac Games' Resistance: Fall of Man will not be integrated with the console's online functionality, specifically the built-in buddy list - instead, it will use its own buddy list, clan management system, and so on.
CVG have come up with 31 different ways that the PS3 can rule the gaming universe. Can you think of any more?
To go along with the MotorStorm demo that will be available to the Sony PS3 at launch, it now looks like like Resistance will have its own demo as well. According to Kotaku and their hands-on preview of the game at Sony's recent press event, there will be a three-level demo of the game available from day one via the Playstation online network. For more of Kataku's hands-on preview of the demo they played, hit the link below.
Today, Sony held a press event to show off a number of the launch window titles for its upcoming next-generation powerhouse, the PlayStation 3. On display for hands-on time was just about every launch game and a number of near-launch titles, including Evolution Studios' MotorStorm.
A list printed today from Gamestop that lists all the games they have in their database and their release dates.
Sony has announced the retail price of two of its Japanese PS3 launch titles, Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man and Sony's own Genji: Days of the Blade.
From psm3mag.com: "We played MotorStorm and Resistance. While this isn't the time to start writing a review of both games we will say that both were VERY impressive. Pretty much the whole building crammed into the games room here to see and play - and that's a lot of people from a lot of 'rival' games mags. Yes, the Xbox mag guys did take the piss and think it looked rubbish. But what else are they going to do? Fact is it's too early to successfully draw any 'better than 360' conclusions here. However Resistance looked like a great 360 game while MotorStorm had a certain 'PS3 magic' about it. We're talking texture detail, draw distance and realistic lighting rather than 'gameplay' or 'course design' here. We'll leave the proper review until we've played the finished game for longer than a couple of hours, thanks. That said, within thirty seconds you can 'see the PlayStation 3 difference' in this game.
Set in the fictional desert environment of Monument Valley, with scenic views of harrowing cliff edges, wide-open plains and tight canyon sections, vehicles such as ATVs and bikes take center stage in combat-like racing. The goal is not only to win, but also to reach the end line alive as these vehicles are weapons of destruction.
German game site www.gameguide.nl posted today the ultimate list of 160 game tittles in production for the ps3.
When the Xbox 360 launched last Christmas, it was widely remarked upon that many of the console's early portfolio of titles were developed in the UK - with games from Bizarre Creations and Rare forming the backbone of the launch line-up for the system. With the PlayStation 3, once again, British developers are punching above their weight - and of the key first-party titles given top billing on Sony's stand at TGS, no less than three hail from the sceptered isle. Two are racing games - the genuinely head-turning MotorStorm and the nice-if-you-like-that-sort-of-thing F1 - while the third is developer Ninja Theory's graphically stunning slash-'em-up, Heavenly Sword.
This is good news for PS3, according to reports Motorstorm looks like "one of the most visually stunning games ever seen on a home console". 1080p or not that's still a great compliment to the PS3....but Phil had some interesting comments to add. I don't claim to know exactly what he meant but it definitely makes you wonder.
