NowGamer: Warner Bros. Interactive is set to complete the acquisition of troubled Midway Games, but is it the last hurrah of an outmoded publisher?

Warner Bros. was the sole bidder for the majority of Midway's assets, including its Chicago and Seattle studios and the ubiquitous Mortal Kombat franchise. The $33 million sale has since been approved by a court hearing, while Midway's Newcastle and San Diego studios, which were not included in the deal along with a number of ageing sports titles, are set to close in the next 60 days if a buyer doesn't come forward.

The question is will gamers really care? The company was huge in the eighties, producing endless fun via its arcade division – but with the death of coin-ops, Midway has become something of a dinosaur, still relying on it's biggest franchise, Mortal Kombat.

"Following yesterday's report on Mortal Kombat II disappearing from the PlayStation Store, we got in touch with a Sony representative to find out exactly why the incredibly popular PSN title is suddenly nowhere to be found. Their response is still a little vague, but it sounds a lot like what many people already theorized:

"A Mortal Kombat II specification is being upgraded in connection with the release of the latest firmware update. This is one of our top titles on PlayStation Network, we are working diligently to get this back up on the PlayStation Store.""
And it was Lee who brought his proprietary blend of Kung Fu kickass-ery to the mainstream with his wild whoops, and a roundhouse kick that packed more power than the millions of stale internet jokes about his co-star. So why all the Lee love on a videogame site? ...

The relationship between games and movies has always been a tense one. There's something almost violently alchemical about the way the two media usually react to each other. It's like getting hit by a yellow, piss-soaked snowball. Either element can be unpleasant enough on its own, but put them both together and something far more horrible happens.

Games of movies, movies of games, they're both usually about as much fun as the death of a clown at a ten year-old's birthday party. But still we ...
